  1. This genre is always only as good as the villain. The fact that they got Michael Keaton gives me mucho high hopes.
  2. Hey, we're all outsiders looking in. Many times even in our own culture. I can't count the number of times I've looked at posts on this very site, where the culture is Twins baseball, and had absolutely no clue about what I was reading. And yet we all have a lot of shared background in this culture. How difficult then to begin to relate to something completely different.
  3. This is basically the point of statistical analysis, i.e. drawing conclusions from aggregate data. Reading this thread I still see a lot of everyone trying to defend and cling to their own points of view without really giving an inch. That's when this kind of issue becomes an intractable hot mess. Maybe we should try a little roleplaying taking the other person's view and see if it does anything to inform our own. Again, this applies to everyone equally.
  4. You mean SI does something besides swimsuit issues?
  5. July 7th.
  6. I think as long as people keep trying to win the thread it will be less useful than it might otherwise.
  7. Just picked up Curiosity Stream and while they need to build up the volume of content, they are doing it right. Think what Discovery and History Channel used to be before they turned into trash. We watched shows about Stradivarius and violin crafting and Medieval knighthood as samplers. Then because it's our anniversary and we already went out yesterday we put on Pete's Dragon on Netflix. Because sometimes you just need to feel like a kid again. Baseball used to do that but not so much anymore.
  8. Second best idea I've heard all day.
  9. Maps of the islands...
  10. I just heard of the amazing Henrietta Lacks and am starting to read her story. http://rebeccaskloot.com/the-immortal-life/
  11. I think the Defenders has already wrapped production for a summer release, with The Punisher coming near the end of the year. I was disappointed with Iron Fist, and expect a lot from Defenders.
  12. Caligula had a pretty good time in office to begin with, too. Right up until the Praetorian Guard and the Senate offed him.
  13. Ask a native Japanese and a native Chinese what they think of one another. Or a native Ukranian and a native Russian. The list is long, global, and predates the existence of the United States. But yes, colonialism ratcheted things up. A lot.
  14. I believe the argument is that racism does more harm when combined with a position of power.
  15. More or less the entire species.
  16. Huh. I just bought Joni's version of Yellow Taxi on iTunes this morning. Oh, and Surdyk's has a sale going on, so more Maker's Mark for this free man in Paris.
  17. That's a dangerous position you're espousing. Likely an incorrect one, as well. https://www.britannica.com/topic/social-Darwinism
  18. So do I. But like it or not, they still have to coexist with the other kinds.
  19. No, life is not a zero-sum game, like baseball. It's more like The Prisoner's Dilemma, or The Volunteer's Dilemma. This is part of the reason people enjoy sports they don't actually play. It's clear cut; somebody wins, somebody loses. It's also part of the reason why sports are a poor metaphor for life.
  20. Discussions like this always bring me back to this line... “We’re human beings with the blood of a million savage years on our hands! But we can stop it. We can admit that we’re killers . . . but we’re not going to kill today. That’s all it takes! Knowing that we’re not going to kill - today!” Same-same with racism. I'm racist, that's the culture I was born into, and I fight it every damn day. Knowing that it won't own me - today! That's all it takes.
  21. A convention of morticians.
  22. Could be time to take the rhetoric down a notch, peeps.
