  1. I would have guessed this was pure hyperbole, but actually his splits are just as you suggest. Bases empty he bats .103, but in RISPy situations he's batting .280 with plenty of additional value leading to a .875 OPS. Either of the Ed's or Joe do well with runners on, too, but Bob's surprisingly been no slouch. It's all small sample size, but still. Will The Real Bobby Wilson Please Stand Up! (And I hope it's not One Oh Three Bobby.)
  2. The best of the best, Hall of Famers and the like, reach the majors around 20. If you push a prospect to the majors, maybe he'll stick. QED.
  3. Likewise, just to be clear.

    Lollygagging?

Yes, it was the first few steps, before the ball was caught, that I focus on, not at the end when he eased off. The runner was leaning the wrong way, and it looks to me as if Dozier had a chance if he'd been going full tilt at the start. There was that tell-tale attempt to accelerate partway through. It said, "oops," to me. At first I thought Polanco was trying to stifle a smile because of his own fine play, in the name of maintaining a game face. But later I wondered if he was annoyed that there was no one to throw to when he thought of trying for a DP. I do appreciate the opposite viewpoint, though. I might always be wrong on these little things, and probably the best Dozier could do was make it close.
  5. Just as I suspected. No one actually attends these things. John Bonnes just sits at the back of the bar getting drunk as a skunk, and then writes it off on his taxes next April as a "Business Expense". I see now why Seth placed the word events in quotes.
  6. Fastball, curveball, changeup. The latter isn't scouted as any kind of plus pitch, as yet. At age 25, not sure what the prognosis for it would be - pitchers constantly tinker throughout their careers. He's had success in limited usage in the majors this season. I suspect a batter has to be at least aware that a third pitch is in his arsenal.
  7. He's probably headed to the majors faster than if he had gone to college.
  8. I'll have to check with fellow moderators and see whether that's a universally held view.
  9. Ah, Spring Training, always nice to read the feel-good stories from Ft Myers about how har-... wait, what?
  10. I agree. There are one-on-one matchups to be watched in football and basketball, but coaches have the option to switch off or double team at any time. You can't double-team your opponent's ace pitcher with your lefty-righty outfield platoon taking up their spots in the batter's boxes simultaneously - they'd knock each other's heads off on a high fastball down the middle!

    Lollygagging?

I happened upon this nice leaping stab by Polanco from a few days ago: https://mediadownloads.mlb.com/mlbam/mp4/2018/07/03/2224124283/1530583378940/asset_2500K.mp4 Question: on a ball hit to the left side, does Brian Dozier have anything better to do than make a beeline for second base, on the small chance it's caught and they might try to double off the runner? The runner has to change direction, Dozier could have been close to full speed by that point. Seems like he was napping there.
  12. Nine times out of ten, these 50-50 chances never seem to work out.
  13. Oh yeah! I totally forgot to mention that phase of my life. Switching from slow-pitch to 90-foot basepaths just about killed me, first time I had to leg it on a slow roller in the infield - expected to be safe and was out by 15 feet. Anyone here ever watched the Quicksteps play in the Twin Cities area? They're still around, 20 years later.
  14. That's pretty much the definition of every odd number, Brian. I'm married to a math major, and I checked.
  15. And I was also going to add that the reason Littell's on the 40-man is that it's preferable to losing him via Rule-5. He has enough years as a pro. Once you have your 40-man roster set, that's who you have to work with, during the season when little urgencies arise and callups are needed. That's why Polanco got spotty MLB service for a while. I don't believe they think Littell is quite ready, but he's an arm and sometimes an arm has to be called up for a day. This notion that the front office is mismanaging player options is basically incorrect.
  16. I believe the YouTube URL needs to be of youtube.com and not youtu.be. Thus this doesn't work: https://youtu.be/qWMyWr9_CVo But this does (if I remove the blank): https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=qWMyWr9_CVo
  17. I was promised FUN with numbers. Leaving, disappointed.
  18. 1.) Where are you from? Farm belt. Went to school on both coasts, worked 20 years in Minnesota (where I acquired my rooting interest in the Twins), 20 more years in Nevada, now in the Boston area. I don't know where I'm from anymore. 2.) Age Range? Varies from year to year. 3.) What brought you to Twins Daily? Don't remember, it was within about the first year of its existence. Probably one of my sons pointed it out. 4.) Highest level of baseball/softball played? One unsuccessful year at little league. My teammates used to call me four-eyes, the next year I got glasses and people call me eight-eyes now. Enjoyed playing bad slow-pitch for a team at work for several years. 5.) Favorite Twins Player, and favorite underappreciated Twins player, and if you want, favorite current Twins player? I liked Kent Hrbek. If Brad Radke is underappreciated, he's my pick. Berrios is probably my favorite now. 6.) Favorite non-Twins Daily site/authors? baseball-reference.com 7.) Favorite Twitter follows? Never learned how to use Twitter effectively, it's too random. 8.) Other interests outside of baseball. Trail maintenance, hiking, helping in schools 9.) Favorite part of Twins Daily... Minor league information. The sense of community.
  19. Morrison's a home run hitter, Mauer's not. It boils down to that, plus opportunity. Going into today's game... With no one on base, Mauer's come up 160 times, Morrison 179. Mauer went yard once, LoMo 6 times. With a man only on first, Mauer has had 45 chances, doubled twice, and driven in nobody. Morrison has had 42 chances, doubled once and homered twice, and that one double seems to have plated his guy, for a total of 5 ribs. With all other situations, i.e. at least a runner on second, Joe's gotten 51 chances, hit 3 doubles and a homer, driving in 22. Logan's had 74 chances, hit 3 doubles and 2 homers, and driven in 19. Mauer was on the DL for a while, accounting partly for the difference in PA. He's actually done better, with the fewer RISP chances he's had. No question that Morrison will beat him on solo shots.
  20. In 11 games since June 28, Daniel Palka of the White Sox has continued his slump and is batting .118 on 4 hits in 34 AB. He also had 4 walks, and those four hits all were home runs. So he has a tolerable OPS of .681 in that span, built on a BABIP of .0000! (I went an extra decimal just to show that it wasn't a matter of rounding.) And yes, for fans of Three True Outcomes, he has 19 Ks in those 38 PA. Except for the strikeouts, he is the Anti Ryan LaMarre. Now that they are on the same team, the baseball diamond may implode on itself.
  21. I want arms. MLB.com's prospect ranking for Brewer pitchers: Corbin Burnes Luis Ortiz Freddie Peralta Marcos Diplan Adrian Houser Cody Ponce Caden Lemons Sickels really likes Brandon Woodruff (who no longer qualifies as a rookie), slotting him after Burnes. Doesn't like Houser and Lemons quite so much. Whoever does the scouting for the OOTP game likes Lemons and Ponce a bit; they were both second-rounders in their respective drafts. Peralta's doing well in the majors and Burnes just reached - probably the top four guys are all off the table for a trade of the magnitude the Twins would be talking about. If a veteran-plus-prospect package could pry one loose, I'd go for it. Otherwise, everyone I looked at is either too successful or has too many warts, for a Dozier trade, or especially Escobar. If the braintrust really likes someone far away like Lemons, that would work for me for Rodney, but might be difficult to sell to the fanbase and he isn't mentioned in this rumor.
  22. It's not just the loss of MPH, there wasn't much movement on the ball when I starting paying attention to his bad outings. I thought I saw better movement lately, and I didn't see last night's outing to know if this reversed itself. A DL stint is hardly unexpected, just from the boxscores. Something hasn't been right since the early season. IMO he showed guts - but we'll look back at this as a lost season for him, probably.
  23. But no spunk. I hate spunk. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_yPWyFZEdY0s/TTlHC3FxO-I/AAAAAAAAT3E/HtNfAcdE_h8/s400/mtm-ihatespunk.jpg
