  1. His comments on Stewart are odd seeing his coworker Christopher Crawford and BA said Stewart could be the first HS player to make the bigs. While his delivery is crude his stuff is already well above average. Law also had Stewart in his mid season top 50 which is also odd.
  2. Twins questions and answers from his chat today: Buxton/Meyer or Appel/Correa - which duo would you prefer? Klaw (1:25 PM) Appel/Correa of those choices. Re: Rosario - it is unfortunate that MLB's silly and inconsistent recreation drug testing policy will cost him a large portion of this season. Klaw (1:27 PM) I agree with you on the principle, but Rosario's makeup isn't the greatest, and I wonder if this might be a wakeup call for the kid to clean up his act. He has way too much ability to let something like that get in between him and the big leagues. What do you see as Hunter Harvey's advantages over Kohl Stewart, who some saw as the number 1 guy in the draft? Klaw (1:34 PM) Harvey came on very strong over the summer after signing, and the Orioles managed to get big results from small tweaks to his delivery. I still love Stewart's upside, but the Twins have more cleanup work to do with him than the O's did with Harvey. Out of your list, who would you say would be most likely to become an MVP candidate Klaw (1:36 PM) Buxton.
  3. Callis, whom had Buxton/Meyer as the #2 pitcher/hitter combo, went further to name his top 13 hitter/pitcher combos. Not only do we have Buxton/Meyer at #2 but he says he would have Sano/Stewart at 6. Not only do we have elite prospects but we have depth also.
  4. I believe Sano mentioned wanting to get down to 240 by spring training.
  5. Definitely was surprised by not having Rosario on the list.
  6. Callis was asked via Twitter to rank the past #1 prospects of the last 4 years and he ranked them Buxton, Trout, Moore, Profar. That DOES NOT mean he thinks Buxton will be a better player than Trout. Trout is the best 20-22 year old MLB player ever. Just a better prospect when looking back. Pretty nice compliment.
  7. Normally the top 10-15 picks in any draft make the top 100 lists the following year due to talent alone. Stewart is a beast. His overall skill set is truly insane for a HS kid.
  8. The show will only be going over the top 50 but the top 100 list will be released after the show. I'm hoping to see 4 twins in the top 50.
  9. Tonight at 9 central the MLB Network will be unveiling MLB.com's top 50 prospects for 2014. I know Mayo hosted it last year, since then they added Jim Callis, so I'm not sure if just one or both will be on. Jim Callis mentioned on twitter that prospects will be live tweeting during the show. Buxton will be one but who knows where everyone else will fall!
  10. Mr.Crawford does a great job. This is his first year to break down teams best prospects. Normally he focuses more on the draft.
  11. Christopher Crawford, one of the two writers who helps Keith Law around draft season, released his top 14 Twins prospect list last night. He does great work. The list is very interesting with a surprise pick at #3. Also, some of his grades seem a bit conservative but it is worth the read. Here is his intro to the list: "Well, when your system starts out with arguably the two best offensive prospects in baseball, you’re off to a pretty good start. The Twins have drafted extremely well the past few years, and have used their limited big-league assets to help build the quantity of the system, as well. As good as Buxton and Sano are, Minnesota’s pitching is the highlight of the system, with a trio of hard throwing right-handers that project to be No. 2 starters or better. There are several names here that would be top ten — maybe even top five — prospects in other systems that didn’t make this list, which speaks to the depth they’ve accumulated over the past few years. If this isn’t the best system in baseball, I’m not sure what is." Here is the link to his article: http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2014/01/top-14-in-14-minnesota-twins/
  12. I have been paying attention, a lot of us have, but the question is have you been paying attention to the other 29 team's prospects? While there are some teams with some horrid systems, most have at least a handful. I just doubt we will see any other top 100s with 8 Twins on it.
  13. While I agree with you that this is the most likely top 8, one thing to note, this isn't only Pask's list. Multiple staff members at BP, just like with Baseball America, put together the final list. If it was my choice that would be my top 8 but I still don't believe all 8 are top 101 prospects. Nice to see some Twins love though.
  14. While Baseball Prospectus top 101 prospect list hasn't been released yet, should be today or tomorrow, Jason Parks tweeted the following: Looks like the #Twins will place eight prospects on the BP 101; #Cubs, #Royals, #Pirates, and #Rangers with seven;#Red Sox with six. I'm a massive Twins prospect follower but eight in the top101 seems a bit much even for me. Who makes? Who doesn't?
  15. Also, you know, Stewart was committed to play QB at A&M. Even if he hated Manziel he couldn't say anything. I'm not worried at all about his attitude issues. He is still a kid. Not every player will be humble and having a little cockiness isn't a bad thing. Especially from a pitcher who could be the ace of your team. All that matters is he has stuff that scouts salivate over. While Meyer is closer Stewart's stuff is arguably already better.
  16. I 100% agree with you Seth. Just like Hicks, I feel people are overreacting to a player switching levels and having a bad small sample size. They could bust, prospects often do, but I'm not worried yet. Not at all.
  17. No matter what studies, old or new, say in the end it won't matter. Twins have shown the last two years they are taking the top talent regardless of age/position. Last year some reports suggested Stewart was higher on the Twin's draft board than Gray and if both were there they still would have taken Stewart. While safety is one of many factors that scouts look at when evaluating players it is only one part of the puzzle. Hopefully we won't be drafting in the top 5 of the draft much longer but while we are we have to get the BPA. You can find stars later in the draft but it does get harder out side of the top 5-10 picks. Now, who will be the BPA come draft day at #5 is what us draft junkies live for. I look forward to the debates over who prefers who like we had last year. To me, and others here at TwinsDaily, draft season never ends!

  19. Tons of college level guys fail. Painfully Wimmers was considered the safest pick his year and we know how that has turned out. Hultzen was taking in the top 5 because he was a safe quick to the bigs lefty which hasn't turned out well for the Mariners. If you are only going by stats the Twins should take a college position player every year. When you draft in the top 5 you have to go for star power, not safety. You just don't get many chances to draft those guys. (Yes, you can find stars later in the draft but it becomes significantly harder once you get out of the top 5 historically).
  20. Never too early to talk the draft! Definitely would like to see your current board Jeremy and be able to compare it vs mine. I was planning to post mine the week before college baseball season started.
  21. Since 2002 the A's have had 27 first round picks/supplemental first round picks. From 2002-2011 they only drafted college players with Swisher, Blanton, and Hudson Street being the only true big leaguers. Sonny Gray looked great in limited time last year. Since 2012 they have drafted 4 players in the first/supplemental first round and they all were HS players. Almost 12 years later I don't see any validity to that study. On the flip side after the 2013 draft BaseballAmerica released a series on the draft looking at HS vs College, value per draft position, and value per drafted players actual playing position. None of their data suggested that you shouldnt draft high school players. Obviously HS players have a higher bust rate, just as pitchers have a higher bust rate than position players. Risk vs reward. Plain and simple, the Twins need to draft BPA regardless of position or proximity to the majors. Seems to be working out with Buxton for us and Russell for the A's.
  22. It is never too early to talk the draft. Every year there are Buxton's and Harpers and Appels who stay at the top. While some top prospects will fall a majority will stay at the top. Jim Callis had an Ask BA about this.
  23. While Nola screams Twin's type player I just don't see him being a top 5 or top 10 talent. Ryan has gone for upside the last two drafts and I see him doing that again this year.
  24. Turner has a little loft in his swing so I can see him hitting a dozen home runs a year but not much more. What worries me is if he proves he is closer to Reyes he won't make it to us. Those damn white Sox love freak athletes. Either way this is a solid draft, especially at the top, and we should get an elite talent at 5.
  25. Some of the bloggers around here follow college baseball, the draft, and the minor leagues very closely. While none of us are pro scouts we can still use our knowledge of prospects to come to opinions on players. I personally pay a lot of attention to the draft and remember how the Twins were heavily linked to Gilmartin at the time. Didn't like his scouting reports then and don't like them now. You can be a lefty and have success with a 88-92 fastball but it usually requires great fastball movement, deceptive delivery, or a premium secondary pitch (none of which Gilmartin has). Unless his change up takes a big step forward I have a hard time seeing him being a long term big league starter. Maybe Gilmartin with turn into a back of the rotation starter. Maybe not. Either way I still like the trade for the Twins.
