  1. Perkins has a lot of injury issues/concerns coming into this season. As far as "we just need one or two good/great ones more" that is kind of hard to do when 15 or so of the top 20 have already been picked up.
  2. Are you sure about that? The overall inaction of the winter meetings thus far and the huge holes that remain (front end rotation guy, bullpen, OF) seem to suggest the opposite, in addition I have read from multiple posters that the Twins window isn't until 2017 or later anyways.
  3. Where does Trea Turner play in that scenario?
  4. Again the main thing is it comes down to upside and cost. The Twins could have gotten Bethancourt without giving up Hicks (A guy they actually could very much use in 2016) Bethancourt also by every measure has a higher upside then Murphy (just look at the propsect rankings and scouting reports) You say the "Twins fixed" the problem at catcher, but it looks like a half ass fix to me since Suzuki will still be getting at least half of the playing time. I would much rather go the route of bringing in Bethancourt and seeing if he can reach his potential as a very good catcher, instead of trading an asset like Hicks for a guy that nearly every scouting report on the planet has pegged as a back up catcher who someday could be "average"
  5. Very true and very well said.
  6. The "Dave rails on every TR move" meme is tired and not true. I have said repeatably how I like the Park signing (assuming they can move Plouffe), I liked the Ervin Santana signing, the original Hughes deal etc. Bethancourt A. Has more upside then both Hicks and Murphy, he was a top 100 prospect going into 2015. B. He put up a .840 OPS in AAA last year, that is more important to me then his OPS as a 16 and 17 year old in the minors, putting up his "overall" numbers is an apples to oranges comparison since he was 16,17,18 in the minors while the other two guys were not. Hicks was drafted out of college for petes sake and his first year in the minors he was 21! Which brings up another great point, Bethancourt is still a few years younger then both guys! So: Bethancourt is a guy who cracked top 100 lists multiple times in his career, as recent as last year, Hicks and Murphy have not. He also is a few years younger then them as well. So yes, this fits right into the "upside" argument I have made.
  7. Well said. I know his "control" problems will be tossed out as a rebuttal, but it's important to note that while yes, he does need to cut down his walks, it's not exactly Shooter Hunt territory here, if he can get his BB rate from a 4.8 down to a 3.8-4.0 along with his 11-12 k/9 rate he has a future in this league for sure.
  8. Yup, its a dangerous game, especially when you are talking about average-ish players like Plouffe or Norris, teams aren't going to wait around for weeks on end waiting to see if they can get the 15th best catcher or 15th best 3rd basemen etc I do think however Hicks was moved way to soon, as the OP notes, there were plenty of catchers avail via FA and the Twins are planning on trotting out suzuki as the starter (or at least 50/50 guy) anyways. Now the Twins have a huge hole in the OF to start the season (unless they want to rush Buxton, or have both Sano and Arcia in the OF opening day, which believe me, is a disaster waiting to happen)
  9. The Ortiz situation is relevant, it provides an example of a time where the Twins let a talented but frustrating 26 year old go way too quickly. Jones was striking out 12 guys per 9 and was an all star in 2015, he had a bad second half but it's clear the talent and the arm were there. Again, they choose to keep Pat Dean over him, will this move come back and bite the Twins in the ass? Probably/Hopefully not, but it will bite them again eventually when they stick with the Pat Deans of the world over the Zack Jones. As far as a lot of ink being spilled, this is the only move the Twins have been involved in in the winter meetings, and it's not like they were connected to a whole lot of "good" players as well anyways to begin with. This is what happens when you do nothing, the little moves/decisions like this get put under a microscope. If they actually picked up a RP during the winter meetings, people would care a lot less about losing Jones (a RP who can strike people out)
  10. Agreed, Bethancourt would have been a great target. Murphy is just more of the same (mediocre player who projects to be a backup or a below average starter if everything goes right)
  11. They (Ryan) also Jettisoned David Ortiz at age 26. Not the same as the rule 5 draft exposure, but in fact 10x worse at the time, and 100,000x worse currently. That move alone cost us a title. You think at some point Ryan would try, just once to keep the upside guy (Jones) over the mediocre guy (Dean). And honestly, I don't mind Dean being in the system, I just don't understand why you wouldn't remove him for the 40 (leave him unprotected) and just bring him back after the draft?
  12. Here is what I don't understand, if you really had no plans on trading Plouffe, why on earth go out and sign a DH in Park? If you don't sign Park, you can easily just slot in Sano at DH for another season. Now you truely have a quagmire as you are trying to force Sano into the OF (while also more or less getting rid of Vargas and/org Arcia as well) If they trade Plouffe, I really like the Park signing, if they keep Plouffe around, I like it quite a bit less (unless park puts up a .880 OPS of course!)
  13. But yet they basically gave the same amount to Mike Pelfrey... At some point Terry Ryan will realize that if you want to sign GOOD relief pitchers you have to commit multiple years. Hasn't signed one to more than one year in 17 years, I'm hoping some day he will see the light.
  14. Time will tell
  15. Nick, what are your thoughts on whether or not it's time for Ryan to step down again?
  16. I think Santana can have a solid career but not as a top of the order bat. Mostly as a super utility (rich mans nick Punto) who can be a stop gap at SS if need be (rich mans Nick Punto)
  17. When you are as replacement level as Dean is, it doesn't matter if you are a righty or a lefty. Jones on the other hand strikes out 12 per 9, the twins don't have a lot of those and haven't had for quite some time.
  18. But again, if that's a numbers game how is Dean not? There also is the chance that Jones could have jumped up that list this year, dean? Not so much IMO.
  19. Lots of strikeouts, but lots of home runs in his cup of coffee last year. Hope he catches on somewhere.
  20. It didn't work, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't if there was a surefire way to "win it all" then every team would do it. Also Oakland going all in was different, they made a bunch of trades etc for guys who weren't around long term, the Diamondbacks have brought in Greinke and Miller for the front of the rotation and they will be around for several years it appears.
  21. Again, I would rather they bring in a guy like Hicks closer to April (when other roster cuts have to be made anyways) but I didn't even realize Dean was on the 40 man roster. So Dean is the one I really have a problem with being on the 40 man over Jones (and some other players as well)
  22. Thanks for digging that up. The crazy thing is not only did the Diamondbacks shell out cash for a player like Grienke, they SET a major league record while doing it. Time will tell if it will work or not, but I would be pumped if I were a Diamondbacks fan right now.
  23. Storen had a very real gripe about that, he was pitching well and taking him out of the closer role effects his arbitration numbers rather significantly. He had every right in the world to gripe, especially when Papelbons salary was already set regardless of closing or not. (The Nationals as a whole were a disaster last year anyways)
  24. The Diamondbacks had the 6th lowest payroll in baseball in 2015. They have ranked in the bottom half 80% of the last 10 years, and the last time they were in the top 10 was in 2002.
