  1. I think tonight was the night to steal the old Indians stadium theme song: Get up boys and hit 'em one more time We may be losing now but we can't stop trying We need just one victory and we're on our way Prayin' for it all day and fightin' for it all night Give us just one victory, it will be alright We may feel about to fall but we go down fighting You will hear the call if you only listen Underneath it all we are here together shining still https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVatBy_4GpM
  2. Still headscratching that he wasn't invited to instructs this year as a pitcher- still gotta be a lot for Dereck to learn about his new craft.
  3. I've been a Cub fan all my life, and the NL seemed to be clearly the stronger league years ago, but my perception is that AL has generally been stronger overall lately in the things we can quantify- the AL inheriting horrible Houston evened things out a bit, but now the Astros are one of the best young clubs in all of baseball. And without the Dodgers' ridiculous $300M payrolls, and the ongoing success of the Cards and Giants, the NL has been pretty moribund. And I'm not sure how we can discount interleague play- where the AL has mostly had the upper hand for a while, this despite the lack of use of the DH handicap in the NL home parks.
  4. You nailed it spin, especially on the Mets- they are by far the best team going away in the division, but their record outside of the NL East is only 43-43, @ .500. The Braves have the worst record outside of the division @ 30-53- a winning percentage of only .361 (30-53). But the Phillies (.384), Marlins (.429) and even the Nats ((.453) are pretty awful, too.
  5. The AL is still better overall, top to bottom... again. The good teams in the AL beat each other up, the good teams in the NL pad their numbers on a lot of bad teams.
  6. Just one more reason why it's important to take NL stats with a grain of salt. AL vs. NL is 165-130. Only 5 AL teams have a losing record vs. the NL- and unfortunately, the Twins are one of those 5.
  7. This appears to be the opening orchestration by the organization to bringing Hunter back.
  8. I'd go further and posit that he would have been much better than Esco, and that's exactly why I still would have made the trade, even knowing in advance that this year was going to end for Tulo in mini-disaster. Two-three more years of Tulo at SS/1B, then he could have gone over to 1st base/DH full-time to finish out his contract as Mauer was eased out.
  9. I haven't had time to read the article, but based on how the Twins tend to operate, it sure appears that the auto-default position for who's who in the depth rotation hierarchy, is to defer to the expensive veterans. Which means Santana, Hughes, Nolasco and Milone are going to start until their arms fall off- or if Ryan can somehow pull off a trade. And that also means that May and Duffey are going into 2016 fighting with Gibson for the #5 spot and the #6 and #7 depth spots, with Berrios likely to leapfrog all of them by the month of May., plus the possible resurrection of Meyer. The easiest veteran to trade would of course, be Milone. That would then mean 4 deserving young arms (plus Meyer makes 5) for two starting spots But that would also mean no LHSP presence for the Twins, plus ,would they get decent value in return for Milone to satisfy gun-shy Ryan in pulling the trigger? I'm guessing that Ryan will stand pat after being low-balled at the Winter Meetings- and then "The Plan" for 2016 will be to hope to move Nolasco and Milone in-season after they've built up their value.
  10. Look for him to be starting- but for the Pirates- by 2017.
  11. A lot different scenarios and team needs under which the Twins will operate by then. (And I tend to doubt Terry will be calling the day to day shots by that point in time.) And if Wade ends up on the developmental slow train- then he's likely to be passed by better prospects elsewhere in the system- for example- not all of their hot SS prospects are going to stay at the position.
  12. I hope you have time to adopt Wade again next year, I appreciated your updates. Wade is an intriguing under the radar prospect, who appears destined to be blocked at the chance of ever playing with the Twins. I'd like for Seth to ask what goes through Wade's mind, knowing that Buxton, Hicks, Rosario and Kepler will limit his opportunities for promotion over the next 5-7 years, no matter how well quickly he progresses through the organization.
  13. Everything in the Target Field program is scripted down to the last second. I'm sure the Twins organist is a nice lady, but what she delivers may just as well be pre-recorded Mall Music-, it's time to go get someone a lot younger and then give them wide latitude, like the free-form, "crowdsourcing" Braves organist: http://www.wired.com/2011/05/tweeting-baseball-organist/ Wired: "You’ve made some amusing suggestions in your feed about song choices. I especially enjoyed the idea that you’d introduce Dillon Gee of the New York Mets just by playing an extended G note. How much latitude do you have in terms of getting weird with these? And which of your more avant-garde choices are you especially proud of?" Braves organist, Matt Kaminski: ‘I think that organists add a spontaneous edge that you can’t get with prerecorded music. I can play something at a moment’s notice. They’ve pretty much given me the OK on almost everything that I’ve done.'
  14. You could be of even more help if you let me know when we officially stop needing a "Leap Year."
  15. Bob, Vielma was 1.6 years younger than league average, and the stats show he flipped the switch on June 3- PA 310 Slash .322/.380/.356 BB%/K% 8.7%/11.5%. What's not to like if you have a potential OBP machine and speedster to turn it over in the #9 spot- with plus-plus defense @ SS? Did you notice any growth as a hitter in the last 3 months that confirm this nice run and possibly indicate that this could trranslate to the majors in a couple years? I'm pleasantly surprised that Vielma made this fairly exclusive list. Did you see enough of the other FSL clubs to affirm that it's warranted? And again, does such a high honor indicate that he has a legitimately higher ceiling than MLB utility man?
  16. 24 year old 5'11" bulldog Low-D-1 College pitcher vs. 20 year old 6'3" HS Athletic Stud High Major QB still learning how to pitch- Not comparable- but that's a nice rhyme and it might be the mantra that keeps propelling the Little Engine that Could ever forward. (BTW,, it's "Mat").
  17. I find the organist's over-use of the same 4 public domain songs, over and over and over, divisive. Time to get a little more creative- and for Twins' management to not be afraid to pay out a few royalty pittances to deserving musicians. As of now, when the organist does one of her little bits for the millionth time, it's just one more reason to utilize the mute button.
  18. And especially because "Mauer got his" on a first pitch fat one- the type of pitch he typically lays off of- and often becomes the most hittable pitch in the AB- and ends up driving fans crazy.
  19. Orville Nix would disagree.
  20. Chief, do you remember last May when I asked you about the best description for the Twins as being Luck meeting Destiny? There have been at least a dozen times since then when they would have completely folded it up in previous years, and yet on September 28, here we are... a pretty improbable, but thoroughly enjoyable run.
  21. Yep- totally agree- I thought they'd challenge KC this year to the end. If Carlos Santana bounces back to career norms- their 1-4 hitters would be as good as anyone in the AL, save maybe Toronto; Plus their quality, deep pitching staff all coming back and healthy (and a new stud acquired from the Cards om the Moss trade),\; Plus for depth coming up- they had 3 straight years of drafting 3 stud center fielders in the 1st round- who are all close to knocking on the door in 2016 (combine the best K/9 rate in both the AL and NL with an OF defense that potentially matches the Royals, and you'd have a pretty imposing problem trying to score enough runs to beat the Indians)
  22. Yep, you, me and a lot of others, as well. I'm more than happy to eat that filet-o-crow-under-glass.
  23. 1) Nick Gordon Key to his big success at the plate after May 31... goals for next year... influence of his brother/father in his off-season workout plans 2) Alex Meyer Retrace his timeline with him... from being the most dominant pitcher in the International League up until early August, 2014, his shoulder problems cropping up in late August of that year, to his rehab program, to struggling badly in spring training and into the regular season, to his banishment to the bullpen followed by an up and down completion to the season, to where he is now with his mechanics and stuff, to what the near future holds for him as a MN Twin... 3) Nick Burdi Retrace a similar timeline to Meyer's... from a top preseason prospect pick to click to inglorious demotion back to A ball, to a mixed bag of part-redemption/part nightmare upon his return to Chattanooga from August 14 to September 20 (1.77 ERA .178 BA 14.16 K/9 but also a horrendous 7.97 BB/9 with a clearly unacceptable 1.52 WHIP) What do the Twins have him specifically focusing on in the offseason to move beyond the 2015 disappointments? 4) Tyler Jay What are the differences between NCAA and HIgh A hitting? What have the Twins coaches added or subtracted from his pitching repertoire and workout routines? What are his goals in 2016? Starting? Relieving? Starting in High A? Relieving in AA as a fast track route to the majors, instead?
  24. +1 Just looking at the picture, Palacios just has that confident "look" and build of a budding star. The both look like fun-loving future fan favorites. Do you have a feeling for where this duo starts out in 2016? Can Palacios get right on the fast track to Cedar Rapids out of Spring Training and set his own timetable from there based on his performance? And is Arraez's arm good enough to become a true solid utility man?
  25. I do understand and acknowledge that he's better than you and I at SS ( I'm a lefty, so I never got my shot at SS ), and he's considered "good" versus all the other high schoolers and minor leaguers that never made the majors. It's just that he's just not considered "good" amongst his actual MLB peers, the rest of us mere peons just don't belong anywhere in that same conversation. ***(1) With WAR being a cumulative stat, being ranked 11th in games played should translate and correlate to much higher than 45th in WAR rankings for SS in order to be considered "good"- it's obvious on a bell curve distribution that Meares is on the wrong side of the graph- 45th out of 76. 2) Meares had 1040 PAs between 1993 and 1995 to just barely qualify as "qualified" in the Fangraphs rankings. If you move the parameters down just 40 PAs- to the 1000 PA threshold during the same time frame- Meares drops to 17th rated SS out of 25- that again is pretty clearly, not "good".)
