  1. Another prospect that seems to be flying under the radar, a la Arcia, is Pinto. At 24 he is a little old for his league but he is also a catcher and IIRC they tend to develop slower. After a rough couple years at A ball he had a very nice season at Fort Meyers last year and is destroying New Britain this year. If anyone is ever looking for a question to ask in a chat see if you can figure out what it is that evaluators don't like about Pinto.
  2. HAHAHA, Earlier today I was looking at the standings on July 1 and forgot to refresh my page back to the 18th. My bad!
  3. How do you figure that? Houston, Miami, Milwaukee, White Sox, Mariners, Mets and Cubs all have a worse record than the Twins.
  4. 8th as of the All Star break.
  5. That is a very intriguing question. For those prospect hounds out there, how many starting power pitcher prospects have their been in the last 5 years or so in our minor league system?
  6. Shairon Martis could move back to the rotation. He was in the opening day rotation and started 3 games. If they advance a player from New Britain then AA needs to find a new starter as well. Perhaps Hermsen returns to the rotation or Summers gets called up again from Fort Meyers. There is currently a 6 man rotation at Fort Meyers so promoting to NB shouldn't be a problem.
  7. I agree wholeheartedly but I would need more back than Seager. Perhaps if they tossed in 2 of the 3 prospects I mentioned earlier. I'm trying to not be a big homer here. Is that too much for Perkins? How about Seager, Dominguez and Rob Rasmussen?
  8. There were 15 pitchers this last offseason available in FA that had been average or better pitchers during the three years 2010-2012. I'm not really interested in rehashing this past offseason because everybody has already made up their minds and debating further won't change anything, however, I'm curious what makes you think the 2013-2014 FA class is so much better? Depending on how this trade deadline works out the Twins could have as much as $80 million in payroll flexibility. Don't forget that each team gets an additional $25 million from MLB to spend.
  9. I am unsure if they would give up Lee but I find a few other arms intriguing as well. What about a package of Magill, Jose Dominguez and Julio Urias? Yimi Garcia is another nice relief prospect if the Twins want more control than Dominguez offers.
  10. I think that depends on who is interested and how much the Twins are willing to eat of his salary.
  11. Talented pitchers that profile as 1/2 starters will always be in demand and make truckloads of money in FA. As long as Johnson pitches the rest of this season he will be in line for a Sanchez like deal, IMO. Perhaps he will only get 4 years due to his injury history. Of course if he goes back on the DL and there are specific injury concerns, not just generic "he has been injured in the past", then he could get a 1 or 2 year make good deal like Marcum got this year but for a higher salary.
  12. Jeremy has Rosario listed as a 2014 add just like Sano. Which one of you is the liar here?
  13. Javier Pimentel was another $500,000+ international signing a few years ago and he is currently at Elizabethton. He hasn't put up much in the way of numbers yet but when he signed he ranked in the 10-20 range for international prospects and was known for his bat.
  14. So would a lot of the FA pitchers available. Why would you chose one that would, supposedly, cost you a draft pick? Or, if you are set on losing the draft pick, why wouldn't you actually go after a pitcher that has a track record of being good in that case?
  15. I think the Marlins are well on their way. They brought in talent through FA then flipped it for 2 top 100 prospects, another fringey top 100 prospect and a very good, though admittedly problematic, major league shortstop. The idea that it is either FA or the farm system is a false dichotomy.
  16. I agree that the Twins probably won't. They avoid risk like the plague. IMO however, 20 starts from Josh Johnson + 10 starts from Hendriks/Walters/AAAA dujour is better than 30 starts from Pelfrey/Correia/Marquis/Livan Hernandez.
  17. Hughes has had 1 season of sub 4.00 ERA and that was when he pitched out of the bullpen. His career ERA is 4.42. He hasn't been an above average pitcher in years. I don't get the fascination. If the Twins are going to give up a draft pick it should be for a pitcher that is above average.
  18. I actually think the Yankees have a few intriguing pitchers down their prospect list a ways that might matchup with a Morneau rental. The big name is Dellin Betances who is still only 25 and we could stash in the pen for a couple years to see if he can regain any kind of command; he has still struck out 71 in 60 innings with only 40 hits allowed. Nik Turley - AA 89IP 79H 43BB 96K's Left handed Jose Ramirez-AA/AAA 66IP 46H 33BB 73K's Rafael De Paula- A/A+ 79IP 61H 28BB 108K's FB touches 99mph. Tom Kahnle- AA 40IP 23H 25BB 45K's Relief Pitcher. Fastball touching 97mph. Perhaps part of a package?
  19. Agreed, I was trying to make the point, poorly clearly, that for Hicks it was no or never where as Walker has more time to make adjustments.
  20. I actually think we see Bryan Haar promoted instead of Rhodes. Rory hasn't hit particularly well since the GCL 3 seasons ago. Hicks is also already 23 so if he is even a possibility in the Twins braintrust he needed to move up and then move again early in 2014 to AA and look to get a big league shot at spring training in 2015 as a 25 year old. Now that is probably unlikely to all happen but it is the only way I can see him making the Twins as anything other than a bench bat for a season or two.
  21. I would guess that Zach Jones goes to New Britain as well. He has some control problems but he is absolutely destroying the FSL. In 35 IP he has 50k's and only given up 18 Hits. I wonder if part of the reasoning on Walker was Kvasnicka. Another reason for keeping Walker at CR might be the the fact that he is striking out in 22% of his PA's. Combine that with his age and they might want him to stay put to work on that swing and miss tendency where as Dalton Hicks, who also strikes out a bunch, is already 23.
  22. I do not remember you responding to my previous question, hence why I asked it a second time. I'm sorry if I struck a nerve.
  23. I would still rather have signed many of the pitchers being maligned in this thread instead of Correia. Kevin's numbers are about as good as they could possible be and still he is probably untradable. There was no upside in our signings this past season and to me that makes them mistakes. I think MLBTradeRumors put it nicely:
  24. I asked you this once before but never really got a response. Who is the best comp to Perkins that has been traded in the last few years? Perkins value is not just that he is a great closer but that he is also signed for the next 3 seasons as well at a cheap price. As far as I know there isn't a comp out there for Perkins. Soria could have been except he didn't get traded.
  25. I think there are several interesting pieces in the Dodgers farm system. Personally I am enamored with Julio Urias. He is a 16 year old LHP dominating A ball in the Midwest League. 41K's 13BB's in 35IP with a 2.80 ERA. They also have some interesting bullpen arms in Yimi Garcia at AA and Jose Dominguez who has pitched 6 games in the majors this year. Garcia has a .76 WHIP with 53K's in 46IP. Dominguez has some control issues, 4.3 BB/9 in his minor league career, but his fastball sits 97-102 mph and he has an average slider to pair with that heat. Perhaps a Urias, Dominguez and a nearly MLB ready arm that is ok, like Magill or Rob Rasmussen, for Perkins makes sense. Urias is a low minors arm with potential, Dominguez is future closer and we could fill another hole in the 2014 rotation, albeit with a back of the rotation arm.
