  1. It's not about resting the starters, but about getting the bench players playing time. I do think there is value in that when you've already won the series.
  2. My oh my! Maybe there should be a mercy rule??
  3. He's probably the one pitcher we have who would even be under consideration, but I can't see us getting more than the required 1 slot, and I think you have to give that to Willingham.
  4. I see that Stuifbergen has been activated from the DL at Fort Myers (Munoz on the DL in his place). I'm still learning who we have in our system. Can someone give me the low-down on Stuifbergen?
  5. I've noticed that as well. When the infield botches a play, or when the umpire shafts him by calling time at the last moment, he's able to shake it off.
  6. I agree. This gives them a chance to sit their starters tomorrow and give the bench players some time. And who knows, we might win that one too...
  7. We're seeing now why they took him rule 5 and then traded for him to keep him here. My only concern here is he's been sitting on the bench a long time during this big inning. Hopefully he can keep his focus.
  8. I concur. This board is designed for armchair managing and second guessing (and I enjoy doing that as well!) but in the end we got the win. Whether it was luck or making the right calls, I'm not going to critique a manager when we get a W.
  9. Not only is Willingham the obvious choice, but he actually can go there on merit, and not just because the Twins need a representative.
  10. I was listening to the Twins pregame on radio (as I was driving over to the Saints game tonight:)) and they were saying that Buxton is going to be in town in the next few days and a quick signing was possible. Don't know if that is wishful thinking or not, but we can hope!
  11. There we go! - walk off magic coming?
  12. Ouch! Hope you feel better soon. As a favorite movie of mine quotes, "Them summer colds are the worst!"
  13. The benefit would be that perhaps he was promoted too quickly. I was listening to an interview on 1500am the other day with Roy Smalley, and he likes the idea of letting players move up 1 level at a time. Prove to yourself (and everyone else) that you belong in high-A, then in AA, then in AAA. Then, when you're cruising in AAA, there should be no doubts to anyone (including yourself) that you belong in the show. I thought that idea had merit; hence my musings. I don't think that needs to always be adhered to rigorously; there will always be exceptions that demand to be made. That said, though, Dozier spent very little time in AAA, and his numbers (both batting and fielding) were OK but not great; perhaps he was promoted too quickly, because of lack of depth in the MLB roster. That said, now that he's here, I'm leaning to keeping him up myself, for the reasons many here have mentioned. I just thought it was a legitimate question for discussion.
  14. They couldn't put him in the minors, unless they traded for him. A rule 5 pick has to remain on the active roster or he is sent back to his original club. We don't know if they talked to the White Sox about a trade or not; possibly Chicago wanted too much for him.
  15. Isn't a firing squad a bit harsh? How about we all just stand around and whip him with wet noodles instead?
  16. I think it makes sense - he stays on the 40-man roster so it's easy to move him back up quickly if he's needed for a spot start or someone goes down.
  17. I have to respectfully disagree. Is he an everyday starter? Probably not. But he could be a decent utility middle infielder. He's better at 2nd than short, but his defensive numbers are similar at either. Career he's averaging .250 hitting - if he can get back to that this year (and he isn't too far away) he can fit on the bench nicely.
  18. If they stay healthy and their rotation remains halfway decent - I'd expect them to play slightly under 500 ball the rest of the way. But for the most part they've been very lucky to not have a key injury to the lineup; somebody's bound to go down before the season is over. If they trade any of the better players for prospects, or the rotation falters again - we're back to 400 ball at best.
  19. OK, with last night's performance, I'm starting to ask if it's time to make an adjustment and send Dozier back down for more seasoning. He started off hot, but both his bat and (especially) his fielding have tailed off the past couple of weeks. He's been up here for about a month now, and has 8 errors. He's made some spectacular plays, too, but that doesn't cover not making the ones that should be made. I know there is an argument to be made that he should be given a chance to work this out up here in the bigs. Give him more time to adjust to major league pitching and learning how to field. Given we are not contenders this season, maybe that's OK; losing a few extra games won't hurt that much (although I love to win regardless). I also don't know what the corresponding move would be, who'd you would bring up. Carroll can go back over to short, but it's not as if we have a bunch of middle infielders knocking on the door at Rochester. But now that our starting pitching is starting to turn around a little bit, don't we owe it to them to give them the best defense possible? Thoughts?
  20. The thing that made the Delmon trade good was we got rid of Delmon. Oliveros and Nelson may just end up a nice bonus, though.
  21. Granted his progress has been slow, but it has been fairly constant. He spent two years in Beloit, but last year was in Fort Myers and this year is in New Britain. I'd say wait until he stalls, then you can consider it. He's only 22; another couple of years will tell the tale on him.
  22. OK, thanks. I misread your first post, and you are right. That makes sense to me now.
  23. Are you sure? By what I read, the $100K per pick is not added to the pool and can't be accumulated. Any pick after round 10 can be given at most $100K, and any overage put you at risk of fines/losing picks. That makes sense; the purpose is to prevent teams not signing a lot of later round picks to artificially inflate the bonus pool for someone they want badly, thus skewing the purpose of the bonus pool in the first place. I could be wrong though.
  24. Nuts. He was their best starter so far this year.
  25. Keep in mind that Rookie league rosters are larger than full-season rosters. Teams can have 35 players on the active list, although only 30 can be dressed for any one game. That goes for both Elizabethton and GCL.
