  1. Which "both"?
  2. The Twins have never acknowledged that they were in rebuild mode or win-now mode, by default then, they've chosen a "muddling" middle ground mode.
  3. I'm wondering where your evidence is that May does not stand out above the others? It's pretty well-known that May is the 2nd best pitching prospect in AAA, and the best performer in Rochester. He has the lowest FIP @ 2,99, and unllike Pino (FIP 3.71), he isn't relying on impossible-to-maintain Strand (92%) and BABIP (.222) rates to support his low ERA. Do we even have to mention that May's stuff should obviously translate better to the majors than Pino? If the opposite were true, wouldn't Pino have stuck with one of his many previous teams as a viable prospect, and been called up to the majors by one of those numerous previous teams before he reached the age of 30?
  4. You don't think it was a good idea to call up Gonzales, but the Cardinals do think it was a good idea. I'm going to go with the appeal to proven successful track record and authority on this one.
  5. In my mind, the chance for "success (and capacity to help the team now)" of anyone else they are using in that #5 spot is actually much less than May's "forgone conclusion hardliness", at the start, middle or finish of their tenure with the Twins. Again, your best prospects have to start getting major league experience, somewhere, at some point in time. May is soon 25, it would be nice for him to get established in the majors, at some point, before he begins his physical decline phase- which draws ever closer. They need look no further than to the guy they delayed calling up last year, and then "failed" when he was finally called up- referring to Kyle Gibson of course.
  6. Any word on how close Hurlbut and Lee are to getting back on the mound? Berrios is also ready to move.
  7. Both Deduno and Pino are 30+ journeyman with sketchy histories, and with very fringy potential for long-term success. There's a reason that Pino has toiled at AA and AAA over 8 different seasons and 5 different clubs (the Twins twice) without getting a call-up. They both are at times effective and other times erratic...and seem best-suited to offer depth at the end of the bullpen and starting pitcher options for the Twins, as well as pitching at AAA.
  8. I don't detect anyone on here "freaking out". Instead, just "pointing out" that that's not how other teams do it. A big deal was made by Terry Ryan a few weeks ago, in his "why not us?" comment in regards to the Morales signing. Since then, the team has done practically nothing to follow up with that aggressive move- and their moves of late have been down-right head-scratching. Sure, we'd all like to see him pitch his one inning in the Futures Game. But.....I would have liked to have seen him start his career at home on June 19 against the White Sox for 7 innings. As great as the Pino story was that night, a team that's in it to win it brings up their best chances for doing just that. We tend to revisit old history on TD and are quick to point out Gibson being terrible in 2013- and not noting that his post-TJ arm strength was likely tapped out by the time he got the call. Of course, this oversimplified bromide also leaves out the basic fact that, that very spell of terrible-ness is instrumental in many, if not most, prospects, in becoming competent and productive major leaguers. Will May be an immediate impact player or struggle as Gibson did? There's but one way to find out, and calling up May in this situation is actually a win-win proposition long-term, for both May and the Twins.
  9. As far as the Futures Game goes....The Cardinals didn't see the need for a tune-up for Marco Gonzalez, coming up from AA. The Red Sox didn't see the need for a tune-up for Mookie Betts. May is now the second oldest player on either team in the Futures Game. He is likely to pitch one inning in that game- I'll need to be educated on the importance of that one inning other than financial considerations. It's hard to grasp any other reason for how the best performing, in 2014, long-term legitimate prospect on the Twins was given short-shrift versus not one, but two, non-prospect journeyman arms, and one, lesser prospect....except that there are obviously "other considerations" involved... Lest we forget, there were reasons on all three teams- Twins Cards, Red Sox, for the best prospects to come up to meet specific needs, for at least a tryout....the Twins "other considerations", as it turned out, were of such a different nature, that the Cards and Red Sox decided not to consider them.
  10. So the Futures Game is more of a concern to the Twins than May pitching in place of Pino on Monday, or next Saturday, or July 10. (At more than one point in time on TD, there was scoffing and scolding on this site when it was suggested that the Twins might withhold May until after the Futures Game).
  11. Chris Fee ‏@CJFee 2m Trevor May to the DL with a right calf strain. Retroactive to 6/26. Unbelievable.

  13. Our guy has been around for so long, it's really getting much too easy to make a call:
  14. The good thing about the AFL as an additional option for offseason play is that Sano would get quality at-bats against the best pitching prospects, while the Twins would have more direct say and control about where, and how much, Sano plays.
  15. Oh yeah..... it was the logical, and very telling, move (the other logical move was to PH Parm for Fuld, I still don't get that one). I wonder if it was telling enough to earn Polanco a starting spot today? It could probably be rationalized that it's not fair to put the kid in against Darvish, but come on.... Florimon looks as totally lost at the plate as Hicks did in April, 2013, probably worse.
  16. Yep, and not for the first time. C'mon guys, how hard is it to get this stuff right, especially when you have direct access to the Twins' press secretary and stat services?
  17. There were already rumors out there since ST that the AFL might be an option, if things progressed well. I don't think anyone has said anything about him playing next week, or anytime very soon. You have to walk before you can crawl. But, more importantly, Klaw and others have speculated recently that he, indeed, might be ready for the AFL. Earlier this month, LEN3 was quoted in this report on how Sano was progressing: The difference now, is that Terry Ryan is forthcoming in attaching his name towards specific progress landmarks for Sano.
  18. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Tt8EOGNHFI/UugHpWd7XnI/AAAAAAAAFKI/3IZs1EgygKA/s1600/Miguel+Sano+Byron+Buxton+TwinsFest.jpg LEN3 got some good news from Terry Ryan, in classic cheshire cat TR style http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/265009681.html#bBtpY2sCSHmxPhwJ.97 : He only "thought" that Buxton took BP?....uhh, riiight.... So it appears that, finally, Buxton is close to taking live BP. [My source in Ft Myers was at the rained-out game on Thursday and said he saw no sign of either Buxton or Sano approximately 1.5 hours before game time.] Mike Berardino took his turn at quizzing Ryan on Friday evening, as well, and got this additional nugget of good news http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/06/27/twinsights-miguel-sano-could-soon-be-swinging-a-bat/: Our long Twins nightmare may soon be over.
  19. What's with all this complaining about lack of depth in CF? (Florimon has one minor league GAME played in CF....Parmelee has one major league INNING in CF...options, I tell ya!)
  20. The Cardinals started yet another 22-year-old this evening against the Dodgers. Carlos Martinez had been a starter throughout his minor league career after signing as an undrafted FA from Puerto Rico in 2009. Martinez made one major league start out of 21 appearances in 2013, after being called up after 13 starts in AAA. Tonight's start for the Cards was his first in 2014- after 32 relief appearances. The Cardinals are showing the way as to how you rebuild, er...check that...skip the rebuild and instead, reload your pitching staff with a string of young arms at the ready when injuries or ineffectiveness forces the issue.
  21. Josh helped out in the 5th.
  22. Yesterday.
  23. Great, thorough report Steve, on a very busy day. Just one minor quibble:
  24. Kyle Gibson gained valuable experience from pitching last year (and might have gained more if he had been called up when his arm was still fresh). As far as your being mystified....refer back to the pitcher aging curve chart. Playing the odds is only the most logical, and cost-effective thing to do here- it's how you better position yourself to have sufficient young, fresh and effective arms in their prime when all the young position players are established and ready to make their mark in the majors. It's not at all unreasonable to suggest that it's time to at least make a move to league average in pitcher age.... and make the move on from at least some of the guys who clearly aren't part of the future, and give a few looks at the guys, a la Gibson last year, who have a good chance to become a part of the future.
