Should be easy enough to get from the Nationals, I say bring him in, let him play some RF and 3B.
Nothing to lose, and he could add some awesome veteran presence as a proven winner and someone who has all the intangibles as well.
Plus he is better than these scrubs we have been getting off the waiver wire.
Get it done Jerry Ryan!
You don't bunt when you are down 9-0.
If its 1-0,2-0 etc then sure, do what you need to do. I would be personally ashamed to be a Twins fan if they had Carroll try to bunt in the 9th inning of that game. To say the "unwritten rules of baseball" are BS basically makes you look like some ignorant fan that A. Has never played and B. Has no respect for the game. The "no steals up 5" rule is a little grey though, I'd argue that 5 runs isn't enough, but if you are up by 7+ you shouldn't be taking extra bases and stealing bags.
Interesting note: we were losing a baseball game last weekend 11-2 (ouch) and had a guy steal against us, you better believe the next batter got thrown at, and the other team was perfectly fine with this, in fact they were only upset with the idiot who stole 2nd.
Butera isn't going to get at bats, having him on the major league roster isn't going to hurt anyone and he is already on the 40 man roster etc. Having Herrmann up instead literally makes no difference as he won't get at bats and might as well get at bats every day in the minors. You bring up Lopez over Butera and Thomas while ignoring that Thomas is on the roster bc he is a 4th OF (something Lopez can't do) and Butera is on the roster bc he is a Catcher (something Lopez can't do) If your argument is "well he is a better hitter than Butera" then I hate to inform you that we could replace Lopez's name with any player in the majors and at least 1000 in the minors. Lopez may be better than Burroughs and Plouffe, but I'd argue that both have more upside than Lopez as both are a little more of an unknown quantity at the major league level, Plouffe still has a shred of hope of turning into a Cuddyer like player. Lopez is known garbage (3800+ PA in the majors) and does nothing to improve the team heading into 2013+, Plouffe at least has a slight chance to pull it together to be a super utility player from here on out.
I assumed this move was done bc Mauer is still a little sore/day to day after taking the foul ball off the knee? If that is the case Butera will be back down by the end of the weekend and most likely won't see many at bats. (Only as a defensive replacement or if Doumit is PR for)
As others have pointed out, there would be no "down side" but there would also be no upside as well. The guy can't even hit the mid 80's at this point, that just isn't going to fly.
The Mets do it as well and it works pretty well. I'm not sure TK would want to do it 162 games a year, so maybe you just do it for home games or something? Him and Bert going back on forth on some things could be pretty entertaining and would soften the sting out of some of the 80-90 losses we are looking at this year.
Heh, nice. I don't think anyone is saying Valencia is some sure thing great baseball player, but on the list of Twins needs he is rather far down on this list, somewhere behind SP,SP, SP, RP,RP,RP,RP, 2B, SS, RF
Liriano's problem is he can't throw strikes, I'm not sure a move to the bullpen would help him to much at this point. Things could get even worse potentially! I mean, I am as frustrated as it comes with the guy, at this point my only hope is he somehow manages to show a bit of a spark to make some team willing to take him off our hands at the trade deadline for a C type prospect, anything more would be a nice win in my book. After spring training I really thought he had a shot at 180+ IP and a sub 4.00 ERA...ugh, that seems like years ago instead of just a month ago :/
I think the Twins have a relatively small TV deal compared to many other clubs, which has to hurt for quite a bit. Also, they now have to pay into rev sharing.
TK is pretty awesome and a nice change of pace.
However I would prefer TK to remain a part of the organization in more of a "mentor" role moving forward like he has been.
I wouldn't mind a 3 man booth from time to time with Bert, TK and Dick. That could be fun times for sure.
I know where to find them...thanks bud. I'm asking you, since you seem to think we can just grab one so easily to please name ONE, just one 3rd baseman we can go out and get cheaply who will be such a clear upgrade over Valencia.
Burroughs can at least fill in at 3rd base and may have some shred of an upside left. Yeah, obviously anything would be better than a 13th pitcher but this is basically the same as saying in 2010/2011 that "X player would be better than having on the roster then Drew Butera/Rivera 3rd catcher" If the Twins were actually a contending team like the Rays this year, then yeah I see why you would take a chance on a Matsui or something, but a rebuilding team has no business picking up a guy like Matsui. Especially when DH is already filled up.
As long as the Twins are playing below .500 there is no reason to pull Liriano from the rotation. Might as well trot him out there every 5 days and pray/hope/etc he figures it out a bit and can build up a little trade value prior to the trade deadline.
If the Twins were actually looking like a playoff contender at this point, and there was a clear better option to replace him, then by all means pull him from the rotation, but I am not so sure they have a clear upgrade at this point in the Swarzak, Manship, bunch.
On another note, I wouldn't mind seeing Diamond get a few starts in the majors, though he looks like a #5 at best.
Who are playing third base at the AAA level for those teams?I don't keep up to date with those farm systems, I know Dominguez is with the Marlins but he won't come cheap. Also, if one of them have a stud in waiting, it's not like they are just going to give them up for nothing. If the Twins are going to make a trade for any type of young player I'd personally prefer it being a SP with a high upside or a middle infielder. I have still yet to hear the suggestion from you of the player we can get cheaply who will be so much better than Valencia.
As I mentioned, I don't think he is a .799 OPS type guy, so yeah, he prob had a little good luck in 2010, however his BABIP in 2010 more or less matched the same he had in AA/AAA, so with everything else in consideration he is closer to the player he was in 2010 then he was in 2011.
