  1. Concur, except they should have had him in the major league pen after ST 2014.
  2. No doubt a reasonable conclusion. It still is strange how far his stock dropped, and with all of this dirty laundry attached to it.... it seems there were also questions about emotional maturity thrown in the mix, as well.
  3. What makes you think the absolute least innovative team in baseball would be the first to go this radical?
  4. I get the promotions via the Twins usual way of doing business. Batts has seniority on Gonsalves and turns 24 in 1.5 months, Hurlbut is 24.5, that plus his 2 appearances trumps Hu. Duffey has seniority and was next in line to go up to AAA. But it certainly belies past supposed importance about sticking around for the first half ASG in their leagues., or the promised pretense of performance-based promotions. And once again, clearly the best major league prospects, Gonsalves, Hu and Berrios have to wait their turns. Disappointing news, hopefully for just the very short-term.
  5. Uhh, ask Terry? Or, his agent was still convinced he could get someone to sign him as a SP? But seriously, was TR even actively competing with anyone for Stauffer's services?
  6. Two words (well actually, names) Thielbar... Duensing... Gilmartin was determined to be expendable, and offering less potential than Ryan O'Rourke????, as the only legitimate LHRP challenger to the above two guys. They really didn't/still don't have anybody else AA or higher to consider. The above two guys were already showing signs of failing in 2014, while Gilmartin dominated against LH hitters at both AA and AAA. Granted, none of the options are sure things/great shakes, but protecting Gilmartin at someone else's expense (Kepler?, another pitcher?) was a decision they publicly agonized over on Rule 5 draft day when Gilmartin ended up getting claimed. Still a headscratcher.
  7. But that's the point, those with inside information should know more than just the stats at hand- and in truth, the Twins should have been quite pleased with the Gilmartin results for 2014. Pretty apparent that another successful franchise has taken advantage of the Twins'doubts about him. And the Twins also get a failing grade in assessment, in that LH guys they protected with the "good stats", like Darnell and Wheeler, have taken HUGE steps backwards in 2015.
  8. Thanks JC. Yeah, us guys far removed from the situation can only go by the bits and pieces parceled out to project a personality profile. I would guess the general assumption about Gonsalves is: a talented but a bit highstrung, flighty, but competitive personality, with some childhood mistakes overhanging from his past, which taken as a whole, seemed to play at least some role in causing his draft status to drop precipitously. Assuming that at least some of that perception is/was true, I like the Twins taking the gamble, and maybe perhaps, correctly assessing the potential for a good outcome on the maturity issue. Your comments on recent developments tend to confirm that assessment. I'm getting more on board this train, even more than before (although it seems that's likely to soon suck for you guys down in Cedar Rapids....)
  9. Uhh, you did?
  10. Funny, I'm more like "resigned to the inevitable"...
  11. Although I grant he's no panacea, I still don't get the thinking in not protecting Gilmartin over some other suspect lefties on the 40-man roster.
  12. I asked earlier JC... is there any indication on how Gonsalves has developed, regarding his own personal maturity issues?
  13. Actually, it's pretty simple. Promote and play players who have superior talent/performance history, bite the bullet and demote/trade/DFA when you make a mistaken judgement on non-performing personnel.
  14. How do you come to your conclusions? See Gray, Jeff... Deduno, Samuel... Roenicke, Josh... Guerrier, Matt (2014)
  15. the Twins "Seem to be hiding" Graham? Up until quite recently, there were more confirmed sightings of Amelia Earhart, the kidnapped Lindbergh baby- and Elivs... combined... than had seen JR.
  16. I've used that metaphor for the pen once already, today.... except my RP time bombs were fuse-activated- some have already blown up, some are on short fuse burns, others a little longer burning.... but they all pretty much have shown they can blow up at some point this season.
  17. Actually, it gets worse, the longer he sticks around: That's why I never understood all the talk about Stauffer being in the SP mix. He was specifically brought in to take Burton's role in the pen, even though he's only been a low leverage RP. He's at 8 appearances so far... if he somehow miraculously hits all of his performance milestones, he could make $3.95M. Just going from 8 to 24 games gets him to $3.25M. The Twins have a history of obliging players and their bonuses, regardless of performance level. Why did I get the feeling that Oliveros shouldn't be allowed free access in any tall buildings?
  18. So this was the "magical mystery move" that so many eagerly awaited and anticipated and wrote breathlessly about last Sunday?
  19. Yep, I get all of that. And on a losing team with no expectations, like Texas with DeShields, it makes a lot of sense, but on a winning team or a surprise team like the Twins, it makes a lot more sense to complete a trade with the Braves to have the freedom to use Graham however they choose. This bullpen is shaky enough already, to not have self-imposed limits on any arm.
  20. I like Graham alot. But to this point, Molitor has shown zero confidence in JR, and there hasn't been a recent appearance to suggest new-found confidence, and likely has been protecting Graham from having his own confidence shattered. In truth, Molitor had no one else to turn to for a multiple inning outing once he opted for Graham over Perkins.
  21. I can see the headlines now... Molitor uses up his prime bullpen guys- who were mostly ineffective, leaving him left with the two guys who are Really Struggling, and then later admitting that he had had some difficulty in adapting to National League rules and style of play, because in truth, he's "Paul Molitor... 'Intuitive' Savant!", who "knew" he was going to get lights out pitching late, and a home run from the guy who has gone nearly half a season without a long ball... Nawww... I'll stick with "lucky" and I'd bet if you actually asked Paul himself, he'd agree with that.
  22. Yep, used the entire pen. Watching the game, with the day off on Monday, and then again today, we were figuring that Hughes, or more likely May, were going to be called upon for long relief after Perkins pitched the 9th and/or 10th. Molitor had shown no confidence in Graham or Duensing recently, and for good reason.
  23. Sounds about right, but I can't recall having a guy that has put up these type of numbers at A ball. Berrios had 19 starts before being promoted, and his numbers were quite pedestrian compared to Gonsalves' incredible production. Perhaps Steve Buhr can answer this question best, but I am also wondering if Gonsalves is demonstrating new personal maturity to go along with his maturity on the mound? It seems that answering that question in the positive may also have a bearing on his timetable.
  24. Let's just say it. The bench left bereft of a power bat that can get you a big hit to help end the game, 4 shutout innings from the two guys in your pen who have recently demonstrated in technicolor that they can't get anybody out, and then getting a home run from the guy you least expect it who is not named Doug Bernier.... the win last night will probably be the luckiest W of the season.
