  1. Hard to blame Casey Fuld for being Fuld in that situation. I would have liked to have seen Gardy roll the dice and PH Casey Parmelee in that spot. That would have made for an adventurous OF in the bottom of the 9th.
  2. Josh Willingham pitched in, twice, on those Correia runs in the 5th.
  3. Yeah...I think the term we're looking for is "Correia-esque"
  4. Grady Sizemore was available to be claimed and/or signed on a non-roster minor league deal- he's right there in Lehigh Valley as we speak.
  5. Just tracking back to last weekend....Gardy begs and pleads to get an extra position player...and not to draw too fine a line here, but just for the sake of discussion....Ryan demurred, and is quoted (in an oh-so-passive-aggressive manner?) as saying he felt the Twins were adequately covered enough to not warrant risking losing someone off of the 40-man (I would assume, for Ron's "benefit", that he included Florimon in that explanation, too?)
  6. HBD nailed it.....Like I said yesterday...Ryan is making sure that Gardy owns this one for the time being.
  7. Hate to say "I told you so" but in this case...it was pretty obvious when the injury was described...it was not going to end up being "day to day"- but as you said, at least they didn't drag this out as they have in the past. Heck, even Timmy Laudner knew the injury was a more serious one than the first reports would lead to believe. This move still makes it likely that the Twins stay with 13 pitchers when Plouffe and Nunez presumably come back on Monday, obviously still a position player short on the 40-man, and still leaves them short a viable leadoff bat and a starting-level CF on the 25-man.
  8. OK, I'll take a stab at it: -1?
  9. Nunez started at SS for New Britain last night. He was 0-3. It sounds like if all goes well, he'll be back on Monday.
  10. But Burton's effectiveness is in dispute, in 2009, 2010 and 2011. It helps to add the full context to the numbers you cite. His velocity was at the lowest of his career in all three seasons. And- his velocity actually dropped 2.2 MPH from 2007 to 2009 (93.2 vs. 91.0), what you failed to mention, Burton pitched hurt most of 2009 and made multiple trips to the DL- and he ended up with the worst year of his career to that point in time. And you're comparing a lousy year in 2009 when he was pitching hurt, with a lousy year in 2014 when he's supposedly healthy. And he was hurt for all but but 3 innings in 2010 and 4 innings in 2011- his velo was at the low point of his career, but I'm not sure why would you even use those years as examples of anything. He regained his full health in his first year with the Twins in 2012 at age 30/31 ...and his velocity returned to at, or near, career-bests in 3 pitches (92.6 on his 4-seam FB, and career highs in velocity on his 2-seam FB- 93.0 and also on his CB- 92.9) His velocity dropped in 2013 at age 31/32, and his hit-ability and wildness increased. His velocity further dropped in 2014 at age 32/33- to levels similar to his previous- mentioned lousy, but unhealthy year of 2009, and his strikeouts have also dropped, along with increased hit-ability and wildness. These numbers confirm the trends cited for all pitchers in the aggregate.
  11. Since 5.5 is the current AL average for over-30 pitchers, that would be a much better number and hopefully, we'd also match most of the AL and have 2-3 solid, contributing arms under 25, as well. But that will mean a lot of guys are going to get run off of the club, which is not usually the Twins MO. I just wish that they had paid more attention to the data before they let the situation get to this point.
  12. "Let's do things the way we've always done them" is not a good defense for this organization. If Berrios can prove he can pitch in the majors at 21, why hold him back?
  13. Burton's pitches are all off 1 to 1.5 MPH., which fits right into the aggregate pitcher age curve for declining velocity (with the commensurate drop in Burton's K/9 and increase in BB/9). http://cdn.fangraphs.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Pitcher_Curves_Relievers.png
  14. Correia yes, but how can you be sure that both Burt-ie and Guerrier will be gone? With the four definite 30+ returnees you mentioned above, plus one of the above....that's 5.... And what about Deduno, Pino and Pelfrey, Johnson.... with Swarzak turning 30 in September, 2015? It's easy to see at least Pelfrey and Swarzak, plus one more of them to get a shot at a roster spot... that makes 8 over/at 30. It still looks like the Twins will have the oldest staff in baseball...and as I noted, Perkins FB velo has fallen by 2 MPH, Swarzak's K% has fallen from 17.8% to 12.1%, Duensing's K/9 has utterly collapsed from 8.26 to 4.83 while his BB% has upticked, right on schedule.... the aging curve will still be working against the lot of them. The most likely youth additions look to only being May and Tonkin, with Meyer/Darnell/Achter/Oliveros waiting for an opportunity in Roc.
  15. Yeoman duty, well said. Hopefully, some of this sinks in to the doubters. I think bringing up Rivera as one's "proof" is instead, rather the exception that proves the rule. I'm not sure why it's so difficult to understand that for every Rivera, there lies the hundreds of ticking time bombs in the likes of Jose Valverde, Matt Guerrier and Jared Burton.
  16. And he muffed the pop fly. He really should be DFAd tonight, with another player added to cover 3rd until Plouffe is back. The Twins margin for error was thin enough before Santana went down, they really can't afford to have an automatic out, who now has a somewhat suspect glove, as well.
  17. FWIW, Tim Laudner on the postgame show said the Santana injury "doesn't sound good". And then there's this: Mike Berardino‏@MikeBerardino DL hasn't been ruled out for Danny Santana, Gardy said. Didn't think he was moving around very well today when he jogged briefly.
  18. So.....it's NOT what they're saying, then?
  19. Are we sure about that? A bone bruise can be fairly serious: http://www.tsaog.com/connect-learn-interact/blog/blog/2013/03/06/dr.-marvin-brown-on-why-bone-bruise-is-a-misnomer
  20. Huh? Is that what I said.....? <I don't think sooo>
  21. Not if he's going to start the Futures Game.
  22. Gardy exactly one hour behind Scioscia in getting his lineup posted today. (But...he did have a little set of distractions today )
  23. I'd settle for a tough decision to continue to justify keeping P-Flo on the 40-man.
  24. Pressly was a Rule 5. Facts ain't bellyaching. As the chart indicates, age is a critical component for maximizing pitcher value. PItching, not hitting is 70% of the game- the Twins bought some improvement, but they're still the worst SP staff in MLB in ERA and K%/K/9 (not counting the elevation-challenged Rockies in ERA), so it isn't just the back of the bullpen.... the Twins aren't getting young arms up and producing at a young, pre-prime age- to max out on their prime years, while they are still cost-controlled. The rest of the AL, contenders and non-contenders alike, averages 2.71 pitchers 25 and under because they understand this.
