  1. I don't think anyone disagrees with the bolded portion, it's how you get there, particularly with players like Hicks and Florimon, who have been historically as bad at the plate to begin their careers, particularly Hicks, as just about anyone who has ever played the game. Many of us see the need for Hicks to get some work at fixing his areas of deficency in AAA, a level that the Twins chose to skip for Hicks, but which it is now obvious that he clearly needed. There is a very real risk that Hicks never reaches his full potential precisely due to what he's been subjected to the last 14 months. It is nothing about the improvement of a replacement level player in his late 20s, it's all about developing, and at this point, possibly salvaging, the career of Aaron Hicks.
  2. Well-stated. You have to have 2 legit CF options at the major league level and at least 3 on the 40-man roster. They must not mind appearing to be laughingstocks by first, keeping Bartlett over acutal CFers....and now, throwing Hermann out there as #3 on the depth chart. Perhaps the Twin need look no further than the Texas Rangers, among their current 13-man DL list are two candidates. Engel Beltre is out of options, and is eligible to come off of the DL this Thursday. They also have 29-year old Joe Aducci, out with a broken finger, he's played quite a bit of CF in the minors.
  3. Did I miss something? Has anyone said Santana is a better option in CF? I'm not in the "Hate Hicks" camp, and it's clear that Hicks has to be with the Twins, at the very least, for the time being. The question on the table though: Is that what's best for Hicks and the Twins? The Twins are in such a desperate situation they are going to have Hermann taking reps in CF, perhaps as soon as tomorrow. And in the process, they are putting Santana's development on hold at SS, until Fuld, or some other option becomes available..... Perhaps the Twins need look no further than the Texas Rangers, Engel Beltre is out of options and is eligible to come off of the DL this Thursday. They also have Joe Aducci, also on the DL with a broken finger, who has played quite a bit in CF in the minors.
  4. I don't think anyone is disregarding him, per se, but Cuellar can't communicate with many players from the bullpen. And regarding Gardy and speaking from my own experience, managers and coaches have ways to communicate candidly with their coaches at a decibel level only audible with whom they intend to communicate.
  5. Why so uncomfortable? It's perfectly logical to expect that certain fractured Gardy idioms don't translate well, both with respect to another language and culture. 25% of the current 40-man roster is from the Carribean area- given the top prospects coming up through the ranks, that percentage is sure to inevitably rise. And with the potential egos in certain cases, it wouldn't hurt to have a mature Spanish voice at the ready, to make sure everyone is on the same page when strategic decisions are being made, and defuse any misunderstandings before someone goes all Kyle Lohse on the manager's door. Something bothered me a bit from this weekend's series. While the bullpen pitchers loved being able to sit in the dugout at AT&T, Gardy was bothered by it and preferred the phone system, supposedly because the RPs could hear what he was telling the bullpen coaches. Does that make any sense?
  6. Did you expect any different? Auto-default switch always goes to the vets. (Perhaps I can come up with a scenario that they are taking a closer look at Kubel on whether to fish or cut bait....every 30 days, he is entitled to another bonus...)
  7. Yep. We'll soon find out..and I wish it had been the Twins helping him make the decision going into spring training, and then working on the transition to all-right-side-hitting in March instead of May. And yesterday should have settled once and for all the Santana in CF experiment.
  8. I'm sure Profar is taking notice on his 60-day DL stint. He may be out of a job if Odor keeps on clicking. Just goes to show that there are teams willing to move their 20 year old hot prospects from AA and see what happens.
  9. No matter what the naysayers spout (and they've been more quiet of late), there are some very sharp minds that contribute on this site, owners and members alike, that continually seem to be a step or two ahead of the braintrust.
  10. Except, now it's even more learning on the job, leaning that might best be accomplished by a couple weeks in Rochester....I've gotta think there's going to be an adjustment period for facing RHPs from the right side of the plate. And Gardy "seemed geniunely surprised"? This is the right move, just seems the timing is off. What's the plan, Stan?
  11. The changes tell me that the club is looking for a possible Tom Kelly-esque exit for Gardy, handing off the righted ship, as it were, to Molitor. In the meantime, Gardy has been floating in la-la land with his choices for manning the outfield and SS. Not many organizations are willing to wait this long to pull the ripcord on Florimon and Hicks, let alone play 3 men at a time out of position in the outfield, especially the challenging AT&T Park outfield, as he did today.
  12. All fine and good...but Hermann in CF? Ever? I don't think so. And they were giving 3 major league players experience in the OF today, so they apparently were supposed to be also learning how to do it at the major league level.
  13. Yeah, I saw the presser, there was stunned silence when Gardy pronounced Hermann's well-earned promotion to #3 on the CF depth list- perhaps the media was waiting for a punch line? Gardy pretty much had a garbled response (something about having to do some things with the players he has) when asked what the deal was with the 3-infielder-in-the-outfield set-up against the Giants on Sunday.
  14. The best chance to win against the suddenly thunderous Ranger bats is with Hughes, only thing is, he goes up against Darvish. The Rangers Team BA over the last 8 games is .311 w/ an .871 OPS, and they were just crushing the likes of Verlander and Porcello. Arcia and Hammer better be ready to produce and re-energize this offense or this series might get ugly. And then Gardy's worst nightmare, playing in Yankee Stadium next weekend...followed by 2 in Milwaukee, just a little scary.
  15. FWIW...in the post-game presser, Reusse pressed Gardy on the OF situation, with particular emphasis on the status of Hicks. Gardy endorsed him, much as he did Florimon in ST, with a "he's my Center Fielder....we've got him working on the things he needs to do to be successful"...we'll see if that quickly changes when Fuld stops seeing double. And to add to the "Twins CF Men of Mystique and Mystery- 2014 Edition", Gardy also said that Chris Hermann was being sent down to get reps in Center Field...the press room went silent in stunnned amazement....that's right, folks, now #3 on your CF depth chart, just behind Hicks, and SS/Sorta CF Danny Santana, is now officially Chris Hermann. In looking at his vast experience at the position, I see all of 11 games there in 2010 at Ft Myers....this should work.....That's Entertainment!
  16. Dick: "Santana's got a great arm!" (throw is wide left of plate by 20 feet) Bert: "Nothing to see here..." [Meanwhile back to the action....Santana goes back and to his left around 140 feet to deep Triples Alley and traps a fly ball against his ear.... that Parmelee was about 100 feet closer to].
  17. lol...but seriously, he went into a snit last year when he wasn't given the choice of which game to pitch in a double-header, despite his seniority, so there's a fighting chance he gets a little sensitive to clown car OF alignments.
  18. Nahhh.....Just some "Veteran leadership" among all the Infielders in the OF.
  19. Except the Milwaukee mausoleum?
  20. If Cola was sticking around, wouldn't he be playing today against Bumgarner? As Hawk might say...."He gone" And probably for the best, Cola can find his stroke back where he found such great success as the IL MVP, he could be back when Willngham is moved.
  21. Or when Willingham is traded.
  22. One thing it tells me is that Dozier is becoming the go-to Twins guy for the media....the public face of the team....the new Cuddyer, as it were. And Plouffe is Option 1A, in that regard. And now they are the key anchors at the top of the lineup in the Twins batting order. Who ever could have imagined that that would be the case just one year ago today? Both players have had the switch flipped, Plouffe is a different player at the plate and in the field, while Dozier is moving to the elite level among all MLB 2nd Basemen. What's different from last year? Molitor (not to slight Bruno). To me though, this club is still one Spanish-speaking coach away from where they need to be, and soon, as an increasingly larger percentage of their key and developing players will be Latinos.
  23. In the race to the bottom, it looks like the Twins FO has the much higher pain threshold: Sizemore May BA .214 OPS: 570 Hicks May BA .184 OPS: .551 Kubel May BA .197 OPS: .507 Colabello May BA .125 OPS: .365
  24. 1) You're misstating what I said, I said "college mathematics", most college graduates can get a college degree with little or no math beyond a rehash of high school concepts ("rudimentary" indeed) and an introductory stats course. 2) Which is why you have to have a viable Plan A, C & D.....and you look for doing some of your snapping up in the offseason when there are many more options....and then you're not blindly and stubbornly only going with one of the most misguided "Plan B's" (Bartlett) in MLB history.
