  1. Fact: The Twins in recent years are different about promotions than many other clubs, particularly pitchers- there has been a strong tendency to readily bring up scores of guys with virtually no long-term future as a major league pitcher, and slow-play their top prospects. Fact: Hu and Gonsalves had better numbers but were by-passed in favor of pitchers with more seniority. One such pitcher was shelled in his first AA appearance this week, just days after Hu had a strong performance in a spot start in AAA. Fact: Now that KLaw is on board, it's fairly universally recognized among the rating experts that Berrios is a top-flite prospect, with a potential elite ceiling and armed with at least two plus-pitches, possibly four. The same can in no way be said is the case for the person promoted to AAA in his place- Duffey is a much lesser prospect, who is simply "taking his turn" up to AAA in the Twins promotion process. Fact: The Twins management has a history of coming up with one novel reason and then yet another new and iimproved reason for slow-playing pitching prospect promotions.
  2. Just another "Excuse of the Week"
  3. A week ago on Sunday, Antony admitted that Sano had not even begun throwing in the OF, and just shagging pre-game flies isn't going to be enough to hit the ground running in the majors as a starting corner OF.
  4. Yes, this has been a major blind spot in the past. And possibly more days of reckoning are coming later this season and definitely again next offseason. The Twins need to look at some 2-for-1 deals to clear some roster room if they have such a hard time parting with mediocre roster-spot-holders.
  5. I think this point is moot, as Gardy had previously demonstrated strong loyalty, in that he would not allow his inner circle of coaches/bowling buddies to be fired, unless he was first let go. After much discussion during today's game (and while noting that Nolasco's off-speed stuff is now dancing for the second game in a row, as it once did before 2014), the consensus was that the Twins should have raided the Rays a second time and gotten Neal Allen, after Glynn's first year with the organization in 2012, and then subsequently gone full-rebuild, they brought Bruno up in 2013, he probably should have been joined on the coaching staff by Glynn and Allen, with Molitor as the manager.
  6. Hicks won't be arb-eligible until 2017, but he seems destined to be the Twins 4th OF or as trade-bait throw-in material if he can show a little better bat.
  7. We're #27... we're #27! (for May) Of course, the Twins were also #27 last August. And were only #30 in April in 2014- with respect to individual month results, but still ended up being #30. Good chance they'll still be #30 in 2015. (Meyer in the pen would help put a dent in that deficit relative to the rest of the league).
  8. Of course.. everyone off the ledge now?
  9. I"d mind it a loss less if they actually release one of the other older corners now and if Wheeler had at least one option remaining. If Sano and Kepler have another month in June like they're having in May (Sano .304 BA/.907 OPS ... Kepler .397 BA/1.068 OPS), can we assume that the Twins will have no hesitation in moving them up? That AAA experience is like finishing school, even for a short stint, it should be beneficial in making the final jump.
  10. Results might have been different for Meyer, with a better developmental/implementation plan (like sending him to the pen first, SP second, right after ST 2014).... in the meantime, there is a lost opportunity cost and a timing cost with respect to maximizing Span's value with respect to return on investment to the team, it's more than just 4-5 wins per year.
  11. Meyer had actually only completed A+ ball at the time of the trade, this was a very risky deal, and a little one-sided towards the Nats who were getting pretty much a sure thing, Span's concussion issues notwithstanding. I recall that I was pretty concerned that the Twins, who at the time were desperately in need of immediate help in the SP department, insist on a serviceable SP from the Nats as part of the deal. I also posted Dave Cameron's negative review of the trade. with respect to the risk involved with Meyer. Terry Ryan simply said something to the effect that "this was the cost and risk in trying to acquire a top-end SP." I still like Meyer a lot, but I'm not sure how anyone can say that this deal has not been a huge win for the Nats, thus far.
  12. My bad, Ryan Wheeler....
  13. I like actors who speak memorable lines in films (I just enclosed the link to the To Live and Die... clip). I especially like athletes who shut up and let their bats do their memorable talking for them.
  14. Speak for yourself.
  15. All wise counsel, but like many others who have seen him pitch, trust me when I say this guy is a special talent, a talent that doesn't come around every day. There's no one in the system with his ceiling.
  16. Your first conclusion is quite logical, but if the end result is Jon Rauch, this trade could only be regarded as disastrous, thanfully, it's far too soon to take this assumption as the end-case conclusion.... as Twinsnorth states above, this is a bump in the road, it might go on for a few months or a few years, but he'll start eventually, hope it's for the Twins.
  17. 100% with you on Meyer, whatever the message/approach is/has been, it's not working. Seth seems to think they are adequately covered at the corner IF spots (to the point that Kepler and Sano shouldn't be promoted- not seeing how that's true, just how much does Ryan Walker add to the equation? He seems more like a promotion blocker at this point ), and Bernier and Beresford seem to be solid up the middle. Rosario and Hicks and Ortiz were probably fine in the OF.
  18. The big part of this indictment is that the Twins in recent years have always been willing to pursue very tall pitchers, but to this point, have had very little to show for it. On the RP vs. SP debate, I would argue that Meyer is a special case, and probably would have benefited by reversing the procedure and starting him in the pen in 2014- with the hopes and expectations of transitioning him to an eventual starting role, as they have done successfully in St Louis
  19. Yep. That's exactly who I think is going to supplant the 13th pitcher.... which creates yet another roster crunch in Rochester. It seems more guys are going to have a meeting with the axe, or we are heading into a full-fledged "blocking" topic in the month of June.
  20. I'm searching for likely names. I'm assuming that Pinto eventually would exchange places with Hermann, after that... Rosario? But that presumably would be Schafer that supplants him.... Any others I've overlooked?
  21. John Turturro plays a nasty character by the name of "Carl Cody" in an underrated 80s Friedkin shoot-em-up, "To Live and Die in LA". Among his best lines in the movie, and there are a lot of them, is when Cody ominously taps the plate glass window and tells his crime boss, "Masters" (Willem Dafoe)- "Hey, don't forget about me." http://www.metacafe.com/watch/mv-XUwa/to_live_and_die_in_l_a_film_prison_visit/ Well, Vargas has already "tapped" out two HRs in the first two innings of today's first game of a DH in Norfolk, VA. I like the way Kennys is letting his bat do the talking, I think he got the message about saving his power displays for the games and not the BP session. Very encouraging so far.
  22. OK, then let's work backwards from the other direction, with Peterson cut, should Vargas be recalled in the short-term (and since he's already hit 2 HR in his first two ABs today, I think he's making the case for a short-term assignment), who is the most likely to get the call to Rochester when Vargas is recalled.... Gonzalez or Rodriguez? ("good soldier award")
  23. Doesn't this eventually make room for Kepler or Sano, should Vargas be recalled by the Twins in the short-to-intermediate-term?
  24. Actually, he was pretty dominant for most of last season in Rochester, and he was on a very strict pitch count.
  25. Hurlbut has that spot.
