    Oh yeah, Doumit, I guess he has been "healthy" the past couple days, but who knows if he was available tonight. If he was I imagine he would have PH at least? I don't think its a knock on Mauer's ability to handle a pitcher, I think its just more a comfort thing for De Vries who was most likely going to be beyond amped up as there is/was a good chance this will be his only start in the majors for his career (or close to it). Any sort of familiarity for him couldn't have hurt. Also, for whatever freak reason, Butera is on a hot streak at this point, it won't last but I don't really have a problem giving him at bats as long as he is having an OPS over .850! I think the plan still is for Mauer to catch that many games, the reason he has played so much DH and 1st base thus far is that both Doumit and Morneau have been banged up a bit. Once Doumit is back to full strength I think you see him as the regular DH and giving Mauer a day off from time to time.

    It wouldn't work, teams would simply "unintentionally" walk a guy on purpose anyways by throwing everything 2 feet above the strike zone.

    I wouldn't be in a rush to bring him back up, let him dominate AAA for another few weeks at least, last thing we want to do is bring him up early again only to watch him get shelled again. The season is still plenty young.

    Mauer has played in 43 games so far this year, and other then a minor injury I think he has only sat out one other game. At this point the bench is basically non existent and for whatever reason Butera is hitting pretty well so far this year (surely this won't last). As long as our bench is so thin (seriously who was he taking at bats away from tonight? Plouffe? Komatsu? Mastronni?) and Butera continues to get on base you might as well DH/1B Mauer as much as possible to keep him fresh. Komatsu and Mastronni should be no where near a major league roster and Plouffe's mediocre production doesn't force you to play him everyday as well.

    Very nice. As long as a player isn't drawing anything vulgar in the dirt who the hell cares? People act like pitching mounds/stadiums are some sacred grounds which never be touched, when in reality US Cell field or whatever it is called is a dump that should be burned to the ground, just like the other Chicago stadium.

    +1I would like nothing more then for Walters and Diamond to help anchor our rotation for the next 4-5 years, however unless Rick Anderson is a true miracle worker I would be thrilled if ONE of those guys ended up being a solid #4/#5 for the next couple years.

    It has nothing to do with tipping pitches and more to do with teams actually getting tape on a guy as well as seeing his pitches again in person. I like what Walters has done, but his overall lack of minor league success and lack of "stuff" has me a little wary of calling him a legit starting pitcher. The good news for him is he will hold down the spot for sometime, so we should have a better understanding of his potential over the course of his next 15 starts or so.

    I'd argue that Mauer being healthy, Span being healthy, Morneau being healthy, Willingham and Dozier as our main sources of optimism at this point. (not taking into consideration minor legauers like Sano, Rosario and Arcia)

    None of those guys will come close to sticking at the level of Baker (who when healthy is a solid #2), Blackburn is nothing more than a #5 and in all reality Diamond is the only one with a chance better then 25% at sticking as a #5. The Twins need more than an ace, they need to find a #1/#2/#3 and maybe even a #4 moving forward. That is a tall task to say the least.

    They need to head into next season with the thought that they need to fill a minimum of 3 rotation spots, and ideally 4 rotation spots. I think out of the Gibson/Hendricks/Diamond/Blackburn group we can reasonably expect 1-2 spots from those 4, counting on 3 or 4 of those guys to hold down a spot all of 2013 is foolish.

    No he didn't. DeVries spent all of 2010 and 2011 in the pen and has significantly less upside then a guy like Diamond. A case could be made against PJ Walters, but both a pretty meh and non prospects at the end of the day.

    I agree with you on that, but the more concerning thing is our utter lack of SP depth of anywhere in the minors. Diamond is the only one out of that group that can be considered a "legit" option to be a starter in the league, and even he up until this season looked more or less a longshot. This season has hopefully showed the Twins that they need to start taking a more aggressive approach to starting pitching in future drafts/signings/trades. The day of drafting nothing but soft tossing strike throwers needs to end. The infatuation with "finding the next Radke" needs to change, there is nothing wrong with having some guys like Blackburn, Pavano, Diamond, Walters, Hendricks, etc in your system, there is something wrong when that is all your system has. Taking a chance on a guy like Shooter Hunt was a nice start even though he didn't pan out, ideally the Twins decide to take some hard throwers in the draft, I'm not so much worried about #2 as I am about the next 5-8 picks they have.

    Mark Texiera has a lifetime .370 OBP and a lifetime OPS of .898.Howard averaged 50 HR a year the 4 years prior to his contract extension. Trumbo has a long ways to go to match either one of them.

    The Angels would have zero need or desire for Span IMO. You know who could probably get you Trumbo straight up? Ramos. But we had to trade him for a proven all-star, mediocre, closer a couple years ago.

    He has his warts no doubt, but he has a ton of raw power, and though he strikes out a lot, its not at a Mark Reynolds or Adam Dunn level. The lack of walks is concerning, but as long as he can keep his SO's between 100-130 his 30+ HR power makes him a pretty solid choice, in 2010 he was able to draw 58 walks in the minors, so basically he has the potential to be a poor mans Cecil Fielder, with less strike outs, a little less power, but a little higher batting average and versatility defensively.

    We might have the worst major league rotation baseball has seen in a very long time. Good for DeVries though, I hope he has some success, there is nothing wrong with guys like Diamond, Walters and DeVries getting a shot, the problem is that when those three make up 60% of your current starting rotation!

    I'm not so sure why everyone is so convinced that the Angels will just give up Trumbo for nothing, or trade him at all. They can simply have him play RF moving forward and filling in at 3B from time to time if he can improve. They certainly aren't going to give him up for two relief pitchers and most likely the Twins would have to part with at least one top prospect to even be in the conversation, and if that is the case then it really makes no sense for the Twins to explore.
