  1. Doumit and Willingham were better than Cuddy and Kubel for less money. The fact the starting pitching disintigrated was not to be expected by anyone. We are in trasition between groups of players and this year (while hopfully better) is a year of finding out what we have. That's why Hicks needs to start in Minnesota if he has a decent spring training, and we needed to move outfielders to create spots. Parmalee has to get enough AB's to see if he can contribute and settle what the Twins need to do with Morneau. It's nice to spend other people's money, but rarely do any of us get the chance. Kansas City and Pittsburg have been 20 -25 year rebuilding plans, so hopefully TR will be able to fix the issues.
  2. Do not want anything to do with Jurrgens. Has good years and bad years, loss of velocity is a red flag.
  3. Twins may be ranked lower because of the bulk of the talent being at lower levels. Still think they can move up rapidly with a few of the players now hitting Double A this year and the bulk of the system hitting full season ball. This plus the #4 prospect and any other signings will help.
  4. None of the above, Why hold back prospects/suspects if 2013 is going to be a see what we have year.
  5. Here's hoping they sign the Cuban shortstop Diaz. It would be a risk, but the Twins do not have a shortstop in the system who could be here in the next two years. Santana is the only shortstop that has a chance and he rates to start at New Britian, and is no guarentee to hit enough to stick.
  6. Twins also have Gibson who should be here next year. That should qualify as a help. I can see the frustration, but the Twins do not want to block the young players coming up. Once a new foundation is built, then you sign players to fill in the holes. I know it is tough, but next year is being written off(informally) , with only the hope they can compete if thing break well.
  7. I wrote the piece as a way to show how bad a hand Gardenhire has for this year. Pitching rates to be better, but to trade Span and Revere and expect the hitting will improve is asking way to much. Pitching wins, but the Twins could have below average offense in Right Field, Center Field, Third Base and Shortstop(this is giving Carroll a pass as a full time second baseman and hoping he will be average). It could be difficult for the 6th hitter in the Twins order to produce, because he will be pitched around and the 7,8 and 9 hitters do not seem to be a threat to competent pitchers. I could be one of the lower order could come through, but the Twins pitching is not good enough to give 2 - 3 innings a game away for the hitting.
  8. Wonderful article. Still you always will need the ground troops to evaluate people of the same level. How do they handle pressure? How are they in the clubhouse? Can the better players lead the clubhouse? These are not statistics, but qualities that need to be found out.
  9. Terry Ryan is amassing many parts in pitching to see which ones of them work out. Most are signed for short term(all Starters), so as not to block the hopefully young pitchers that will be here in 1 - 3 years. If the young pitchers do not work out, he can then be assessed on that score, not for trying to balance a fair competitive ballclub now and a very good ballclub of young players in 2 - 3 years. Time to spend money of free agents will be in 2 - 3 years after the holes become apparent. Pitching still wins games and is going to be very expensive all the time.
  10. Question is did Gardenhire insist on Rick Anderson being retained and therefore linked the two fates together. I see little chance of the Twins doing well enough to save his job. Look at this list. 1. Hicks or Benson turn into at least serviceable players, so the centerfield hole is filled with Span type numbers. 2. Plouffe turns into be a decent playballer and hits .270 with 25 - 30 homeruns 3. Parmalee proves he can hit major league pitching and hits 30 doubles, 15 homeruns and a .280 BA 4. Mauer and Morneau both have good years and stay off the DL. 5. Twins find that Dozier, Carroll, Floriman are decent defenders all all hit in the .260 - .270 range. 6. Twins starting pitchers ERA is a little over 4, as Rich Harden returns to form and Worley, Diamond, and Gibson are all solid. One of Pelfrey or Correria becomes the #5 starter and the other takes Swarzak's spot. 7. Bullpen is solid as Perkins. Burton, Fien and Duesing all do good jobs out of the pen. This is way to much to expect to get to .500 or slightly over, but it would be great if it happened.
  11. What to do with Morneau would be a good problem to have if he has a good first half. This is more tied in with how Parmalee does the first half. If Parmalee looks competent then he should be traded, if not he needs to be extended.
  12. I like J.P. Howell or Mike Gonzalez, They would give a second lefty or third lefty in the pen.
  13. Also cubs rotation will require good health from all their pitchers. Almost a given that will not happen.
  14. Grade to me looks more like imcomplete. Many pieces still outstanding and trades will take 2 - 3 years to judge winners and losers. At least the Twins tried some moves instead of doing nothing.
  15. If Bauer was that good Arizona would not have traded him. Twins may finish last this year, White Sox may be close, but they are headed in the right direction. Amass arms that may function at a major league, and hope enough of the starters can pitch well.
  16. Twins need to come close to breaking even. They still have some bills from the building of the statium. Payroll will likely be between $80 - $85, plenty if you are rebuilding without saying you are rebuilding. Twins will need to spend extra money in 2- 3 years when hopefully the farm system brings enough talent to be competitive for at least division titles.
  17. I think they ought to treat Hicks as Puckett, Hunter, Span and the rest. Bring he up and let him play.
  18. The two year deal is the only one that bothered me. If May and Meyer are not ready by 2014 second half or one of the other Twin minor leaguers we are in deep trouble with a total pitching staff rebuild needed again
  19. Twins have plenty of outfielders coming. Cubs have added some pitching and have not fixed their offensive or defense. I expect a couple of more low risk, high reward signings of starters and then see what sticks. (Harden hopefully)
  20. Take a look at him and if he looks good sign him. Seems like all he wants is a minor league contract with incentives. Option year if possible. This guy could pitch.
  21. Parmalee is no sure bet to suceed. Morneau could come close to his old form. I could see extending Morneau now for 2 extra years at 9 - 10 mil a year and wait for the kids to arrive. If Parmalee suceeds then you could revisit trading Morneau or Parmalee and expect a reasonable return.
  22. Twins may still not be done adding pitchers. Worley alone makes this a better group. Gibson should also help by the end of May. Correia and Pelfrey will hold down spots waiting for the kids. Maybe one of last years starting staff will be able to help. This group should be better, much better not at the start, but by midyear quite possibly.
  23. Rosario may be here in 2014, with a chance in 2013. 3B needs to give Pouffe a chance for next year and then see what we have. Sano may or may not stick. Santana may be here in 2014 - 2015. Pitching is the problem area and you need more than max #3 types. Hopefully a couple of the better ones develop. Twins now have about 8 - 10 #4 and #5 types. Better is needed. Twins need to trade only for pitching and MI prospects(second choice). Mariners might be best target(noted above) for a deal to bring back more pitching. That is the way to go.
  24. This is a decent signing. If he makes it fine, if he looks real bad the cost is not super high. Much better than Corriea
  25. Parmelee is a hugh risk. He may make it or not. We have others coming, but would rather have Morneau if he can still produce and wants to be here. Contract would have to be closer to 10 mil a year however.
