  1. While I think it was too much to give up, it's not the Arizona's GM's job to worry about other teams GM's and how "ticked off" they will be towards him for the trade. I do give them credit for going "all in" now With a front of the rotation featuring Greinke, Miller and Corbin they can match up with anyone in the playoffs. (Robbie Ray is no slouch as well) Goldschmidt might be one of the best two or three all around hitters in baseball, Pollock is a rising star and Peralta and Castillo have great bats as well. That looks like a legit contender in my eyes, and if they can win a title (or even make a world series) in the next 4-5 years then nobody cares what they gave up IMO.
  2. Also I know a lot of people would be "hating" on this idea, but if you wanted to buy low on a great RP, I would inquire about Papelbon. Guy is still an elite arm, yes, he is a doucher, but then again IMO he is no worse than Hunter (Hunter punched a teammate, Hunter had a bunch of "controversial comments" etc) Also Papelbon has every reason in the world to be on his best behavior, if he can come to the Twins and stay out of any major issues involving teammates then he could be looking at a huge payday again on the open market. I'd bet Washington would even pick up a decent chunk of the bill.
  3. I agree with this, however I think Storen is better than a lot of the RP that got picked up already, on the FA market he may have been able to command 30 million+
  4. Storen and Ramos for Plouffe and Suzuki
  5. Yeah, it's an apples to oranges comparison IMO. Arizona is very very very much "all in" nobody else was going to come close to that package, good for Atlanta though and good for Arizona, it should be a fun 4-5 years for that fan base for sure!
  6. Oh yeah, that definitely was a factor, but IMO it's well, well worth the risk. I still like the idea of trying to trade for Gray or Shields, I'd like to take a run at Cueto but I think the price tag will be to high sadly after the Grienke and Price contacts. 6 years 150 mil or so. I would do 5/120 for him though in a heart beat but I think he already turned down something similar.
  7. FYI if you are going to put words into my mouth (which was from a different thread) at least make it somewhat accurate I said teams with the twins payroll, revenue, market etc have acquired elite players, whether that is an ace or a game changer on offense, also I said they do it through FA signings OR Trades. ie the royals traded for shields three years ago and Cueto last year. The blue Jays traded for Price etc etc
  8. May shouldn't be a reliever. But how many SP are ahead of Dean now?
  9. Yeah, it's not hard to acquire talent through the draft when you are picking top 10 for several years in a row.
  10. Yeah, the problem is that he seems to think that this team automatically will win at least 83 games again, (At that point you need to find just 5-6 more wins, which is feasible if Buxton, Sano, Berrios all contribute) the problem is though by nearly every advanced metric (and even the non ones) the Twins were much closer to a 73-75 win team last year, which means they need to add about 13-15 wins to be a playoff team. You can't do that relying on a couple rookies and a couple "meh" signings or trades.
  11. Yeah, Dean sits 87-89 mostly.
  12. I realize that, I meant a "rebuilding team " like the Brewers or Atlanta would be interested in a guy they would just have to stash. (No contender is going to pick up Jones and stash him all year)
  13. Is it possible that a 27 year old Dean suddenly becomes a worthwhile RP while adding some speed, strikeouts etc to an up to this point medicore career in the minors? Sure But I would like to think it would be more possible that a guy who is already striking out 12 guys per 9 innings in the minors could become a worthwhile major league RP
  14. Unbelievable.
  15. You can get #2 type pitchers for less than 6 or 5 years. Iwakuma just signed for 3 years for instance. Also you can TRADE for an ace as well. Also, the Twins have the money to afford pretty much any player they want with the exception of the David Prices and Greinkes. They actively choose not to spend it.
  16. Dean doesn't throw hard though... Also if Dean had a shot to be a RP, why didn't the Twins already convert him? He clearly has no shot at being in the major league starting rotation, so why keep starting him at AAA?
  17. Exactly, people said the same thing when Ortiz was let go as well "this isn't going to matter one bit, Matt Lecroy will equal anything he could do"
  18. Exactly, any team with playoff aspirations wouldn't bring a guy like Jones in, but rebuilding clubs like Atlanta, Milwaukee etc would bring him in.
  19. I did too, I was actually a bit shocked to find out he was still on the 40 man!
  20. If you don't like the thread, or find it "pointless" I would suggest just ignoring it, these sorts of posts just derail a conversation others are having about Jones, and the 40 man roster in general.
  21. RP are really easy to stash, just have him be your mop up guy all year, if you are already losing by 5 runs, it won't matter if he serves up another 3-4. Brewers aren't competing anyways, the 1B as others have said might be hard to stash, then again they did just trade Adam Lind, so they have the roster spot. Plus they are in a full rebuild anyways.
  22. Guys like Dean (and even better) are available at any time off the waiver wire if things go terribly wrong. Dean is seriously like 9th or 10th on the SP depth chart at this point, if things go that horribly wrong the Twins are better off bringing in a Chris Young type off the waiver wire. Listen, Jones may never do anything in the bigs, but his upside is at least that of a "closer" if he can figure it out, you can't teach arm speed and you can't teach strike outs. Dean will likely never do anything in the bigs as well, but his upside is "spot starter"
  23. Wide ****ing Right. The Gary Anderson story.
