  1. I think some of the early Bill James derivatives, like Runs Created, are close to what you are talking about. Here is the formula explained (and yes it is a pain to calculate. but) Baseball reference has is both as total (RC) and per game (RC/G). Here are the 2012 Twins' numbers at BR. There are other similar stats, but I like RC for some reason. About Pavano (and the rest of the pitchers ) the ERA is actually there just for looks. I think that it is practically meaningless. BTW one of Nishioka's errors in Cleveland was called a hit today, so Duensing has added to his ERA. Makes really no sense to use for predicting performance or even describing how well he pitched. I had made the post prior to skimming your article for the segment on PE and xPE and saw ERA is not included. I'm not a fan of BABIP since luck is really a strange thing to measure. I meant adding the stolen bases in the TB in Slug where you could later factor that into OPS. After re-reading it, I screwed up a little on the explanation. It would look like (OBP+((TB+SB)/ABs)) which is easily calculable. Maybe I made something new there I don't know. Thanks for the insight on Runs Created which I'll look at as well.
  2. How so? Diamond and Deduno have been more effective than Devries. The 3rd best starter on a rotation like this is nothing to be proud of. Devries did better than expected and his dream came true this season. I'm happy for him and that's cool. The Twins aren't a miracle network (unlike their High A affiliate) for players who won't cut it at the professional level, however. If the Twins were to trot out the same guys as they did this year, it would be a disaster. Devries is an extremely risky low ceiling player who has pitched inconsistently for 60 Innings. I hope you don't think Walters should get a shot as well. I for one would like to see some free agents on the team for 2013. Not AAA players. I'm not even sold on Deduno right now. Here is my ranking of the Twins' rotation this season. And I am including only pitchers who are currently wearing a Twins uniform. De Vries' numbers do not include today's start (so they might go down a bit) and Duensing's and Swarzak's include their numbers only as starters this season: Diamond: 2.97 ERA, 1.187 WHIP, 5.0 K/9, 3.78 K/BB (.295 BABIP) - 16.2 xPE De Vries: 4.77 ERA, 1.210 WHIP, 6.3 K/9, 3.50 K/BB (.254 BABIP) - 16 xPE Pavano: 6.00 ERA, 1.397 WHIP, 4.7 K/9, 4.13 K/BB (.330 BABIP) - 15.8 xPE Hendriks: 7.04 ERA, 1.748 WHIP, 5.4 K/9, 2.30 K/BB (.353 BABIP) - 8.6 xPE Swarzak: 8.35 ERA, 1.855 WHIP, 4.9 K/9, 2.50 K/BB (.368 BABIP) - 8.4 xPE Deunsing: 6.34 ERA, 1.696 WHIP, 4.5 K/9, 2.38 K/BB (.350 BABIP) - 7.6 xPE Walters: 5.40 ERA, 1.527 WHIP, 5.6 K/9, 1.64 K/BB (.315 BABIP) - 6.5 xPE Blackburn: 7.33 ERA, 1.682 WHIP, 4 K/9, 1.64 K/BB (.327 BABIP) - 4.4 xPE Deduno: 3.38 ERA, 1.550 WHIP, 6.3 K/9, 0.93 K/BB (.252 BABIP) - 3.3 xPE Took me a while to calculate xPE (expected pitching effectiveness, if you want you can read more about it here) and this is how I like to look at pitching performance. Correlates pretty decency with xFIP but I never understood why xFIP and FIP put so much weight in HRs (which in my mind have a lot to do with park and luck) so I do not use them, but they also are peripheral number derived. xPE is a fairly fast calculation as well and does not use weights like FIP and xFIP, but again they are closely correlated with xPE putting more stress on BB allowed and treating all hits the same (unlike xFIP and FIP that weigh HRs and multi base hits more... and it is a pain to derive without excel) League average xPE is about 10. So the Twins had 3 SPs above average and a couple close. That's interesting and I'll look at it. A little complicated and over the top for my thinking. Those must be all the metrics to calculate I would assume. The problem I have with that is Pavano 5.8 over your 10 'average'. He's carried solely by an excellent 1.1 BB/9. The ERA, WHIP, and K/9 are all bad. I really dislike BABIP for pitchers. I'm more comfortable using it with batters. I could talk about how much I love OPS, but I have a question you might be able to answer. There's a stat for everything in baseball right? I have been thinking about OPS, but adding total SBs to the Total Bases on top. I think it may be a more accurate for true offensive output since it accounts for speed. I wouldn't subtract CS because faster players have other advantages on the base path that could negate it. Like getting to 3rd base instead of 2nd on long single. Unrelated, but I'm curious to see if it's been done and where I could find it.
  3. It was an interesting thought if he would re-sign if dealt to the Twins, but his situation is a killer. Normally, teams have to develop there own franchise Shortstops, so it was nice to think that the Rangers would share one of their two with us. There hasn't been an above average shortstop in Minnesota since Cristian Guzman and I feel some desperation.
  4. Happy and it's great to see pitchers who are actually good accomplish this rare feat. It occurs a lot more often now, which ruins how special it is.
  5. Andrus is a 23 year old All Star SS. That would be exciting for the fan base. Andrus will likely end up being better than most of players in BAs top 50 in the entire MLB. If the Twins can avoid dealing one of the guys in their fab five (Buxton, Arcia, Sano, Rosario, and Hicks), I really like the move. There isn't one good SS in the system either.
  6. Yeah after today, Devries should be on the hot seat too. Even after today, De Vries has been the second best starting pitcher for the Twins this season (and still leads the starters in K/9.) He earned a spot in the rotation. So did Deduno. You got to see whether these guys are part of the equation (as number 4 and 5 after Diamond) for 2013. So they got to pitch. Blackburn should be in the hot seat and I don't know how many more times Duensing needs to prove that he is great in the pen but iffy as a starter. Very much Perkins like. I am all for giving Swarzak another chance to start (he did have sporadic success there previously), but Duensing (or Blackburn) should move to the pen instead of demoting the Twins' second best starter.
  7. I don't mind what they're doing. I think they should keep his innings down because the season does wear down on younger players who don't have their arms stretched out like the vets. What I'd propose for them is only let him work 4 innings per start so he can go in the season a little deeper.
  8. After more thought: Blackburn, Devries, Walters, Florimon, Butera, and Casilla should all be new open spots too. I was really thinking about Butera with Herrmann incoming, yet I couldn't see him go. Maybe they finally move on. This is more wishful thinking than what I had been expecting in the original blog post. Overall I'd be content with this. I'll take the original word on Bromberg. Pitchers: Baker, Burnett, Burton, Deduno, Diamond, Duensing, Fien, Gibson, Hendriks, Hermsen, Hernandez, Oliveros, Perdomo, Perkins, Pugh, Robertson, and Swarzak 17 Pitchers Position: Doumit, Herrmann, Mauer, Carroll, Dozier, Escobar, Morneau, Parmelee, Plouffe, Arcia, Benson, Hicks, Mastroianni, Revere, Span, Willingham 16 Players That's a total of 33 spots. 7 Free Spots for 2 SP Free Agents, two bullpen arms (One LHP and one RHP), and 1 middle infield FA would put the Twins at a comfortable 38. 15 players were dumped in this process and 9 were added. I think this makes it look a lot better and it really goes to show it is a mess! Fien and Perdomo are big question marks, but I feel like they have earned their spots for now. I'm feeling maybe Slama, Bromberg, and Thielbar could all vie for spot later in the 2013 season, but not the offseason. Great discussion and I definitely learned quite a bit from conversing and have a better idea of the 40 man for next year as well. NOW what would be really interesting would be to track down the approximate payroll for this situation and see how much money can be dispensed on free agents.
  9. Yeah after today, Devries should be on the hot seat too.
  10. I am drooling at the thought of the Twins getting Elvis Andrus. I don't see much of a shot at getting him. I don't think the Rangers would want Span. Morneau maybe. If they get a deal centered around Andrus-Morneau all the while getting Parmelee to 1B=A+++
  11. I agree with this. People will say it was a bad move because they didn't trade Young after his breakout season. At the time of the move, it's a great deal. 1/3 a year of Young for Oliveros and Nelson.
  12. While I wouldn't gripe about Willingham being traded, I wouldn't like it at the moment. I'll try to go short and sweet and play DA. 1/2. It's not like he's going to jump off a cliff. I think other teams take into consideration more than one year of play. He's been a good player for a while now and trading him next deadline might be better if the Twins don't view themselves as contenders. 3. None of the Outfield prospects are ready yet and won't be at the start of next season. It would be too risky to play them now and count them (namely Hicks and Arcia) to be reliable. They are both age 22 and under. Willingham is on a 3 year contract. What's the rush? 4. This is a given, but he has the best arm in the Outfield right now. It certainly would be better if he played RF. As a RF this wouldn't be much of an issue. 5. Willingham has averaged 23HRs a season since 2006. Sure he might not get 30+, but it's crazy to think that he would stop hitting them altogether, or at least enough so to ruin his value. I think this point works in the Twins favor to keep him because not many other players hit for power. None of Twins have eclipsed 20 besides Willingham. Strikeouts come with big swings. The benefit greatly outweighs the negative. 6. ....Really? I reluctantly do agree though. One last thought. Why should Twins fans go to games when they trade away their best player? To the more casual fan, unlike the forum members here, that could affect revenue. People want to see good players.
  13. I really liked Melky Cabrera and was a little disappointed. The Twins and Giants aren't going to be trade partners as a result of this and I suspect you were just trying to get it into the more popular Twins Talk sub-forum. Not that I care too much though.
  14. Romero's power is great, but his inability to field from the hot corner is probably enough to keep him away from the MLB. He can't hit for average and isn't quick runner either. Power is also a frequent commodity at his position anyway. He's old and has only 1 or 2 tools (arm?). On a positive twist, I do like him more than Pedro Florimon!
  15. The return was small because it was probably well known the Twins weren't going to offer him a contract following that season anyway. I don't miss him and I still think it was one of Bill Smith's best moves.
  16. For me it doesn't really matter since I don't expect anyone on the current roster to be playing there in 2014. Jamey Carroll, Pedro Florimon, Alexi Casilla, Brian Dozier (AAA), and Eduardo Escobar (AAA) are the only 5 options right now. Carroll is gone after 2013 and is an old man. I don't expect anything bright from Florimon. Casilla's future is a big question mark. Both Dozier and Escobar have proven they aren't competent at this point and I wouldn't want to see either back in the bigs just yet. I guess I'd say Casilla at 2B for sure and a rotation of Carroll and Florimon at SS.
  17. Not at all. I honestly didn't realize it would pop out like that and was surprised and a little embarrassed when I saw it. My excuse is that it was a late night post.
  18. His bat is almost parallel to the ground now instead of angled off. I don't see much change in the height of his hands. 2012 actually looks lower in relation to his helmet. Maybe it's just the angle of the shot, I'm not sure.
  19. The Twins are sitting with a nearly filled quota on the 40 man roster and it's somewhat ugly. Only one vacant spot is available while starting pitchers P.J. Walters, Carl Pavano, and Scott Baker are on the 60 day DL. Soon enough, positions on this assembly will need to be cleared in order to make way for these incoming players. For now, it's not a problem, but there are a lot of gentlemen here that could and should be removed sooner rather than later. Priority will of course be assessed for who leaves first, but there are a lot of other changes I'd like to see made in the offseason too. Not only are there a few subtractions, but a couple of additions as well. #1. Tsuyoshi Nishioka- Status: Not on Active Roster What to do?! DFA I think it's safe to say he won't be playing with the Twins again for some time. In all likeliness (and hopefulness), the 28 year old international bust never re-joins the big league team for the remainder of his contract. It's really safe to say that no other team would save us from...I mean claim him. I would be fine with out-right waivers, but that gives him the opportunity to make more money back in Japan. An expensive AAA filler would be the best option and it benefits us somewhat. Rene Tosoni- Status: Not on Active Roster What to do? DFA The once promising outfielder failed in a 2011 campaign with the Twins and has been lost ever since. Tosoni has been struggling to break a .650 OPS in AA where he has been re-acquainted with for the first time since 2010. Is there still hope for him? Possibly, but probably not as a struggling 25 year old in an outfield deep system. He doesn't have much in the tools department either, and while he could get claimed, it would be best for the Twins to have that spot and for Tosoni to get a chance someplace else. I really enjoyed having him with the team though. His spunky personality and hilarious walk-up song were entertaining while they lasted. Kyle Waldrop- Status: Not on Active Roster What to do? Waive The first two seem like the least difficult choices on deciding who gets to come back. It wouldn't surprise me if they used the remaining open position once all three of Walters, Baker, and Pavano return. That's not to say Waldrop really needs a spot on here regardless. He's a soft tosser who infrequently can throw 90mph and suffice to say, strikeouts are also a rarity. Waldrop has been unsuccessful over the past two years in the MLB, but to his credit, he has only pitched 15 MLB innings combined. I don't think there's much of an incentive to keep him here past this offseason. More serviceable back up arms like Deduno and Devries exist when they inevitably lose their 25 man spots to new free agents. A #5 starter or long reliever is about as high a ceiling you'll get with the 26 year old high draftee from 2004. I just wanted to continue the trend this far. #4. Jeff Manship- Status: On 25 Man Roster What to do? DFA in offseason Four years of flirting with the majors with this player. He's not much more than a AAA starter and while there is a little potential, I don't see it. More or less, similar projection to Waldrop at best with better K numbers. As stated, somewhat of a strikeout pitcher, yet I refuse to picture him ever cracking the starting rotation. He's 27 now and it's about time to move on. He'll help Rochester win, but not Minnesota. Sort of like Clete Thomas.. the pitcher. Quite frankly I'd have him at a higher priority than Waldrop if he weren't in the majors right now. Release in offseason In a strange way, I sort of feel for him. He's not good, but I want him to succeed since he tries hard. On the other hand, isn't it time this experiment ended?! As a reliever, the biggest thing I ask is to be reliable and consistent. That's not what Jeff Gray is and it's a crapshoot every time he steps on the mound. Gray doesn't have a good track record either and is a walk machine. Have a look at all of his per 9 ratios and you'll find that none of them are acceptable and some are unbelievably putrid. Take that SO/BB as the biggest offender in the stats below. Waive Out with a shoulder injury if I'm not mistaken, Guiterrez has been a bust for the Twins. He really hasn't had a 2012 and 2011 was mediocre. He's spent 5 years in the system and hasn't thrown for the Twins once. I doubt he'll be a servicable player, but he could end up being a great reliever. It's difficult to tell since he's only pitched 82 Innings in AAA through the past 3 years. Over his minor league career, he's allowed far too many baserunners, has a below average WHIP, and bad walk rate. The strikeout ability would be enough for me to keep him for another year. Although, he's treading on thin ice as an underachieving 25 year old. I'd wouldn't pull him back should he be claimed, but I doubt it would be necessary. STATS: 2011 AAA/ 4.62ERA 1.460 WHIP 8.2 K/9 4.5BB/9 #9 Deolis Guerra- Status: Not on Active Roster What to do? Waive Guerra is somewhat young at 23 and hasn't sniffed the big leagues yet, so it may surprise a few. I'm not a big believer in him and wouldn't mind if he left the organization. He's had three years of shuffling between Rochester and New Britain as a starter (and now reliever) with no success. Scouts love his changeup and improving K/9 rate, but I don't love his BB/9 or ERA. Another pitcher I wouldn't revoke if claimed. STATS: 2010-2012 (Cumulative AA+AAA)/ 5.69 ERA 1.454 WHIP 7.69K/9 2.99BB/9 #10 Aaron Hicks- Status: Not on 40 Man Roster What to do? Add Hicks is an obvious choice to be added before the Rule 5 draft. I think the Twins will save an option year by avoiding September call-ups and wait to add him at the end of the season. Hicks projects to be a very exciting player and the future heir to centerfield. #11 David Bromberg- Status: Not on 40 Man Roster What to do? Add It's great to see Bromberg bouncing back after a poor 2011. He's re-established himself this year and I think we could see him compete for the rotation next year. David Bromberg would probably get drafted in the Rule 5 too this season. 2011 was his first year of eligibility for selection, but his season was so awful that he wasn't chosen. #12 Kyle Gibson-Status: Not on 40 Man Roster What to do? Add Another obvious choice for addition. Gibson is progressing along nicely and will have to be added so he can pitch next year. If everything goes according to plan of course. #13 Scott Baker and Jared Burton- Statuses: Impending FAs What to do? Re-Sign Both I'd really like to see both players back next year. Standing pat. SOME MATH: I would expect the roster spot owners of #1-9 to be freed up easily. Bringing in 2 from the 60 Day DL (Not Pavano at season's end) and 3 from addition gives the Twins 35/40 spots freed in the offseason. As proof..... 39-9+2+3=35 This entire offense is under contract for next season, but depending on what the Twins sign for pitching in the offseason, it may affect some of the others players well-beings. I would have released Blackburn and took his spot, but I don't believe the Twins will cut him. I do think they'll bring back Baker and hopefully Burton. SPs: Baker, Gibson, Diamond, Blackburn, Walters, Devries, Deduno, Hendriks, Hernandez, Bromberg With that state, the Twins should probably sign 2 free agent pitchers in addition to Baker if they want to contend. The offense we have is above average and a few new pitching counterparts would really help and make this team competitive in a weak AL Central. There still looks like too many starters on the 40 man despite the deletions of Manship, Waldrop, and Pavano. RPs: Burnett, Burton, Duensing, Fien, Perdomo, Oliveros, Perkins, Robertson, Swarzak That's 9 relievers and not enough. This entire group looks awful and it's full of question marks besides Perkins and Burton. The Twins like to roll with 8 here and only 1 backup isn't good. I'd like to sign a couple of more established relievers, but it if they sign 2 FA pitchers it gets complicated. I think they may have to make a few tough decisions on Walters, Fien, Perdomo, Deduno, Devries, and Blackburn if they want to have a good bullpen to compliment the rotation. The Twins aren't far from contention and have played above .500 since May and a couple of new pieces would put them in a very good position. It all depends on how aggressive they chose to be in free agency. They'll likely do a little addition by subtraction in a Timberwolves-esque style of improvement too. The draft picks were nice, but it's not far-fetched to think a solid 2013 lies ahead!
  21. Manship could be another to add rosterman.
  22. Good work and the pitching matchups for Wednesday look awesome.
  23. I think he scares many, myself included, as being a Nick Blackburn type.
