  1. Corrected by Berardino via Twitter: JB ‏ @MikeBerardino could Ervin Santana pitch in a game 163? Or is that considered postseason? Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 10m10 minutes ago Mike Berardino retweeted JB He could pitch a 1-game tiebreaker on that Monday. He could not not pitch in WC game or beyond. Mike Berardino added,
  2. Great coverage on Wade. Thanks for keeping it updated. Nice to see the guy still find ways to make an impact on important games even when he's adjusting-on-the-fly to the higher pitching level.
  3. The history of success for 6-man rotations isn't too extensive, the latest attempted failure being the Mets. After defending the 6-man experiment for the first couple months and dealing with the managerial angsting, the internal pissing and moaning and the external second-guessing, here's what Terry Colllins had to say about the 6-man: Funny stufff by Collins, I think I could be persuaded to pull for the Mets in the NL in the postseason. Meanwhile, back to the Twins, this sounds more like a game of 5-seated musical chairs... the music is bound to stop for someone. Hughes, Duffey, and especially Pelfrey, are all major question marks as to their level of effectiveness going into the stretch run. I like your thinking about Santana, though. The Twins talk about resting young and tired arms, but Santana doesn't need any rest, skip another Duffey/Pelfrey turn if either is ineffective. Under the current 6-man set-up, Santana would pitch in Game 162 to close out the season.vs. Kansas City I'd rather he get one extra start before then, thus setting him up for throwing in Game 159 on October 1 vs. Cleveland, and setting him up for a possible Game 163 one-game playoff start, or helping to clinch the wild card in a relief role on short rest in game 162, on October 4 vs. the aforementioned Royals.
  4. Yeah, the rotation situation seems a bit fluid, but in point of fact, Pelfrey is being supplanted for one game- bumped from the Tuesday start and isn't scheduled to start again until Saturday and here's the actual headline from the article in question: Twinsights: Phil Hughes to start Tuesday, Mike Pelfrey on ice So... I guess the starting situation has turned a little chilly, too. And based on the unclear nature of the clubhouse uncertainty on this matter of the 6-man rotation according to the author, a little foggy, too.
  5. Thanks Arky. I was pretty sure it had happened before at some higher MiLB level... and is a part of MLB written rules. Not sure how well that would play around a Low A league though- for a top-line pitcher to be starting in the clinching game of a playoff round... unwritten rules and all.
  6. Who are you talking about... I'm not so sure if that's still the case... Rays' Hu dazzles as Stone Crabs win FSL playoff opener Finding a comfort zone on a new team can take time. For Tampa Bay right-hander Chih-Wei Hu, all it took was a shot in the playoffs. In his sixth outing since being traded from the Twins, Hu led the Class A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs to a 1-0 win over the Daytona Tortugas for a 1-0 series lead in the Florida State League Championship Series on Thursday. Hu tossed a career-high eight shutout innings, scattering five singles and one walk while striking out nine. http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/5/6/148586456/cuts/Hu_new_cjmfbi8g_xxo9ldw4.jpg
  7. It's all moot for now. Hughes will supplant Pelfrey on Tuesday:
  8. Not doubting you, but... any citations?
  9. Nailed it Nick on what Jepsen is throwing, a lot of credit has to go to Allen on the repertoire make-over. First strikes, Swinging strikes, contact rates are all improved versus Jepsen's time with the Rays. Line drive rate is down, pull rate is waaay down. But Drjim is on to something here, let's hold off there in over-praising this trade as some sort of panacea... there are some bubble stats that seem bound to pop- ie, BABIP (.174), LOB (89%) and HR/FB (5.9%) are bound to normalize. As we so vividly recall from his appearance on Wednesday night, Jepsen's Hard Hit rate with the Twins (34.1%) would rank 7th worst among all relievers over a full season. (fun fact- Neal Cotts is worse, at 35.6% over the full season). All that said, the guy has demonstrated that he has the right personality to step up to the closer/high leverage reins. Perhaps he can act as an additional mentoring influence to May and some of the other hard-throwing up-and-comers- both for the remainder of this year and next- but I hope Ryan doesn't start negotiations about a contract extension. Very likable personality both on-field and during the off-field interviews. Pulling for him- but not counting on him- to carry the pen without Perkins at 100%.
  10. A beat writer isn't likely to have just made this up out of whole cloth, but could it possibly be allowable for a major league pitcher to start in the deciding game of a Class A playoff series?
  11. After last night, it's now 24K/11BB in 14.2 IP since his return... but I'm with Seth, it most likely isn't going to happen. But I wouldn't mind seeing them roll the dice, give Burdi a low-leverage MLB taste and, for good measure, remove more of the 40-man roster detritus in the process. Burdi is actually wilder after the demotion, than before: First stint in AA (4/9 - 6/25): BB% 15.0% Second stint in AA (8/14 - 9/10): BB% 17.2% But, it was good to see that they did give Nick the high-leverage, "it's-the-playoffs-here's-the-ball-kid-it's-your-game-to-win" opportunity. And some of his other peripherals have improved incrementally or better after the call-up, like WHIP, strike % and GO/AO. (The WHIP has improved a lot since the call-up [1.36], but his combined stat of 1.65 is still in the bottom 9 of all Southern League pitchers with more than 43 IP). And as Seth also said, call-up or not, he's most likely going to throw some AFL innings regardless, which I think is going to be a great opportunity to get a few new sets of pitching coach/manager/peer eyes to help him with his overall pitching approach- while he goes up against some of the best AAA-AA free-swinging prospects in all of MiLB.
  12. Buck may, or may not, have much impact. But the alternatives to Buxton are demonstrably worse- or in the case of Kepler entirely untested. The ultimate benefit being that Buxton gets 200 more much-needed MLB PAs this year in preparation for next year.
  13. \ Except it's already been demonstrated over and over again on this thread and others, that there is plenty of flexibility without Robinson on the roster to get Buxton playing time almost every day of the week between giving days off to the other 3 OFers and Mauer.
  14. <1> The fact that he was called up, did a fine job in CF, and was learning on the job how to hit MLB breaking balls- his one and only impediment to MLB stardom. <2> Last time he dominated in the minors...? Gee, how about the month just before July? <3> And I don't think anyone has argued that he's going to be better than Hunter right off the bat. That's a "Look! Squirrel!" argument. <4> The rehab has evidently gone fine, he's 5-12, stolen a base, played CF flawlessly... OH! and the Twins FO has determined he's plenty healthy enough to remove him from his rehab assignment.
  15. I'd like to hear from just one person on the other side of this debate- who evidently all believe that the Twins are still in the thick of the playoff hunt- who can therefore logically defend starting Shane Robinson ANY days of the week... ???
  16. Precisely, by working on the exact thing he needs to master in order to become a perennial team leader as quickly as possible, yeah, it's very arguable that that is exactly what will give him the best chance to succeed.
  17. Yeah, and I suppose that's because the magic major league cruveball-hitting beans don't kick in until August 22nd?
  18. I don't think anyone disputes this, but taking him off rehab after 3 of the possible 20 days makes it look like it's probably not going to be a week or two.
  19. September means lots of inferior pitchers. Learning how to hit against those on rosters in August will be far more beneficial to his development. If he was still on his "rehab assignment" and if he was striking out 7 times in his first 15 PAs at Rochester, your argument about his injured wrist would hold more weight.
  20. That's correct, since the Twins have obviously chosen to change the focus on 2016, every move from this point forward should be all about that new focus. Buxton playing full-time at the MLB level should be one of the center-points of that new focus.
  21. Butera/Buxton Worst. Comp. Ever.
  22. It's perfectly defensible if there's an agenda to be met. If Buxton had struck out 7 times in his first 15 PAs in Rochester, I'd say your positioin would be more defensible. But he hasn't, so it's not. If the Twins really expect to be legit contenders in 2016, the sooner that Buck is fully acclimated to the big leagues, the better. And his developmental status right now suggests he wu=ill most benefit from maximizing his plate appearances against MLB pitchers.
  23. Except for the fact that Buxton in 11 games was already playing CF like a veteran... and already begining to look like he was turning the corner at the plate in his last 3 games (something that it took 3 seasons for Hicks to achieve) Buxton has much higher COMPETENCE coming into the majors which will naturally feed his confidence, Hicks had neither confidence or competence in his first 2 MLB seasons, thus the negative feedback loop he endured.
  24. Except if this were all true, there were plenty of other options that could have been deployed temporarily in CF before going to all the trouble of placing him onto the 40 man roster in June. No, it was the plan. Hicks messed up "the plan" by having a 2 fWAR month of July coming off of the DL.
  25. It seems pretty apparent... Gotta clear the decks for Hicks and Torii in CF and RF as the starters out of the chute in 2016. Extra year of team control for Buck
