  1. That's a lot of time and money scouting one kid. It just shows what front offices due to find their BPA when they draft. Talking about HS arms....I can definitely see this year turning out like last year. Several of the top college guys go before the Twins pick and us ending up with the best HS pitcher again. Currently it is another Texas boy by the name of Kolek. Big kid (6'4 230 lbs) who is already hitting 99 on the gun.
  2. Looking back at the top 10 players selected in the past 5 years, 27 pitchers were taken to 23 position players. BPA is not exclusive to position players. All teams spend a ton of money and time researching who they should take, especially with high picks.
  3. Sorry, I meant to say when Ryu was posted that was the scouting report. #3 with potential to be #2.
  4. Keith Law- Meyer hit 100 once, bunch of 99s, walked Addison Russell then punched out the next three guys. Kiley McDaniel- Twins prospect Alex Meyer sat 98-100 with plus life in the first inning of the AFL. Also showed nasty slider & surprisingly good change.
  5. Tanaka is closer to the Dodgers Ryu Hyun Jin than Darvish. While Tanaka and Darvish are Japanese, Ryu Korean, both Tanaka/Ryu are #3 starters with #2 upside stuff wise. Ryu was signed last year for $36M for 6 years and had a $25.7M posting fee. I find it hard to believe Tanaka will get over double Ryu.
  6. Keith Law- Alex Meyer sitting 98 in the first inning with sink
  7. BA had Kris Bryant as their 6th ranked college player in the fall so he didn't rise that much. As I say this I'm guessing no one would have guessed he would have the highest signing bonus. Gray on the other hand was way more of a surprise, not because of talent, but because he finally found control. I think all of us want a college guy but you have to go with what the draft gives you. Hopefully Beede finds his control finally because I'm a big fan of his stuff.
  8. Thanks again Bob. These are my favorite reads.
  9. I think Buxton proved two years ago that you should always go BPA. If two players are equal go need. Like most, i prefer grabbing a quick to the bigs college front of the rotation pitcher but you can't force a pick. Especially a top 5 pick where you have a chance to draft a star player.
  10. Jim Callis, before he left BA, did a Ask BA article about early potential draft picks and examined their record in pegging the top talent the past 3 years. Here is what he got: "Of the last 30 players to rate among our top five college or high school overall prospects in the fall before their draft, half of them became top-10 picks. That includes two of the three No. 1 overall selections (Appel in 2013, Cole), with 2012′s first choice (Carlos Correa) ranking No. 11 on our High School Top 100 the previous fall. Manaea, Giolito and Purke almost certainly would have gone in the top 10 if healthy, and Giolito was one of six of the players mentioned above taken in the 11-20 range." Half ended in the top 10, 14 others were first rounders, 2 in the supplement round (well over slot), 3 in the second round (2 well over slot), and 1 in the third round (well over slot). While it is impossible to know exactly who the Twins will draft it is never to early to educate ourselves on the top players. A majority of the top players now will be top players come draft day. Also, some of us just enjoy talking about the draft. Here is a link to Callis' article: http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/ask-ba-2014-draft-top-prospects/
  11. I mentioned Nathan, Mauer, and Morny just as examples of the Twins resigning their big time impending FAs since moving into Target field.
  12. The excuse might not work on FA signings but I see no reason why it wouldn't work on impending FAs. Ryan hasn't had anyone really worthy of throwing big money too since coming back. While the argument can be made for Cuddyer no one was making that argument last year and who knows if we will after next season. Smith was the one who didn't sign Torii and traded Santana. The organization reportedly offered Torii a 3 year $45 million contract which was blow away by the Angels and offered Santana 4 year $80 million extension before trading him (Santana gave the Mets ~600 great innings and 117 bad innings for $132 million). Twins did sign Nathan, Mauer, and Morny to big deals with that Target Field money. Back to the main topic. When you have lost 95+ games three seasons in a row you have to explore every possibility. Sano+ for Price is an interesting scenario depending on if Price would sign an extension with us.
  13. Rangers said months ago they aren't interested in Tanaka so take them off the list of potential buyers. After throwing 50+ million put of pocket for Darvish they might not have another $40+M to do so again on Tanaka.
  14. Morny had almost no value so getting anything which might be on the team next year is valuable. If Presley can hold down the 4th OF spot and Welker is an average RPer we will have easily won this trade. The most valuable part of this trade for me is to see Morny in the playoff hunt. I have never been a pirates but I am this year. Hope he gets a shot at a ring.
  15. While I prefer to hold onto our prospects, due to the fact we have holes everywhere, you have to explore every possibility to get better. I dislike this FA agency class quite a bit so trading prospects might be our only chance to get a true impact pitcher.
  16. This seems completely unnecessary.... If I agree with certain things Terry Ryan does I'm an "apologists" but if I disagree with things Terry Ryan does I'm a "hater"? What if i agree with certain things he does and certain things he doesn't? Does that make me a apologist hater? Wait that doesn't sound right. Am I a hater apologist? That doesn't sound right either... Bah! I'm confused!
  17. I thought I read on twitter that they plan to look outside the organization. Maybe I'm just dreaming. Hopefully they bring in a Latin American coach from outside the system who can relate better with Sano and Rosario.
  18. Kiley McDaniels had Newcomb as a big time sleeper. Had scouts compare him to Lester. While a college arm would be great unless Beede finds his command I'm not sure there will be a great option there if your looking college arm.
  19. I might be crazy but I'm still pretty confident in May. Will he be a future 1/2? No. But I could see him being an innings eater who can strike out a lot of guys. That's pretty valuable. People who followed his year know he pitched pretty well but still had problems with "that one bad inning" which was due to BB or HR.
  20. While it is way too early to mock most of the names we know now will be the same names come draft time. At least when talking about potential top 5 guys. If we had say the 25th pick, we wouldn't be complaining about bring back Gardy, and would be talking about this prematurely.
  21. A lot of people were fine with the #4 pick last year till experts started to say there was a value cut off after the first 3 picks (Appel, Gray, and Bryant). Also, look how much money the Rookies signed Gray under slot for. They were able to use that money a lot of other places. Even if rumors were true that the Twins had Stewart higher than most they might have had extra money to go after local boy Logan. In the end they will get a top talent no matter what.
  22. Looking at Jim Callis' early top 10 players last year compared to this years I can definitely say I'm a lot more excited for this group. I don't see us running into the debate about possibly drafting a HS toolsy outfielder!
  23. John Sickels over at minorleagueball released his top 75 prospects today. Here are the Twins who made it. 1) Buxton 3) Sano 33) Stewart 53) Meyer 65) Rosario Honorable mention- Pinto The 5 who made it isnt really surprising. Some might argue Stewart is too high while Meyer is too low but either way they both look like studs. The Lastros and Cubbies each had 6 prospect make the list while the Twins and Red Sux had 5. 24. Gatewood is one heck of a talent and you might be right that he could battle Rodon for the #1 spot. Personally I'm a huge Turner fan. Keith Law has been down on him as of late but I love the idea of a Turner and Buxton hitting 1/2 in our lineup. Both have 80 speed and will play premium defense at premium positions.
  25. Jim Callis' early take on the 2014 draft: "The 2014 Draft is a solid group that impresses scouts more than the 2012 and 2013 talent pools. College pitching is always a prized commodity, and there's plenty behind Rodon, starting with right-handers Jeff Hoffman (East Carolina) and Tyler Beede (Vanderbilt). There's more velocity this year in the high school ranks, with righty Tyler Kolek (Shepherd, Texas, HS) leading the way with a consistent upper-90s fastball. The pitchers stand out more than the position players, though there are plenty of intriguing bats. Catcher/outfielder Alex Jackson (Rancho Bernardo HS, San Diego) and shortstop Jacob Gatewood (Clovis, Calif., HS) offer plenty of power, while Trea Turner (North Carolina State) has uncommon speed and is a rare collegian who should be able to play shortstop in the Majors" Pipeline Inbox: Surveying 2014 Draft field | MLB.com: News
