  1. Well, actually, the Twins made their intentions regarding Hicks' positional future quite clear when they sent him on his rehab assignment. Rob Antony specifically said that Hicks would also be playing the other OF positions to get experience there, along with learning how to hit RHP while hitting RH (Hicks made sure that that experiment lasted all of about 15 minutes). It's time to face facts, the whole thing is a huge mess, and both sides of this issue have a hand in how it has all gone down. Right now, it looks like the Twins are sending a strong message to Hicks that they are considering his future role as a Twin as a 4th OF and are willing to jeopardize their current OF defense and their future SS position to make their point to Hicks clear.
  2. So Brian has time for something more to write about?
  3. Gardy seem to be consistent in posting his starting lineups at the last possible moment- meanwhile the Angels post theirs 5 hours early. Is that because there's no pressure from the Fantasy Leagues on the Twins due to lack of interest?
  4. Yeah, I'd say that while it's a nice honor, May would rather be in Gonzalez's shoes. Looks like the Twins PR department gets a nice bone thrown their way....and as others have written, it does now provide a "clear path" to the majors for May if the Twins decide to just keep him up.
  5. Classic StarTrib editing, dopey headline-writing and LaVelle proofreading (or lack thereof), how can you have this content sitting online for the last 3 hours???: http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/264626681.html#oQORs9AU5b5Dt2WJ.97
  6. Forget it, JB, it's TwinkieTown...
  7. Contrasting and comparing the two teams's promotional pitching philosophies is like comparing Mars to Venus. The names you mentioned as possibilities exemplify that fact. A guy like Angel Castro (age 31) would never have been moved off of the Twins 40-man in ST, and he'd be in the Twins rotation already (a la Pino).
  8. Do you mean Johnson...or Swarzak?
  9. Rogers is 1.8 years under the average age for AA- and the rate the Twins promote SPs, they probably consider him on the "young" side. He has been unlucky this year, but if the Twins are looking for consistency, he has now pitched 11 of his last 12 games at a Quality Start or better, and as you noted, has been getting much better, culminating into today's terrific performance. I think to make it in the majors, he's going to need to get that K% back up to where it was a couple years ago at Kentucky- and he's got a lot of arms blocking him at AAA and in the majors- plus Berrios and Wheeler at his heels- that he's going to have to flat-out outperform.
  10. Is the jury now in that Vielma is the second coming of Florimon?
  11. Yup, although there are conflicting news reports about Mauer- and his willingness in the past to play when at less than 100%. And by definition, the Twins don't have anything invested long-term in a one-year contract guy like Suzuki. Suzuki and the Twins both win on this type of deal, the Twins for the obvious reasons as previously noted, and for Zuke, he wants the every-day opportunity, and gets to prove to all comers in the offseason that he is healthy enough to be a productive asset as someone's potential full-time catcher.
  12. Except that they are terribly apt when you consider that the statement I responded to was the blanket statement about " all the young arms", not starters......And to pitching at "AAA", which was the "norm for the Cardinals", except in the cases I specifically outlined, when it clearly wasn't. And significant to note, Gonzalez is getting the call from AA, instead of the Cards' versions of Pino, Johnson, Darnell, Hernandez, DeVries, et al.
  13. Seth Maness, Trevor Rosenthal and Marco Gonzalez would beg to differ with your characterization..
  14. I guess Doogie Wolfson's source was a wee bit optimistic- when Doogie tweeted 10 days ago that Buxton was "very close to taking live BP". It looks like the Twins are being very, very cautious...and leaving a ? in the headline was wise, stringer. This obviously was a fairly serious, even if only nagging injury, and I don't like the equivocation about the dreaded "S" word: It's great that Terry Ryan is on the record and willing to finally put some optimistic news on the table, but talks of previously blown up timetables and the lack of a more adamant "NO" to the possibility of surgery means we all will have to keep our fingers crossed a little while longer. Buried inside on a bullet point (which shows those rules for All Star games and offseason leagues rosters are highly flexible):
  15. OK then, "Howeda, ye jest...."
  16. Isn't it even sketchier than that?...given the baseball situation in PR? It seems like Vargas was likely just a big, chubby kid who flashed a little power...and probably showing what he had in a semi-organized youth league?
  17. Would the Kevin Bacon treatment suffice? (see post # 22 above )
  18. Technically correct. I threw Vargas into the same boat with Sano and Kepler, they were all tricky/aggressive signings.
  19. Thank you sir....may I have another... [video=youtube;qdFLPn30dvQ]
  20. Yup. As others have pointed out in the past, it's far harder to find, and secure, legit talent down in the draft (Rosario in the 4th round, Dozier in the 8th round, Tonkin in the 30th round, AJ Achter, 46th round), or even harder, finding and securing unsigned/undrafted International FAs. Bill Smith in whole was a disaster as GM, but together with Sano and perhaps, Kepler, he did find some decent talent using methods besides first round cherry-picks.
  21. How valuable? I'm willing to pay cash money for my visit to Southern Cali next month...
  22. Great write-up, JC. Has to be a little bit of letdown for local fans after last season's success. What happened to JDs numbers in May- compared to last season? Perhaps there is more pitching help coming besides Burdi, in addition to the bats you mentioned? Is there a LH arm that has any projectability? And maybe Gordon gets hot in E-Town and gets an early call? But really, in the end result, it looks to me like there just aren't enough guys who project to climb much higher in the system.
