  1. I imagine the Benghazi committee will get right on this needless loss of life. / I'm not actually in favor of second guessing this operation, which I am confident was put forward in good faith by mostly the same military team that advised Obama until the end. The Bin Laden operation came within a whisker of a negative outcome, after all, not that any two operations are totally alike. Edit: I see that Mike ninja'ed me on this POV.
  2. Compare and contrast with this appearance by a president at the prayer breakfast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxBdzH66wZo He can be a gifted comic speaker, but at this venue it's hard to find any wisecracks from him, and certainly none at someone else's expense. He stays on-topic. It is utterly beyond me that Republican religious voters don't ever slap their foreheads and say, damn, I voted for the wrong guy again.
  3. My grandpappy's birthday! He's been gone more than 50 years, so it's a little late to send him a card.
  4. I thought about adding that I hoped my post didn't look bad in retrospect, in a few months.
  5. As of today, Iran is "on notice". Dean Wormer would never have taken such weak measures.
  6. This is literally the easiest problem to solve in the history of mankind. Put bacon on top of it. Problem. Solved.
  7. Of course there were assumptions. You can't design a simulation without building some in. Do you have a link to a page describing the study?
  8. Something they were counting on in a subsequent pick didn't occur, and a trade opportunity fell through.
  9. That study must have some strange assumptions. The reason to hire the high-OBP guy is to provide RBI opportunities to his teammates, who presumably have the high SLG that's being wasted. If your team is low-OBP and low-SLG, that's the problem, not the new guy.
  10. Well, that's probably hyperbole by a smidgen. The past weekend they pulled in 6X a normal weekend, according to their press release.
  11. Trump and his pals continue with the rookie mistakes. Just waiting until his AG was in place would have done a lot toward making this travel moratorium a one-day kerfuffle. They can't really have thought time was of the essence on what is largely a PR move.
  12. Myjah's analysis, on TwinkieTown: "Why didn’t the Twins just pick Haley first, if that’s what they eventually ended up with? It’s a fair question, but one that probably makes more sense with 20/20 hindsight. The Twins could have originally planned to do something else, but the way the picks fell, that plan didn’t pan out. We really don’t know the full story." http://www.twinkietown.com/2016/12/8/13882710/twins-get-pitcher-justin-haley-lose-catcher-stuart-turner-in-rule-5-draft
  13. I understood the reasoning too, in the sense that it was expressed in complete sentences with subjects and predicates. I did not understand how they could fail to take into account how much more valuable a good starting pitcher can be than a bullpen arm, if you develop one. I also did not understand how they could take seriously the idea they were in a pennant chase. Yes, embrace a bluebird season when one comes along; acquire a relief pitcher like Jepsen, for PR purposes, sure. (Although paying with any kind of starting prospect exceeded my own threshold of PR value.) But keep a clear-eyed, not-for-publication view of the actual state of your rebuild, and don't jeopardize an actual piece of your future who is already acclimating to his important role in the rotation. This didn't look clear-eyed, and more like they were caught up in the hype too. I understood, but I didn't.

  15. I don't know if you have capacity to fix your content, but there is no player in the Twins organization named Trevor Hildernberger. The misspelling appears twice, BTW, so fix both while you are at it.
  16. The Tea Party and the Koch Brothers are joined at the hip. And Mike Pence is the Koch Brothers' man, 100%. They are too smart to do it in the first month of the president's term. But some kind of unholy alliance of Warren-wing liberals and Koch Brothers sympathizers could wind up being what brings Trump down. I just hope the former truly sees a Pence presidency as preferable, if that's the route they choose, and that they have a realistic plan for dealing with the outcome. Because I can see Pence being the one to really consolidate what this fluke election outcome has started.
  17. If Sano's profile as a third baseman had been that he was poor at coming in on slow rollers but showed flashes of brilliance at tracking pop fouls, then I might have agreed that an experiment in RF, which would still play up a strong arm, was worth trying. His actual record at tracking popups raised a red flag from the outset about being able to track fly balls very well either.
  18. We would all like to have guys for whom 40% of batted balls in play fall in safely. Unfortunately, this is not a repeatable level of ability, for practically anyone.
  19. This armchair-GM is taking May as a reminder that starting and relieving require different and non-transferable abilities. A reliever is not simply a guy who lacks one or two of the necessities for starting.
  20. PM Trudeau has forgotten that either you are with us or you are against us.
  21. Fixing grammar in a Riverbrian post is like repositioning the nose to be between the eyes in a Picasso portrait.
  22. Who had Barbara Hale?
