  1. And Buxton finishes the evening with a league-leading 7th triple, double and single (plus a stolen base- 10th on the season), in 5 ABs.... as I said, I think he'll be just fine.
  2. Take your pick, plenty to choose from. I may have missed something because I haven't seen it in this conversation, but when is Fien expected to be ready to return?
  3. Exactly, he's pretty much in a 5-day (6 games) slump, during which, his BABIP is .048. And his K% is at 14%, well down from his season average. His contact rate is way up this month, as Kab21 states, this appears to be pretty much an ordinary slump, my guess is:he will be just fine.
  4. I would hope they have no intentions of leaving Bernier on the 40-man for very much longer.
  5. Are you including their infielders who primarily play OF?
  6. This sounds mostly about right, but..... I'm not sure, but isn't Bernier eligible for free agency as a Rule 55 guy if he's released and no one claims him?
  7. Byron Buxton is in a bad-BABIP-related, 2-25 week in 6 games in Birmingham this week, but Jorge Polanco and Miguel Sano are continuing their May Southern League dominance, helping to lead visiting Chattanooga to taking 5 out of 6 games against the Barons. Batting third in the lineup, Sano hit 2 HR tonight, plus a single, including the eventual 2-run game-winner in the top of the 10th. This gives him 4 HR in May, and 8 on the year. For the month, Sano is now hitting .315 with a 1.005 OPS, helping to render his feeble April line of .159 BA/.684 OPS as an increasingly distant memory. With hot-hitting Kepler, Harrison and Walker behind him and Buxton and Polanco directly in front him, look for Sano to extend this offensive breakout. Speaking of Polanco, he is now back in the 2-hole in the batting order, tonight getting 3 hits, 2 runs scored and his second SB of the week (7 on the season). For the month of May, Polanco is now batting .365 with an OPS of .923.
  8. Couldn't disagree with this conclusion more. Most of these guys have just been promoted to a new, and often significant jump in competitive level and are playing in situations where they may be as many as 3 years younger than the average age in their new leagues. At least two of the top prospects had completely lost seasons in 2014. Today is May 15, just about halfway through the month, certainly 14 games or so of significantly improved production is a good (but by no means, perfect) indicator that proper adjustments are being made, and that the top prospects are likely resuming their expected/hoped-for minor league development arcs. I think it's especially worthwhile to pay close attention at AA level in particular, as sustained superior production there can offer a quick ticket to the major leagues.
  9. DH insurance 1B insurance 3B insurance Both @ AAA and AA level when the inevitable promotions/demotions come.
  10. I saw Buxton play on Sunday and recorded my impression Here. Buxton worked a walk and was hit by a pitch in the back. In addition, he also singled sharply twice, grounded out hard to SS and struck out. To put his day into full perspective, he was batting in front of Steven Wickens and not Jorge Polanco, so he may not have been getting many pitches to hit. In his last 15 games, and 70 PAs, he's been swinging more, but also slightly dropped his K% (from 19.5% to 18.6%), but also meanwhile, cutting his BB% dramatically, from 11.7%% to 4.3%. During this same time frame, his BABIP has jumped, but only from .255 to .294, while his OPS has gone from .665 to .856. His LD% has jumped from 17.5% to 20.4%, while his OFB% has jumped from 28.1% to 34.7%. Suffice to say, he's seeing and hitting the ball a lot better, probably getting more, and better, pitches to hit (58.8% strikes in April vs. 65.5% strikes in May), but most importantly, he's successfully shaking the rust and making the adjustments to AA pitching and parks (Zone Contact is 91.2% in May vs only 77.2% in April). I think he will be just fine going forward.
  11. Generally agreed, and given his work ethic, he's even more athletic than I'd imagined. But yes, he does have a fatal flaw in his make-up. I'd still give his chances on being a productive major league regular at less than 1 in 4, but at least for one day, I didn't see any signs of an all-or-none guy last Sunday,
  12. After seeing both in person for the first time on Sunday, I have to say I was both impressed and pleasantly surprised. The ball was exploding off of Walker's bat- to all fields, and Kepler was effortlessly hitting ropes all over the field (he ended up with 3 hits, 2 doubles- which should have been 3 doubles if not for a great defensive play). Kepler looks like he could eventually adjust his swing to produce more power, while Walker appeared to be actively adjusting his swing situationally to hit line drives as well as fly balls.
  13. Except home run derby players don't generally hit the majority of their homers to the opposite field. FWIW, after seeing Walker hit a massive opposite field home run on Sunday, plus stinging three line drives, in 5 good plate appearances with no strikeouts or swing-for-the-fences whiffs, I'd say he's working hard on removing the label you've given him.
  14. With Thorpe out for at least a year and possibly irreparably harmed and Gonsalves rocking and rolling in the Rapids, shouldn't Thorpe's status be either "Down" or "Uncertain"... and shouldn't Gonsalves' status be either "Way Up" or "Ballooning?"
  15. Yeah, the injury to JD Martinez sure helped to crush any chances for the Tigers. The dude is killing the Twins this year with an 1.181 OPS and 211 OPS+ (and was 2-2 when he left the game). On the matter of the other Martinez, I'm not sure why VMart isn't on the DL- he looks really injured. Ausmus would have been much better off moving JD and Cespedes up in the order. Cespedes has always killed the Twins, as well (1.051 OPS 179 OPS+ in 2015... 1.065 OPS 169 OPS+ for his career).
  16. I think Buxton might have taken the fibula break over three wrist injuries, a concussion and a surgically repaired finger.
  17. Gardenhire effectively threw Molitor under the bus in his postgame comments, without calling him out by name, on more than one occasion last season when the employment of the shift resulted in a run scored against the Twins.
  18. Open letter to Kyle Gibson Dear Kyle- Tonight you made living proof that when it comes to baseball, oft-times it's better to be lucky than good.... because you weren't just lucky or good this evening, you were awesome. And you threw so well late in your appearance, while your defense rose to the challenge to have your back early on, that I don't even mind that the team came up on the short end for the night. From 6 Ks & 0 BBs, to that incredibly athletic completion of the 3-6-1 DP in the 5th to somehow nipping Gose at 1B, to ultimately watching that sinker and that change up dance, dazzle and deny Detroit hitters in the 6th and 7th innings, including striking out 5 of the last 6 hitters, this might have been the most memorable non-Hughes performance by a Twins starter in many years. More of these kind of games and we can just delete this thread completely. Just Jokin
  19. Thanks for posting the photo, JC. It reminded me that I had forgotten to announce that I added a series of Game Day Photos to my opening post from the Twins official photographer, who just happened to be in attendance on Sunday. Worth a second look back at Post #1 and also at his official website. Regarding the splits, yep, definitely might shed some light. Here's what the key hitters have done in the month of May, 9 out of 10 games were played at home: Buxton- BA .326 OPS 1.031 Polanco- BA .419 OPS 1.117 Sano- BA .306 OPS .920 Harrison- BA .310 OPS 1.014 Walker- BA .275 OPS .943 Kepler- BA .314 OPS .808 Turner- BA .250 OPS .858 Meneses- BA .353 OPS .860 Hard to beat a team with 8 guys in the lineup raking at these levels.
  20. 21 strikes, 19 balls, 2 doubles and a walk- 40 pitches in two innings of work on Sunday, at the tail end of mopping up a 16-3 blowout. I think there's a good chance the fix is going to take a little while longer.
  21. There's a small section in the RF power alley where the fence is only one-tier billboard-level high (that's where Walker's HR left the park). There is a clear yellow line painted atop the fence demarcating home run from in-play.
  22. Finally... Hicksie in CF and batting 8th in front of Santana.
  23. All of the 7:00 ET MLB lineups are posted on Rotoworld except for Mollie's. Waiting on Hicks?
  24. Reed does appear to have righted the ship. But Burdi's season stats and my own observations of his pitching on Sunday suggest that he hasn't come very close yet in turning the corner.
