I have not listened to the podcast yet so I may be missing some info because I don't see any point in going after a DH and/or infielder. That is not to say that those spots could not get better. I feel they need to go after pitching and only pitching and then embrace platooning. With Willingham, Ploufe Colabello, and Parmalee I see know reason to go after more corner OF/DH-type guys because those types of players are always available and all of the Twins focus needs to be on pitchers. SS is not the same story but I just don't get focusing on that now until the pitching staff is in order.
The idea that this may happen is not unrealistic given the history. At the same time, to call that a "victory" is to be content with losing 90+ games...again. This is not ok and the fan base cannot be ok with it. Better than recent history does not equal good and although it may set me up for let down, I am hoping for more. Of all the write ups so far I felt that Thrylos nailed it the best. Different from his ideas I would be content with one multi-year and two single-year deals; like Kazmir for a 2-3yr deal and Baker/Johnson for one each. If they only sign one guy then the fans need to go nuts.
Did you say specifically how many years you could look for in the contracts? I am guessing you would go 2 years for kazmir and one each for Volquez and Johnson. What I like there is that Volquez and Johnson, if they do well, could be attractive at the trade deadline. The team could get great return (think Sulbaran) on investments in them. And, if they go then you have people like Diamond and Worley at AAA who have hopefully figured out some things by then.
Thanks for all the work on this, Seth. I enjoy reading the info. What is your best guess on Kepler's stat line in 2014? Do you care to make a prediction? I may be getting caught up on stats vs his potential because his last 6 months are a little concerning. After coming back from injury he did not seem to hit that well and in AZ he is doing ok. I understand that its about potential at his age and the AZFL is a league that is full of more advanced players. Additionally, nobody who is in the know (I am not one of those people) seems to be concerned. That said, do you feel he is due for a full season of more impressive performance?
If they could get him for a deal that left room to comfortably walk away (think Marquis) if it did not work then I think this would be a good move. A concern would that the section of MN fans who are searching for things to be negative about would chew this to pieces. Ryan may not have the credibility to sell a move like this. If Baker came in and gave 2011esq numbers and was able to go 175 innings it would be a giant difference. What would be a the contract? One year at 4.0 million?
The inverted W name is funny. Why not just call it an M? I think you are right. I think the high elbow in the throwing arm can cause a violent snap when coming through and can lead to issues because of the elbow stress.
Preparing myself to get pounded for this.....Baker? I have been reading the blue prints that have been put out like Shane's and those in the handbook. There are second-tier pitchers listed on each. One bigger acquisition and one lesser guy. Could Baker fill that spot for 2 years? He is 32. He has not had real stress on his body for 2 years. Provided that is back in shape and the arm is ready I think he would stack up well to people like Messenger, Capuana, Kazmir or Brett Anderson who have been mentioned in some plans. In 2011 he had 8.2 k/9, 2.1bb/9, and an era of 3.14 in 21 starts and 134 innings. I am not suggesting that he be the man. I am putting him in the secondary-acquisition place where the others above have been mentioned.
I am of the opinion that Mauer could play any position on the field and I think you are reaching a lot. He is 30 and it takes time to learn new positions. Also, we have the #s 1 and 3 prospects in the world on the way at those two spots so there is no reason.
Agreed! That outfield will catch everything and if they struggle at least we are watching those with a future try to figure it out vs older guys who will not be around for long. Pinto, Buxton, Hicks, Arcia, Sano, and Rosario have to play.
Thanks Shane. Solid work. One part I really enjoy about your plan is the flexibility in the lineup. I love that you list a RHP/LHP-pitcher approach that includes a players place in batting order and whether or not they play that day. One of my hopes for next year and beyond is that our club embraces platooning. I agree with the FO that its not the ideal but if that gets the best possible production out of our current team then it must be. MUST.
Is this simply case of being over matched due to the AFL being hitter-rich and that he is used to A-ball talent? Dude was dominating in the FSL so one would not think it would be this bad.
This is fun to read. I like all the thought you put in it. I am surprised that in your plan and in the comments that trading Perkins is not mentioned. I would have him on the block constantly waiting for the right offer.
Brock- nice point on Tampa. That is something to think about. Question for the group- Why is May getting so little playing time? Have I missed something? He has 1 start and has appeared in 3 games for 5 total innings. Jones and Achter have more innings than May. It seems like he should have more time on the mound or why go?
I don't have a issue with the exposure Gibson got in the majors last year. My expectations were level so I see it positively. He was still recovering from TJ and control is always and issue. I expect 2014 will be much more solid for him. The toughest part about Meyer is that so much hope is pinned on him and control issues can ruin it so quickly. Example: May gets very little attention in comparison because he walks so many people.
I posted in this way on another thread so please forgive the repeat. Here is some extra info: Meyer on 10.23- Inning one- 16 pitches and 3 of 4 first-pitch balls Inning two- 25 pitches and 2 of 5 first-pitch balls Inning 3- 11 pitches and all first-pitch strikes Inning 4- 8 pitches and 1 of 3 first-pitch balls. (one batter picked off 1st) Inning 5 (1 out) - 10 pitches- 1 hbp on a 1-2 count and one SO with 1 of 2 first-pitch balls. That is about 16.1 pitches/inning and that pace would have him to nearly 100 pitches by the end of the 6th. It is too much. I know this is only one game but from what I have read this seems to be his historical issue. We saw the same thing with Gibson last summer. Often he was done by the 5th or 6th with a pitch count at 90+. I hope they can fix this and show some better control. I don't mean to say they need to serve up the first one but they will not be successful if they are constantly behind in the count.
This morning a friend passed me this link. Look it over and then click the second picture and a short video will play. I will bet this will get a lot of coverage today. Y! SPORTS
I watched online also. The first two innings were really bothering me. There were a lot of first pitch balls and I think he was over 40 pitches in those two innings. The first pitch balls surely led to the lower SO numbers because he could not be aggressive and bring SO pitches. Again...I am watching this on a computer screen so please keep that in mind. The fact that he ended up at 70 when the first two innings went that way is a positive because he settled down. A 1B pickoff did hurt either. I hope his control is solid by spring. It would be nice to see him for most of 2014 and that won't happen if he is throwing 20 pitches an inning.
If it unfolds as Brandon describes then this lines up very well. If the Twins lose out because their attempt/offer stinks it will be incredibly hard to stomach. Like Nick stated, they would be rolling the dice on a guy entering his prime and not a 30ish FA. It could be such a huge acquisition to help bridge between this current team and the line up the Twins should have 2015 and beyond. If he worked out he could help make them relevant faster and rejuvenate the fan base. Come on....one time.
It is not hard to understand at all. I was clear on that before this thread was posted. You said, "He hardly has any value if you move him somewhere else." This I do not understand. Early in this thread I said, "His career hitting numbers vs the 1B numbers from the whole league this year would have him 1st in Avg, 2nd in OB% and 6th in OPS. Not to mention that I feel he could step in and contend strongly for a gold glove right away. I'll take it." If that makes him not a HOF player then that stinks but vs not playing due to injury I would prefer he spend most of his time at 1B putting up those numbers.
