    This has come up several times from several posters, and IMO misses the point. I don't think anyone is saying Polanco is better than Dozier at the moment, and it's fair to question even whether his ceiling is as high as Dozier is at now or will remain for a few more seasons. The right question to me is Dozier versus Polanco + whatever we get in return for Dozier If trading Dozier (plus whatever prospects I would have to package alongside) were to net us a major league ready pitcher, we would survive whatever dropoff at 2B resulted. Ditto for a real upgrade at catcher, assuming my scouts aren't sticking to their guns about Murphy profiling as better than a backup at this point. I realize a stud starting pitcher doesn't grow on trees, and isn't willingly parted with by any team. Good trades are hard to put together - anyone can slap together two pitching prospects and get someone's bullpen piece. It's what I would focus on, anyway, and I would look at Dozier as the centerpiece for a team in need, plus any and all prospects outside of my top several in order to pry loose what I want. We have quantity in the farm system, we need to upgrade to quality with two or three key trades. Now I'm repeating myself. Here's a non-repeat: it comes down to trusting your own scouting and your own talent evaluation; if that trust isn't justified then you are engaging in Brownian motion, and in the long haul will come out behind. This is supposed to be Terry Ryan's strength as the old scouting director. I challenge Terry to close his career with a bang, by making some trades his successor will value.

    I trade away whichever gets me the least value. Unless my own scouts tell me the other team is crazy. Because, I am in talent acquisition mode, not talent distribution mode. Trading the best among options is how we gave up on Garza instead of Slowey or Blackburn. A smart team offered more for Garza, and we snapped it up, cackling all the way home at our good fortune. I also don't need to make it a one for one trade. I trade the less valuable second baseman, plus a pitching prospect I'm not totally in love with, for a pitching prospect I do love, if one is made available to me by a team in need at second. Or I send Turner plus the second baseman for a stud catcher, if that other team likes Turner well enough and needs help at 2B. Et cetera. The second baseman has to be the key to the trade for the other team, since that's our surplus, but then we sweeten the deal at the position the other team's giving up, plus perhaps another prospect in the 20s on our ranking.

    Yeah, you can't pay guys decent hourly wages when you can't possibly predict how many hours they'll work. Why, some games go 10 innings, sometimes 11... what's to stop one from reaching 9999? And I've seen a single half-inning go 30 minutes, maybe 45 - someday one might take all day and a half. And how about them rain delays? Minimum wage alone would bankrupt the league if a perfect storm (pun intended) of such events were to happen.

    He was not released. Being "Designated For Assignment" gives his team 10 days to decide what to do with him. Which... they eventually did, when they announced they had traded him.

    Quick look around the top of the current standings, for teams who brought a GM from outside rather than promote from within. Baltimore has had a decent turnaround under Duquette; he was brought in on November 11 2011. Dodgers brought in Farhan Zaidi from Oakland on November 6 2014, right after bringing in Andrew Friedman as president on October 14, 2014. The Cubs brought in Jed Hoyer on October 26 2011. Theo Epstein joined the Cubs (different role) October 21 2011 - previously he had been named Boston GM on November 25 2002. That's where I stopped my in-depth research, because it confirmed my bias. I'm fine with the message that Ryan is due for replacement, and then reserve judgement until the early offseason. I'm not fine with an insinuation that there's a problem if he's not summarily fired in-season.

    I have a chance to go see a game in the Cape Cod League this holiday weekend. Has anyone here been, and got any tips to share? I see that they don't charge admission to the games (though apparently they do take donations!), so does that imply the crowds are never an issue? Or does it pay to get there early and reserve a good seat? Are there typically concession stands, or do we need to plan to eat an early dinner before getting to the ballpark? (Probably going to Falmouth, in case that matters, or else somewhere else on the upper- or mid-cape.) BTW, I married well. When we hatched the plan to do the 4th of July weekend on Cape Cod, I didn't think about a ballgame until just a couple of days ago. I asked Mrs Ash last night, "ever heard of the Cape Cod League?", and her eyes lit up and she said "we have to go!"

Bruno had an OPS+ of 114 in short service at California, then 129 as a 21 year old for Minnesota. Hrbek's OPS+ was 85 in a few games as a 21 year old, true, then was 128 in a full season the next year. If he's trying to draw a parallel to Buxton's 56 and 46, at age 21 and 22, or Barrios's ERA+ of 44 at age 22, well... just stop talking, Jim. You're not making me hopeful, you're making me discouraged.

    Moderator's note: we try to keep this forum area, and this thread in particular, under only a light moderation touch. But this kind of antagonistic approach to discussion can't be tolerated, not even here, and won't be. From any side of the debate. (And anyone who feels this principle needs to be discussed in its own right, for the umpteenth time - take it to the appropriate forum area.) A genuine interest in knowing what another side believes can be phrased in a hundred different, and more agreeable, ways. And if it's not genuine, then just state your own belief, without at the same time calling into question the reason or the humanity of someone who might disagree.

But with regard to Sano, last off-season when the discussion was whether he would be moved to RF, one of my arguments against that being seriously considered by the FO was the shakiness I had seen from him on infield popups. That seems like a skill (or lack) that would carry over to the outfield, to judge balls in the air. He's good at coming in on slow rollers and firing to first for the out, but he's shy of the ball hit hard at him, not reliable on balls hit to either side, and now we have further evidence of the adventures when the ball's in the air. That said, I'm all for moving him back to third from right. But fans had better be prepared for below MLB-average play at the position, for a season or two at least.

    Dunno. Our 25-52 Twins have 85 games to go, right? On July 7 1914, an off day, the Braves stood at 28-40. They went 66-19 their last 85 games. If the Twins can do that, they'll finish 91-71. Maybe a sniff at the playoffs, but surely not first place. They're starting from a deeper hole than those Braves ever were in.
