  1. Why would Texas make this trade? It would seem to be a non-starter from their perspective.
  2. I'm still pissed that the Twins traded him last year! We should have held onto him and offered him a qualifying offer.
  3. Well since his point was that innings pitched was the best way to judge pitchers I guess I thought it was best to use well .... you know....Innings pitched. My bad!
  4. Yeah, because the ownership group will definitely learn their lesson. They won't contract the Twins or try to move the team out of state.
  5. So perhaps you can tell me how these statements mesh because they seem to be contradictory. The average innings pitched per year over the last 3 years: Joe Saunders 197IP Kevin Correia 157IP Mike Pelfrey 139IP
  6. I think many posters are overvaluing Morneau's worth come next offseason. We are seeing this year that good players in their prime are struggling to find contracts after they've turned down qualifying offers. Justin will be turning 33, coming off of a few injury plagued years (obviously we have no idea what will happen in 2013), hasn't hit the ball particularly well in few years. I understand that many people think Justin will have a nice rebound year, I actually think he will as well, but the odds at this point of him being worthy of a qualifying offer are not great. The odds that he turns down said qualifying offer and another team is willing to forfeit a first round pick for him I think is very small. To me, if the Twins need to make a decision on his extension early in the season and if they decide to part ways he needs to be traded at the deadline. Of course I would also eat a large portion of his salary if that bring back more of value in return but we all know that is not the Twins way.
  7. That would be incredibly surprising for several reasons. First, he only has 250ish AB's at AA is only 21. Second, he doesn't have a position to play with Morneau, Parmelee and Willingham on the team. He hasn't played CF since Rookie ball in 2010.
  8. If Benson plays well enough to go North with the Twins to start the season I don't see any way he isn't the opening day CF. If Benson is the 4th OF behind Mastro that means the Twins have totally given up on him (which leads to all kinds of questions). So if people think Mastro is going to get the start in CF to me that implies neither Benson nor Hicks comes north with the Twins. So who is the 4th OF in that situation?
  9. For those that think Mastroianni will start the season in CF do you think the Twins sign a 4th OF type last minute or bring up one of the AAAA guys? Who is available to be the back up CF that is currently in the Twins minor leagues?
  10. I may be in the minority but I really hope Benson wins the job out of ST. It would create another trade chip at some point if he can succeed and since this seems to be his last real chance....
  11. Let's hope so otherwise the next option might be the strip-able cardboard cutouts of Ryan and the Pohlad boys. I don't think anybody wants that!
  12. One pitcher will be less than a year removed from TJ surgery. One pitcher threw 120+ innings in 2012 including 8 consecutive starts to finish the season. So while you are right, Marcum could fall down in the shower or slip shoveling his drive and rupture his spleen, logic says Marcum is less of a health risk in 2013. Here's another way of looking at it. Would you prefer Gibson or Wimmers going forward?
  13. I feel obligated to state that the rank disgust with Butera displayed on this board is ridiculously overblown. As long as our 3rd catcher is getting <150 PA's it doesn't matter what his offensive abilities are. The difference between Butera and a catcher that hit .250 was six hits last season. 6 hits gentlemen. 6 hits. Now go ahead and tell me how wrong I am. I don't think I'll be back to argue with you. I just felt it was necessary to interject a little realism into this discussion.
  14. I'd rather have Marcum at the same years and $$$ that is being offered Saunders. Now whether Marcum would ever be interested in the Twins...who knows. Saunders is better than many of our alternatives however. So I guess I would have no problem with a 2 year deal.
  15. I really don't understand everyone's concerns about his elbow with the way the payroll, team make up and potential prospects currently sit. I'd rather have 21 starts from Shaun Marcum and 10 starts from Kevin Correia than 31 starts from Correia. As been mentioned ad nausea the Pohlads are just going to pocket whatever money isn't being spent over the next 3 years and since the payroll is in line to just continually drop signing Marcum has no impact on the ability to sign other players. Next year's payroll, after Morneau and Blackburn come off the books, is going to be close to $60 million. Add in the $25 million in increased TV revenue and the Twins will have somewhere between $40 and $65 million dollars to spend next offseason. Does anyone think they can/will spend anywhere near that amount? Does anyone think paying Marcum $10 million dollars next year of that $40-60 million is going to hamper the Twins next offseason? As far as I'm concerned the Twins can pay whatever they have to in order to bring Marcum here. I don't care if it is a one, two or three year deal. I would further hope if the Twins continue to stink they would be willing to eat a part of that salary to move Marcum, assuming he is a wanted commodity, for good prospects down the road. Other than taking money out of the Pohlad's pockets there is no downside to signing Marcum.
  16. Morneau is worth almost nothing right now. No team is going to take on $14m for a 1st baseman that has significant health questions and only slugged .750ish last year. The only way the Twins get anything significant in return is if they eat a large portion of his contract. If the Twins aren't willing to pay a pitcher more than $10m then there is little chance they will pick up a significant amount of Morneau's salary. Rosario, Sano and Buxton; why stop there? I think we should pencil the top HS pitcher into the Twins rotation come June!
  17. How many rookie fielders have the Twins just handed a job to out of ST without previous time in the majors? I know Joe back in '04. Anyone else?
  18. I've seen several people say similar things about Marcum and I just don't understand why. In his 6 seasons (4 in the AL East) he has a career 3.76 ERA, 1.224 WHIP, 7.3 K/9 and only once posted an ERA+ of under 100 and that was in his first year in the bigs. I know that many people have questions about his durability but how one can look at Marcum and see anything other than an above average pitcher... I just don't understand.
  19. It is wrong for Hunter to feel uncomfortable with somebody who disagrees with his viewpoint but it is ok for you to insult somebody who disagrees with yours? Frankly, I disagree with his view point and I still think your statements are worse than his.
  20. You can keep stating that spending is bad because the Phillies, Red Sox, etc... did not play well last year but when you look at the league as a whole the spenders win more than the non spenders. So yeah, spending might not significantly improve the Twins 2013 playoff chances, of course it might we don't know, but immediate success isn't the only point of spending in 2013. I would point you to Shane's post #56 as to other reasons spending is beneficial. Not spending does nothing to help your club. It only helps you bottom line short term.
  21. Two things; first, neither the Cubs nor the Mets are proof that spending does not win championships. They only show that spending doesn't guarantee championships. That is a subtle yet big difference. Second, while I know that you are specifically talking about championships, there is a correlation between spending and winning. Teams that spend more have a higher probability of winning then teams that spend less. While this correlation is currently not as strong as in the past it none the less still exists.
  22. According to Nygaard's payroll page the Twins obligations for 2013 is currently $72 million. In 2012 that would have put the Twins 24th out of 30 teams. So yes, it currently is like the late '90s. Except now the public just paid $350 million for Target Field. I believe there is an obligation to the tax payers of Hennepin County. The idea that it doesn't matter if the Twins cut payroll and pocket the difference is insulting. I think the most frustrating thing is there is no reason to be slashing payroll to the extent, and by extension not signing good FA's, that the Twins have. Bringing in crappy players because they're cheap doesn't help develop your minor league talent. Signing Correia instead of Marcum doesn't mean that Meyer will be ready to pitch this year instead of next year. The only reason I can see to NOT be spending the money is because either A) you want to increase your short term profits or you intentionally want to put a poorer product on the field.
  23. This idea makes no sense. A team that won't sign Lohse/Bourn because they don't want to lose their 1st round draft pick isn't going to then turn around a few months later and trade away significant prospects. From the Twins perspective they would need significant compensation for their risk like a top prospect which our trading partner would seemingly already have determined Lohse/Bourn aren't worth in the offseason.
  24. ahh...misunderstood you. I thought you were implying big things to come
  25. Call it $15m or $30m. Call it a gutting or a fleece job. Those are basically semantics in my question. The poster I quoted above seemed to be implying the Twins were getting "bargains" in the pitching department so that they could splurge elsewhere. My question is where? At this point it is looking incredible likely the Twins will just pocket that extra millions of dollars. I'll be disgusted if that is $10m or $30m. Why the team was unwilling to spend on FA pitching I may never understand. I certainly don't understand it right now.
