  1. I'm not sure "any team" would claim him. Agreed 100% on this. Apples to Oranges comparison. Sort of like if the Nationals trade Papelbon + 8 million for some scrub, that doesn't mean Perkins would receive the same offer.
  2. TR and co can talk about "we value strikeouts now" until they are blue in the face, but when you are keeping around 27 year old, sub 5.0 k pitch to contact guys (sub 2.0 BB )guys who will never be anything more than AAA filler it's hard to take that as any more then just empty talk.
  3. Yes, but why risk it to begin with?
  4. Pat Dean has a career 4.9 k/9 in AAA, why on earth would we want another sub 5.0 guy in the pen?
  5. WAR is pointless when talking about RP As far as other stats that look bad: his ERA has been pretty mediocre the last 3 years, and his k rate has dipped from 10, to 7.2 to 5.8 in that time as wel, that to me is a clear sign of decline. Also this isn't Jones would take over for Fien,I would rather have any of the 10 or so RP signed thus far then Fien on the major league roster, in addition, I said I would have rather not protected Pat Dean, Nunez or Hicks as well.
  6. Yeah Dean seems especially redundant in this org, he is pretty far down on the list of "SP" options at the major league level. I doubt he would even be selected.
  7. Brett Lawrie has some attitude issues and the A's were going to trade him for anything, I wouldn't read too much into the return.
  8. That was PRIOR to 2015, besides the Twins farm is much greater than the Mariners. In 2015 Jones was an all-star In 2015 John Hicks hit .083 in the majors (SSS) and had a .645 OPS in AAA
  9. Why risk it? Why risk it over a sub replacement level player like Hicks? Again Mediocrity > Upside on one Twins way. This same line of thinking was what lead to choosing FatBeer over David Ortiz fwiw.
  10. How on earth do Vargas and Arcia have more trade value then Plouffe? Arcia was a mess last season and Vargas has AAAA written all over him.
  11. I can play this game as well Remember, Remember the release of David Ortiz. Now back onto something relevant, I saw John Hicks play, I watch a lot of Mariners games and follow that org pretty closely, he isn't good. He is below replacement level, you absolutely can get below replacement level players at anytime off the waiver wire if you need a third catcher at some point. Or, I dunno, maybe wait until closer to the season starting to actually clog up a 40 man roster spot with a third catcher, at some point at least one of Nunez, Vargas, Arcia, Santana will have to be released anyways due to roster crunch, why not wait until then to pick up a scrap heap 3rd catcher?
  12. Santana is younger, Santana is cheaper, Santana is more versatile, Santana has more upside. Nunez likely won't be able to repeat that batting line anyways. Don't get me wrong, Santana has been a frustrating player as of late, but the talent exists, he is still only 24, and has had some success in AAA and in the majors (2014-luck driven or not) with the bat. I also think he can be better than Nunez at SS, 2B and CF which is what I look for out of a SU guy.
  13. I wouldn't trade Rosario in the first place. I never would have traded a perfectly good CF in Hicks for a backup catcher to begin with either. I never would have forced a square peg into a round hole (Sano to the OF) to begin with either.
  14. You absolutely do NOT need a 3rd catcher as of today on the 40 man roster, at any point you can go sign another Fryer, Hermann or John Hicks off the scrap heap, play them in AAA and if they are ever needed you can assign them to the 40 man at that point. John Hicks is a bad baseball player, he is below replacement level he does nothing well. Having him on your 40 man in December is pointless. Zack Jones strikes out 12-13 guys per 9 innings, he has his warts no doubt, but those type of guys don't grow on trees, no hit, no field catchers? We can find them anywhere. As far as Nunez goes, if you are going to keep him around on the 25 man roster, then you are essentially going to lose at least one of Santana, Vargas, or Arcia. Once again, poor roster management.
  15. If he is hitting 40 bombs a year and posting a .950 OPS I could really care less about his weight, he shouldn't be running down fly balls in the OF anyways, and especially shouldn't be forced to do it because he is "blocked" by a league average player like Plouffe.
  16. The Matt Capps trade proves my point, teams were overpaying for closers back then via dollars in free agency and via trades. This is nothing new. There has been more focus now on "set up men" due to the Royals success, but Closers have been in hot demand for more than 10 years.
  17. Guys I would rather have Jones on the 40 man roster than: John Hicks: Yet another no hit catcher who has no real future in the bigs. Fien: replacement level RP who can't strike anyone out. (Not cheap anymore) Nunez: Why is he on the 40 man anymore? Santana can be the new super Util The Twins 2016 tagline might as well be "Mediocrity > Upside"
  18. Having someone take at bats in the majors while they are clearly outmatched is not a wise choice. Buxton was completely over-matched last year in the bigs. Unless he shows some serious improvement against major league pitching in spring training, starting him day one is a recipe for disaster not only in his development but for the Twins ability to actually win baseball games.
  19. Did we learn nothing from Hicks first couple years in the big leagues? Rushing a guy up to the majors whose bat is not ready is a recipe for disaster for their development and confidence.
  20. Honest question, if it wasn't a surprise to the Twins, why did they leave him unprotected? Frankly I would have rather had Jones in the org still then Fien locked into a bullpen spot.
  21. So we have a guy who actually wants to continue to get better, play more baseball, work on his swing, his 3rd base defense etc in the offseason, instead of shutting him down we should be commending him for his effort. Instead, poor roster management has lead us to shutting him down so we can monitor him for a diet in order to have him be something he is not (an OF)
  22. You can actually do both 1 and 2 at the same time. The Twins have a very deep and very talented farm system, trading a few guys from it can help you immediately while not hurting your future chances in the least.
  23. I will give Terry Ryan this: he is really, really good at wanting good players. Where he fails is actually signing good players or trading for good players.
  24. It is more than likely that neither Buxton and Kepler won't be ready for the Majors until June or later. What is the plan until then? Just roll with Sano+Santana+Arcia in the OF and lose every game 10-4?
