  1. A future that is perhaps 8-10 years away. That would be like saying Mauer should never have played catcher since he is going to have to move to 1st base anyways. First base is the easiest position to fill. Sano should play 3rd for as long as he can snag it defensively, of course all of this assumes he turns into the player we all hope he will which is anything but guaranteed.
  2. Every report this season has been that Sano can stick at 3rd base into his late 20's probably. This includes unbiased reports by non-Twins personnel.
  3. If the Twins don't want him why would he bring back talent in a trade? At best you might get a similar player from another organization that the Twins think just needs a change of scenery.
  4. Thanks, I need to update my spreadsheet!
  5. AL Rookies w/>100 PA Jose Iglesias .878 OPS Nick Franklin .788 David Lough .757 Wil Myers .735 Oswaldo Arcia .725 .... 10) Aaron Hicks .630 Hicks would have to have one hell of a second half to put himself in position to even be considered a legit contender let alone win it. His fate was sealed by the end of April.
  6. ROY winners (hitters only) since 2001 Harper .817 Trout .963 Posey .862 Coghlan .850 Soto .868 Longoria .874 Braun 1.004 Pedroia .822 Ramirez .833 Howard .923 Bay .908 Crosby .745 Berroa .789 Hinske .846 Pujols 1.013 Suzuki .838 Their average OPS is .872. You're right I guessed too high but wasn't that far off. I think my larger point still stands. To even reach an OPS of .800 for the season Hicks needs to have an OPS of about .975 over the second half. That isn't going to happen. The Twin that has a chance at ROY is Arcia although that took a blow after being sent down to AAA again today.
  7. You mean the same Yadier Molina that has 27 dbls and 7 HR's compared to Mauer's 30 dbls and 8 HR's?
  8. To be clear I think Colabello has earned more than 14 PA's in the majors.
  9. Agreed, the Twins won't do that this year. I don't even think it's 2015 but perhaps 2016!
  10. Players eligible for the rule 5 draft include Jorge Polanco, Max Kepler, AJ Achter, Kennys Vargas, Logan Darnell, Alex Wimmers, Andrew Albers, Candido Pimentel, Angel Morales, Matt Hauser, Deibinson Romero, Nate Roberts, Daniel Ortiz, Manuel Soliman, Adrian Salcedo, Ryan O'Rourke, Tom Stuifbergen and Aaron Thompson. However I'm not sure there are many sweetners there that the Twins wouldn't want themselves. The Twins are relying on their prospects to bring them back to relevance and so trading any that might eventually help you seems unwise. There are plenty of potential openings on the 40 man roster including: Wilkin Ramirez, Drew Butera, Colabello, Clete Thomas, Cole De Vries, BJ Hermsen, Mike Pelfrey, Jamey Carrol, Liam Hendriks, PJ Walters, Sam Deduno, Escobar or Florimon, Thielbar, Pedro Hernandez, Duensing, Swarzak and Danny Santana. Clearly some of these will be on the 2014 40 man roster but each of these players is vulnerable in one way or another IMO.
  11. Hicks would have to OPS ~1.200 over the second half of the season to raise his OPS to .900 for the season. That would put him in the conversation in recent years. Safe to say he won't be remotely considered.
  12. Many teams have gone from 90+ losses to 90+ wins in back to back years. The Rays (07-08), Orioles (11-12), Braves (90-91), Phillies (92-93), Mets (83-84), Tigers (05-06), White Sox (89-90) and probably more. I stopped after looking at half the teams and I only looked over the last 30 years.
  13. Baseball Reference confirms. Camp to Marlins for Santana + Cash.
  14. It seems most people's viewpoints on trading Perkins depend in a large part on when one perceives the Twins will be competitive. If you think the Twins compete in 2014 then it's a no brainer to hold onto Perk. 2015, only trade if the return is significant. 2016, move him for a good offer but doesn't have to be a home run. Then there seem to be one or two people that think prospects are too risky or they just are emotionally attached or they want something to watch and long term isn't as important.
  15. I don't see any way the Twins trade Mauer. He's the face of their franchise. The only way I could see it happening is, as you say, he asks for a trade and I don't see that happening. He's a Minnesota boy with a Minnesota wife who are starting a family. I would guess stability would be pretty important right now.
  16. Wimmers will be rule 5 draft eligible following this season. That will be an interesting decision for the Twins. I think the biggest problem for the Twins is how little Wimmers has pitched. He has pitched a total of 62 innings in the last 3 years. How long will it take to build his arm strength back up to enable him to throw 200 innings/year? I stated this earlier in a different thread but I wouldn't be surprised if the Twins made Wimmers a BP/Swingman for 2014 which would allow him to pitch all season but control the number of innings he pitches.
  17. I thought I might have missed an announcement.
  18. Yup. I was only making the point that it isn't Sano or bust.
  19. Finding his stated goals is easy, knowing his actual thoughts on the matter is entirely different. I'm of the opinion that the Twins primary goal is to make as much money as possible over the long term. Any other goal runs a distant 2nd unless it helps to maximize the profit.
  20. With the current run of good health from our starting pitching staff Rochester suddenly has a surplus of starters, unless I missed some announcement somewhere. Hendriks, De Vries, Walters, Darnell, Hernandez, Worley and Albers all are looking for starts. How will/should the Twins resolve this? Move someone down to AA? "DL" someone? Start converting someone to long relief? The obvious answer would be to trade Pelfrey or Correia, but if that were to happen it probably won't be for another couple weeks (and I think that is a very big "if"). So how does/should this play out Twins Daily?
  21. I think Perkins could bring back a top 150 prospect and potentially a top 100. Perkins' value, while a well above average relief pitcher, is driven by that contract. Much like Span. I haven't done the research on this but I doubt many of the previous reliever trades have involved the trifecta that Perkins brings; cheap, long term, talent. Who is the best comp when you take into consideration the contract and the talent?
  22. Colabello, the new Slama!
  23. If Sano doesn't pan out or doesn't stick at 3B there are other options in the farm system long term. Travis Harrison at Beloit as well as Javier Pimentel and Amaurys Minier at rookie ball who were both big money international signings. They are all several years out so a stop gap FA would need to be signed but there is a potential replacement besides Sano in the Twins system. That said I wouldn't trade Plouffe either. He is a decent bat that could still be around when when the Twins are ready to compete. His positional versatility adds value as well.
  24. When you are solely counting on prospects to turn your franchise around then you need to collect as many high quality guys as possible so that even when a number of them don't pan out you still have enough make to make an impact at the major league level. Right now Perkins seems to be the only player who might bring back a significant return so I think you move him for the best offer. I don't think Perkins will still be an effective closer by 2016, which is when I think Twins will potentially be opening their window of contention, so this is a very easy decision IMO.
  25. On a related topic, when is the Field f/x system supposed to be up and running?
