  1. The Athletics have won one post season series in the last 25 years or so. I wouldn't call that successful overall. The Rays had an amazing GM, Manager and a high number of their high draft picks ended up working out for the absolute best. The Twins also are in significantly better shape then both of those franchises which have terrible stadiums (remember, Target Field was sold to the Minnesota citizens as a way to compete with the big boys!), zero fan interest etc
  2. Amen. Look at the Mets, they had payroll constraints this year and were still able to bring in Cesepedes with ZERO issue. Look at the Rangers, they were able to get Philly to kick in some dollars in the Hamels deal! Look at the Royals, they don't have a lot of money yet were able to snag an ace (Cueto) and stud (Zobrist) at the deadline. The Twins have not once done anything close to this in TR's legacy, even though he could have any of his 17 years (though probably only in the 7-8 years when the Twins were competitive would it have made sense) Money is no precluding them from making these types of moves to "go for it", so lets just save the "The Twins can't afford it" for another thread please. Also if money was as big as an issue as some make it out to be, they never would have given Pelfrey another contract after he did absolutely nothing for us in the first one.
  3. I'm just really tired of the "aww shucks, we are a small market ballclub we can't afford to play with the big boys"meme that so many people have been duped into believing. Even prior to the opening of Target Field the Twins had plenty of money at their disposal to spend, they just choose not to. However, it should be noted that they never ONCE brought in a Cliff Lee, Johnny Cueto, etc at the deadline, guys who had 3 months left of a contact who could essentially give your team a boost into the playoffs and beyond. Those guys don't cost that much money, you are getting them for a pro-rated amount of one season, even at a 20 million dollar salary, you would only be paying 6 million or so if you got them at the deadline, am we to believe that the Twins couldn't afford to tack on an extra 6 million (often times much lower) or so at anytime during their last "run"? There are multiple ways to be aggressive: via the trade market and via free agency are two of those, TR has done neither, and that is the bottom line. 1991 is a great example because it shows how "going for it" actually does pay off!
  4. It's the ads, it was screwing up firefox a TON recently as well.
  5. The Royals traded for Cueto (an elite ace) and traded for Zobrist (a very good position player) this season to bolster their chances, they also traded for Shields the year prior (an ace, or close to an ace) and made the world series. The Mets traded for a game changer in Cepesdes at the deadline. Both teams were aggressive at the deadline (which the Twins never have been) In addition the Blue Jays were aggressive as well and came close to the world series as well. My problem with the Twins is that they are NEVER aggressive, it's one thing if they refuse to hand out 6 year contracts to MVP types or Ace pitchers, but then to compound that by refusing to actually ever be aggressive at a trade deadline to acquire a game changing player? Just conservative all around, with no aggressive moves. The results frankly haven't been there for TR, it would be nice if he would try to take a different approach for once.
  6. Delta far and away is the best airline in the US.
  7. Not sure why Padres would do this deal
  8. What an episode! Offerman comes up huge, as does Danza and Wilson.
  9. I think Mauer has a bounce back season personally, and when they make the playoffs (in 16 or 17) I think he comes up huge and becomes closer to "Puckett like" amongst the masses. (He already is a better player then Puckett IMO) Just a couple gut feelings.
  10. The odds of Mauer getting released are only slightly better then him going back to catcher. It's. Not. Going. To. Happen.
  11. selling high would have been at the trade deadline
  12. Showing that Danny Santana is our plan B (or gulp plan A) at CF to start the season isn't a good selling point IMO. You think the Twins would have learned about unsustainable BABIp from Santana, but it appears they didn't when they targeted JR
  13. Toronto is behind the Twins and have handed out big contracts, Cinci is behind the Twins and have handed out big contracts. I never said every deal those teams did was great, I said that those teams that are similar to the Twins have gone out and signed top free agents, in some cases, multiple times. Last I checked, the Twins current model hasn't worked for them anytime in the last 20 years, perhaps it's time to try to make an aggressive move for once? Bring in an ace for once? Bring in a game changer true top position player at once? What is the worst that can happen? A bad contract and no World Series berths for 6-7 years?
  14. Yeah, they eventually have to make it to Sioux Falls, no? (As it was alluded to in season 1) I have a feeling Ed is in for the long haul, he has now killed 2 guys, wonder how many more he will kill before he "gets his" Maybe Ed is the closest thing to a Lester this season? Simple man, not respected by his wife, etc
  15. Lol I just found this thread, I just watched the first two episodes on my delta flight. Amazing looking show, apparently the whole season is great according to reviews, not going to read any of the posts in this thread until I blow through season 1.
  16. Correa prob got some bonus points because he was hyped up more and went to the playoffs. I would have voted for Lindor, but this isn't as bad as other past votes
  17. I dont think Vargas is anything real special, but there is absolutely zero reason to get rid of him for nothing at this point.
  18. Schwarber is an elite bat IMO, he had a .333/.429/.613 line in the minors (his AA/AAA numbers are similar to this as well) I'm not sure he is good enough to stick at catcher, looking at his cs% in the minors it was pretty unimpressive (and that is just one portion of the position) So basically you are looking at a corner OF/DH (his fielding with almost certainly get better) with .900-.950 OPS potential or a truly elite all time great hitting catcher if he can stick behind the dish. I would trade Berrios for him straight up in a heartbeat, but the Cubs would never do it. (And I like Berrios quite a bit)
  19. How is that related? Kluber is a cy young winner, Berrios is a nice prospect who hasn't logged one inning in major league ball.
  20. Source? I didn't realize the Twins "books" were public knowledge to be honest. I would be interested to see where this number came from. Also, as it has been mentioned, there have been plenty of cases where teams with similar markets and similar payrolls (often times with smaller payrolls) have gone "big" in free agency and landed Ace type or Game Changers in terms of position players: Seattle Texas Colorado San Diego Miami All come to mind immediately and of course there are many more. Nobody has suggested they need to take a Yankees or Dodgers approach and "go sign everybody", so there is no need to bring the Dodgers into this equation at all. Many people have asked for "hey instead of signing a few mid rotation guys for 100+ million, why not take a stab at a true ace?" or "hey instead of signing the Willinghams, Hunters, etc of the world, why not try to bring in a game changer in the OF etc?"
  21. Also if the BoSox go out and get Price or Cueto, suddenly the move looks not nearly as bad IMO. Either way though, it's a great trade for the Padres IMO, they aren't ready to compete in 2016 and likely 2017, and they get some nice prospects in return.
  22. It was a LOT to give up for a RP IMO, but Margot to me seems a lot closer to a Billy Hamilton type then a true 5 tool player type. NTM the Red Sox are a team that is basically going to always be in win now mode, it has worked for them very recently (last to first), they have an overall nice looking team and good pieces, so I totally see where they are coming from. They can always get more prospects in a year if they fall out of it and can simply trade Kimbrel again.
  23. Yup, this is a very big part of what makes them a difficult "enemy"
  24. I think he was being facetious
  25. In my experiences, Parisians are just like New Yorkers, they are perfectly nice etc as long as you respect them and their customs. It's when an overweight family from Wisconsin (stereotyping!) goes to a restaurant or bar and bitches about the cooking/no ketchup/no bud light. I think its basically going to come down to if the museums etc are going to be open or not when we arrive. I emailed the lady who owns the apartment that we are going to rent and she suggested we still come (though there are about 1600 reasons why she might say that regardless) Seriously though you have some good advice, I appreciate it. And I do care how people view me (though I don't really care about random people on a Twins message board who may think I am some douche because I have some hot sports opinions about our beloved team, live and let live etc)
