  1. For those of us who don't fight addiction, I think it is hard to understand how difficult it is.to overcome. I wish him well. Apparently the Commish will have a pretty wide latitude due to Hamilton's prior problems. Playing ball should be a low priority although I understand it may be his lifeline.
  2. Because it is such serious business. BTW, why don't we have an emoticon that bounces on the floor laughing?
  3. Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS · 1m1 minute ago Johan santana has agreed to sign with blue jays. Santana is still only 34. Wouldn't bet against him. I'd like him to have some success and retire on a high note. At least for now that's one reunion tour that isn't happening,
  4. Yeah but I gotta think that 3-4 hours in the booth is more draining for him than 2 weeks on the field. And he did say he'll make the occasional appearance -- but as more of a guest interview, I think. Sounds like he was thoroughly enjoying himself this a.m. -- so eager he showed up at 7 a.m.
  5. Loved both parts of this, Can't wait to see who you catch up with next.
  6. No. I don't think TR worries much about the mob. Jim Pohlad and Dave St. Peter probably worry about the mob. I think TR is comfortable living with his decisions.
  7. With the Twins, change is incremental. Paul Molitor seems more receptive to statistical analysis than Gardenhire. If so, that's a big step. I also don't think TR will interfere with Molitor's game management. I don't think we'll see much change in the player selection side until TR is gone.
  8. Ricky says he feels good. Hughes says Nolasco's sinker was one of the best he has seen: http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2015/02/25/twinsights-ricky-nolasco-feels-lot-better-twins-debut-season/
  9. Next time Jack is around, ask him.
  10. It is defintely more than one person because Jack Goin, the Manager, Major League Administration and Baseball Research, was hiring for at least one position last summer. The ad is on a thread somewhere. How many besides Jack, the new hire, and an intern is anybody's guess. I don't dispute the ranking, though. Edit: A little insight from Parker: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/15593-article-twins-research-team-wont-tip-their-pitches/?hl=%2Bjack+%2Bgoin http://twinsdaily.com/topic/13852-article-where-are-the-twins-at-with-statistical-analysis/?hl=%2Bjack+%2Bgoin And here's the thread on the job opening: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/11577-jack-goin-discusses-twins-job-opening-etc-was-all-right-all-you-geniuses/?hl=%2Bjack+%2Bgoin and the fangraphs ad: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/job-posting-twins-developer/
  11. I think that is Joe Vavra's job. Phil Miller ‏@MillerStrib · 5h5 hours ago Interesting. Long after Twins clubhouse had emptied, Kurt Suzuki worked w/ Joe Vavra on pitch-framing and footwork.
  12. I just think he stayed too long. I know I had a tendency to tune him out. I would guess there was a bit of that with some players as well. I always thought Gardenhire's greatest strengths were the ability to maintain an even keel over the course of the season and his unwavering loyalty to his cadre of coaches and to some players. I also thought that his greatest strength became one of his greatest weaknesses when he seemingly was willing to fall on his sword for some of his staff (particularly Rick Anderson). I also thought he struggled with the even keel over the last couple of seasons. He just seemed tired to me. I hope his wife puts him on a healthy diet and gets him into relaxation mode. I look for a comeback next season. I really think he needed a change of venue.
  13. Thinking mostly of the coaching hires, revamping the Twins defensive playbook system-wide, attention to detail, using stats without getting bogged down in them. The references to his aggressiveness and intensity along with the stories on how much preparation he has put in. We don't know how it will all play out but he hasn't really made any missteps yet. It's going to be fun to watch his development and the way players respond to him. At least it's not the same old, same old.
  14. New stories, new cliches. My ears were tired of Gardy's shtick so the change is welcome. Monitor wasn't my first choice but I like most of what he's done and said so far. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
  15. LOVE these stories and photos. Thank you both. I wish I had some distinct memories of trips to the Met & "big city" but most of my recollection are just vague impressions
  16. My post wasn't random. It was in response to a question specifically posed above. In general I don't post much in the metrics discussions so you are certainly free to "include more stats and math in an attempt to increase our understanding of the beautiful game." I'm not trying to interfere with that. It would be nice if these threads didn't come down to the same arguments over and over. I have often commented that I learn more from Parker's articles than anything else on this site -- he has the ability to use statistical analysis in a comprehensible, non-argumentative way. My strong hint was for metrics discussions to be kept out of game threads. In the past, game threads have generally been reserved for light hearted discussions of the current game. The invasion of metrics into those discussions would certainly put a damper on that. It's one thing if there are only a few still watching the game. It's wholly different if the group is lively. (This discussion should probably be in a different discussion. Sorry for going off topic.)
  17. Everyone is welcome but if game threads start getting bogged down in metrics, I'm running away just like some of those who have already fled.
  18. "Do others perceive there to be significant advanced metric gospelization taking place here?" I try to stay away from the metrics threads. The endless bickering tends to give me a headache. But yes, there is more worship at the sabremetric altar than in the early days of TD. That's okay but the fervency of the "discussion" (and often the failure to recognize that the opposing view is not "all or nothing") is off-putting. I'm waiting for games to start so we can have some fun and talk about reality instead of some hypothetical statistical universe. And strong hint: game threads are usually not the place for metrics.
  19. True. I think Halsey has said that he is putting in a lot of time on Perry's Hill so he should be getting a good workout that translates to MORE POWER!
  20. –Outfielder Eddie Rosario has moved his offseason home to Miami, which made it easier for him to commute to the Twins’ complex in Fort Myers this winter. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2015/02/20/twinsights-lhp-lewis-thorpe-progressing-well-elbow-scare/
  21. Patrick Reusse ‏@1500ESPN_Reusse · 2h2 hours ago Kennys Vargas went to Puerto Rico to attend a wedding. Twins hope he avoids cake. Weighed 289 (I heard) at TwinsFest; had lost 8 lbs. since.
  22. Some pretty high praise for Rosario in this Reusse article: http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/292542471.html?page=2&c=y He'll be playing CF in ST, and Mientkiewicz calls him the best hitter in the Twins system.
  23. For some reason I thiink it is about 29 million. And was renegotiated about 2011-2012. But I've always wished we had more details especially with these huge contracts elsewhere - you Minnesotans just aren't big enough cable subscribers, $29 million -- found a story: http://www.thatstwinsbaseball.com/the-twins-new-tv-contract-and-its-impact-on-payroll/
  24. Love this series, John. Thanks. I suspect that I felt about Harmon as a child the way later fans felt about Kirby or Herbie ...... just larger than life.
  25. I always wondered if he benefited from the residual effect of whatever they gave him legally to reduce the inflammation of his sacroiliac joint. Steroids are often used to treat inflammation and we've since found out that PEDs can be used in certain circumstances with permission of some czar or committee in the commissioner's office. So it just seems to me that may have been the case. But you are right about the short home runs so it could just be coincidence.
