  1. The question is, who are they offering in return?
  2. Interesting that no other organization picked up him. Maybe he wanted to go?
  3. I hope he gets drafted next year, and again refuses to sign, and gets drafted the year after that, and again refuses to sign, and gets drafted the year after that...etc... This was the year he had the most leverage - he will regret this decision.
  4. I personally think this goes too far. If they're going to do this, then I'd like to see a Christian Night (where my Christian beliefs are actively promoted; not just church groups attending) and a Jewish Night and a Muslim Night and a Hindu Night.
  5. C'mon, don't hold back. Share what you really think. It doesn't do any good to hold this stuff in and internalize it and let it fester.
  6. It'll be interesting to see what they do - New Britain only has 1 roster spot available and Rochester is full. No matter what happens, somebody's going to get cut, DLed, or demoted - unless they leave Benson at Fort Myers... If they do promote Bigley, I wonder if Thomas will be cut to make room.
  7. One could also turn that around, and say that the Twins spent more on the draft than anyone else.
  8. I think BA got fooled as well. At one point they had him listed as signed in the draft database, but just in the past couple of days they moved him back to unsigned.
  9. Their pool was highest also because each round they picked second - based entirely on their record. And as I said, in future years international signing pools will also be based on record. Another part of the new CBA does also provide for small market and low revenue teams to get additional draft picks (and hence additional pool money). Everything you asked for is either in place or is being added to the system already.
  10. What is an "unsigning?" Did he use vanishing ink? In any case, Baseball America has now updated their draft database to show Martinez as unsigned.
  11. The teams that do poorly the previous season do get to spend more - the Twins had the highest pool available this year ($12M) because of their poor record in 2011 and the number of compensatory picks they had. The New York Yankees had a total of ~$4M, and the Los Angeles Angels only had $1.6M. In future years, the same will also be true for international signings - the size of the pool available will vary depending on record. This first year, to start things off, they just made everybody even.
  12. Baseball America has then currently being $200K under collective pool value for those signed, but they had listed Martinez as being signed, so their numbers may be inaccurate.
  13. I predict they will trade Liriano for a PTBNL and then call up Logan Darnell from New Britain and set baseball history for the first rotation entirely beginning with "D".
  14. Only in America - the land of opportunity!
  15. I think it's the reverse, actually. That $4M (less, actually, since that number assumed they went 5% over the pool limit) can not be used for other draft picks; if Appel doesn't sign, his slotted pool value disappears and can't be used for other picks. They also have a hard $2.9M cap for international signings regardless (as do all teams this year). The money that is not spent on the draft or international signings, however, could be offered to a free agent or used as a pot sweetener in a trade. The money comes out of a different pocket, so to speak, so it is not a straight transfer over, but the net effect is the same. Kind of like robbing Peter to pay Paul.
  16. Baseball America has it wrong, then. They list Martinez as being signed in their draft database.
  17. That's the fun of being a fan. We don't need logic - we can gripe and moan at will whenever we feel like it. P.S. We do the same thing in other areas of our life as well - we want all the luxuries and perqs, and then we want somebody else to pay for it.
  18. I would want Taillon, McPherson or Heredia as part of the deal. We don't get one of those, then we're not getting enough and we should keep Span.
  19. I also am somewhat suspect of the numbers, because the books of neither team is public record and we could be very well comparing apples and oranges. That being said, I think the question being raised here is not what should the Twins payroll be, but are their other expenses out of whack compared to other MLB teams. Payroll we've got a pretty good handle on - the numbers are readily available. We don't know how much is being spent in the back office, on scouting, on medical staff, on administration, etc. I think Yoosh is suggesting that there is fat there that needs to be trimmed and which could then be reinvested in player payroll.
  20. I remember a number of posters who wanted us to take Gausman instead of Buxton. Sounds like we made the right choice.
  21. The Twins have done a good job this year signing their top picks - only 1 player drafted in rounds 1-10 is unsigned: LJ Mazzilli. My question is, will he sign, or will he return for another year at school? I found an article on the internet which seemed to indicate he expected to be drafted in the first two rounds, which would carry a bonus of $500K+. Instead, he fell to the ninth round, with a slot of $130.8K. According to Baseball America, the Twins are currently $208.5K under their bonus pool, so they could theoretically offer Mazzilli up to around $340K, which is probably a bit less than he was hoping for (that assumes that all draft picks signed in rounds 11-40 all sign for at most $100K each). However, given that the Twins bonus pool for the year was about $12.4M, and that they can spend up to 5% above without losing a draft pick, they could theoretically have about $600K additional they could use if they want. That could allow them to give Mazzilli the money he thought he might get even if he hadn't fallen to the ninth round. So anybody heard any news on this, one way or another?
  22. I guess I need this clarified as to what your point is. I would have said that winning is the definition of success.
  23. Duensing seems to be like Swarzak - he is more effective when opposing teams don't have time to prepare for him. That's why he's been more effective coming out of the bullpen than in the rotation. He only went back into the rotation this year because of injuries and mass ineffectiveness of other starters. I expect him to go back to the bullpen once Walters and Pavano are healthy (which may be some time in Pavano's case - I'm not sure he's motivated to come back this year). That being said, he is a better choice than some names I have seen mooted on these boards (French? Really!?), and it's not as though keeping him in the rotation is going to cost us a division title, so...
  24. No injuries! So far this year we have been very lucky not to have a position player go down - and we're still 11 games back! Imagine if Mauer or Willingham or Span or Revere were down for 6 weeks.
  25. I find it difficult to rank him behind Dozier, given Dozier's performance at the plate and in the field. If you want to make the argument that Dozier deserves a chance to play and show what he can do (and that Casilla has already had that chance) I'm willing to listen, but I just don't see how, based on current performance, Dozier is better than Casilla.
