  1. While Franco had a fine year he just doesn't match the rest of the names. Outside of SS I figured most of these were easy picks. One thing of note is how Mayo mentioned how close the 2B group was, specifically our own Rosario.
  2. MLB.com's Jim Callis (formerly of BaseballAmerica) and Jonathan Mayo each released their All-Prospect Team lists today. Unlike BA where the player still has to be under the rookie cut off, MLB.com's lists could consist of any player that entered the year as a prospect. The lists consist of the 8 positions (no DH) and 2 pitchers ( a lefty and eighty). They also give their position player of the year, pitcher of the year, biggest riser and faller, and prospect with the most to prove. Callis and Mayo agreed on 7 of the 10 positions, with Mayo making a surprise pick for 3B which won't make Twins fans happy. They do end up both agreeing with BaseballAmerica that Buxton was the best position player of the year even though under their rules they could have selected possible RotY candidate Puig. Who made the list, who didn't, and what did they have to say about them? Here are the links to both articles: Callis: Jim Callis' 2013 All-Prospect team | MLB.com: News Mayo: Jonathan Mayo's 2013 All-Prospect team | MLB.com: News
  3. Trade Doumit and let Pinto/Mauer rotate between C and DH with Herm coming in on off days. Players get injured no matter where they are.
  4. Outside of Cano and the international guys I don't see a player worth going over 4 years for so there is that. There is a lot of junk, some more expensive than others, so Ryan has plenty to pick from. Nick Nelson pointed out why the Twins will spend this off season days before this came out and he made some pretty good points. Twins are going to spend. The question is how much?
  5. Rumors had it that a lot of teams inquired about Nolasco and Stanton last off season but were turned away. Some experts pointed to the fact the Marlins couldn't take another PR hit after trading half their team. Obviously a few months later they traded him so I'm not sure how valid the reports were. He defiantly would have been a solid get though if they were looking to trade him.
  6. Actually I'm coming up with my numbers looking at Darvish/Dice-K (100M+) as the high end while taking into account Ryu (62M) as the low end. Ryu didn't go for some insane number last year even though teams had a stupid amount of money. While Tanaka is a better prospect than Ryu I don't I don't see him being 40+M better than him. In the end we are just arguing over semantics because your bid number is about what I would expect a team to offer. 40ish give or take.
  7. The FA starting pitching market is horrid. Next year isn't much better. If you want talent you are going to have to give up talent. Does that mean trading Rosario or Dozier? Maybe. Maybe not. The point is we have to at least explore the option. I believe a package built around Rosario could bring a solid arm in. Who? That's a little more difficult to know. Outside of the few names that were floated around the trade deadline, Price and Lee, we won't really know till the season ends.
  8. Great post. I like the idea of rewarding people from within the franchise but at some point you have to go outside of the organization. I like Gardy and thank him for all he has done for the franchise but I think we need a new leader.
  9. After how quick a lot of people soured on Hicks after struggling after being rushed to the bigs I hope they don't make the same mistake with Sano.
  10. Mlbtraderumors profiles FA starting pitcher to be Ricky Nolasco. Here is the writer had to say about what possibly could be his next contract: "An agent recently told me he focuses much more on years than average annual value, because teams and agents generally know the likely AAV range before they even begin negotiating. Nolasco should have no problem finding three years; the big question is whether the Dodgers or another team will offer four. Sosnick will probably begin there, explaining why his client is on par with Edwin Jackson and Mark Buehrle, and one of the best in a weak market. Jackson, Buehrle, and Nolasco are all durable 200 inning types, but Jackson hit the market at 29 and brought the allure of a 93-94 mile per hour fastball. Buehrle was two years older than Nolasco, but also had better career numbers. Plus, Buehrle's four-year, $58MM contract was something of a fluke -- the Marlins were reportedly the only team offering the fourth year, as they were in the midst of a new ballpark spending spree. Then again, it only takes one team to guarantee that fourth year, making the Jackson contract Nolasco's likely ceiling. An innings guy these days will probably require an AAV in the $10-13MM range. Ultimately I believe Nolasco will sign a three-year, $36MM deal." Full article here: Free Agent Profile: Ricky Nolasco: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
  11. Ron Washington used to play for the Twins so even though it is very small there is some connection. Kind of.... Ok, not really, but I love Maddux. Perfect fit.
  12. I like the way you think!
  13. I don't know if Ryan would trade say....Sano, Buxton, or Meyer for a top arm but how about a reclamation project like Ervin Santana last year? Its not like we dont have to money to take on. People seem to forget that Santana was given away for free last year because of how poor he had pitched. Now he is magically a proven arm. How about calling up the Rays about Hellboy? He would cost maybe a B spec which we are loaded with. Once again, I'm all for spending on pitching but because of how weak to FA market is I hope the Twins explore trades first.
  14. I just don't see it. I think the highest bid will be in the $35-40 range with a 6 year contract that will be close to the bid number. Darvish was hyped for 2 years before being posted while, reportedly, only two teams have sent top brass to see him. I guess only time will tell who is right.
  15. I'm all for spending big, currently consider myself the leader of the sign Tanaka bandwagon, but who are these proven arms? Even the top arms in this FA class have major question marks and in normal years wouldn't even be top 5 guys. If the Twins can't sign Tanaka I much rather trade for an arm. Find this years Santana.
  16. A year or two ago BA started to put risk rating on their prospects. The prospect gets a ceiling rating (20-80 on the scouting scale) and a chance to reach that ceiling rating (low/medium/high). Today in the chat Buxton got a 75 medium (no prospect has gotten 80). The fact he got 75 is special on its own but getting a medium for a 19 year old in A ball is nuts. While I agree no prospect should be compared to Trout after what he did last year it is impossible not to get excited about this kid.
  17. Where are you guys getting this 100+ M number from? I haven't read anything that suggests that. History defiantly doesn't. Did I miss something? (Sure wouldn't be the first time I did)
  18. Mike Maddux. This franchise needs someone, anyone, from outside the organization to come in. As someone who used to live in Dallas and follows the Rangers as a side team the things Maddux has done for the pitching there is amazing. Built a whole new philosophy. With our young arms coming up we need someone who has proven to be able to harness their talent. As I say this I'm guessing if Gardy isn't back, which I would bet he will be, the front office most likely will bring someone from within the organization.
  19. Reports have the Cubs coming in second and the Blue Jays coming in third with bids less than $35 M of the $52 M the rangers offered. I think the elevated number comes from the Dodgers putting up a $27.5 M posting fee for Ryu before signing him to a six year deal. Tanaka is considered a better pitcher than Ryu who the Dodgers ended up spending a total of $62M on.
  20. Here is the transcript from BA's chat. Lots of great stuff on Buxton and Sano. Well worth reading through. BaseballAmerica.com: Chat Prospects
  21. The one team the "scares me" are the cubs. They are pretty much in the same spot as us but have more ready now guys IMO. Add in Theo signed Dice-K while in Boston and the front office's willingness to spend money. I haven't heard their top brass linked to him yet but if I had to guess today I would bet they win him. Hopefully Ryan proves me wrong!
  22. There has only been two players to be named baseballamerica's high school player of the year and milb player of the year. Buxton and some catcher named Mauer.
  23. No sources that i have seen have suggested Tanaka will get anything close to 100M. Darvish and Dice-K were looked at as #2's with ace upside while Tanaka is looked at as a #3 with #2 upside. Some experts have suggested once all is said and done he will be in the70-80 million range. About half of that will go to the posting fee so in reality you would only be on the hook for ~7-8 million a year. Even if doesn't turn out to be a #2 you aren't crippled financially. Reports have Rangers out of the running, Dodgers more concerned trying to lock up Kershaw, and the Yankees worried about luxury tax/resigning Cano. Does this mean they won't jump back in later? No, but several of the big players have other things on their plates. Also, the only two teams that I have seen reported with top brass out there so far are the Twins and Giants.
  24. Fate would have to first catch up to Buxton, which might be impossible.
  25. From Ben Badler- "best minor leaguer I've ever seen" and "the comparisons of Byron Buxton to Trout at the same age are legitimate." Also, from JJ Cooper- "we always take age, league context, and prospect status into consideration. If not, Chris Colabello has this year's best case."
