  1. You're not actually following tonight's game, are you?
  2. http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/c/caveman.jpg The Cave man will not be stopped!
  3. I did, but when I reached the front of the line I was informed he hadn't said, "punch". Left, disappointed.
  4. And then the call of LoMos' dinger was so low-key that I almost failed to look up to see it land in the seats.
  5. But we got a home run, some game earlier in the season, and I keep hoping.
  6. Jake Cave makes a play at the wall without crashing into it. Are center fielders permitted to do that?
  7. I'm multitasking at the moment, but Bremer's call of Dozier's flyout to left made me look. Fool me a thousand times, shame on me - that's the saying, right?
  8. Nice RBI single from our most reliable hitter, Rosario.
  9. Nice 2nd inning for my Adopt-A-Prospect adoptee Slegers. And good to see Polanco continuing to rake.
  10. Ushers at the game probably will let you root for whomever you want, but at a sports bar or in my living room, someone rooting against the home team probably will be escorted out.
  11. Personally I'm focusing on this game, which I think we'll take BTW. We have tons of other threads for the Big Picture.
  12. I dunno, man. The dude has a crooked face: A. Crooked. Face. I mean, honestly. I'm not a scout, some of whom prize "the good face", but this guy's seems the opposite.* Kidding aside, I looked around. If the aim is to get through 2018, with someone better at the plate than Bobby Wilson, it ought to be possible to find someone under-utilized at AAA and do a small cash deal, sending Wilson their way as a mentor in AAA. Tony Sanchez is hitting well at Texas's AAA club, KC has Cam Gallagher, Cincy has Chad Tromp. Not big names, but I'd ask my database guys to check what anybody thinks of their glove, and give those teams a jingle. I found it interesting that when I did my little search, Astudillo's name also popped up as someone to try - I don't understand why he hasn't been given a chance behind the dish. If the manager's standards are that high, no AAA backup is probably going to be given a better chance than Willians - a legitimate bat with Wilson's glove probably would already be a starter and thus unavailable. For a longer term solution, I come to probably the same conclusion, and target the guy with the crooked face. * If I'm making fun of a congenital condition or an accident, I'm sorry... but I bet he's heard this before.
  13. I could be mis-remembering, but I think a similar analysis to what I did here also applied that time, only to a greater extent: The team scored more runs than their OPS would have suggested; The team gave up fewer runs than their OPS-against would have suggested; The team won more games than their runs for-and-against would have suggested. It was a perfect storm that month. I enjoyed the wins, and they were "in the bank" as far as contending for the post-season were concerned. But the warning signs were there, to not get used to it. This time, the analysis doesn't suggest to me that things will get better on their own. They have to hit better. They have to pitch better (even better than they have improved, so far).
  14. This kind of thing happens to, or against, all teams from season to season. The Twins are scoring 4.24 runs a game. There are 10 MLB teams below us; average is 4.40. The Twins' cumulative OPS is .705. There are only 7 teams below us; average is .724. If anything, we may have scored a few more runs than we "should" have. You could break down the OPS components, and see similar stories across the board. We're just a weak hitting team. The Twins are giving up 4.70 runs a game. There are only 9 MLB teams worse than this; average is 4.40, as above. The Twins' OPS against is .752. There are 8 teams worse. Unearned runs and FIP neither point to an excuse for the rate of runs scored against us. Likewise, the component numbers are consistent. Despite the improvements compared to last year, we're still a weak pitching team. The pythagorean winning pct would have us at 2 wins higher than our 35-47 record. But pythag looks at runs scored, and as I pointed out, we may have actually scored a few due to good sequencing. We're just a weak team, and if bad sequencing has played a role, it's a small one. You could look for a pattern but I doubt you'll find one that's different from other weak teams; we get shut down by pitchers having a good day, and feast on some guys who are scuffling too.
  15. Oh, sure, he had that gaudy .143 batting average with the Cubs. But, with the Twins luck, he'd probably go into a slump as soon as they acquired him.
  16. That's not wholly wrong, but it's still another form of black and white. Some people need a pat on the back and others need a kick in the butt. Part of the manager's job is to figure out which is which. When a player is scuffling, helping him feel comfortable may be part of the secret to getting him back on track. Your approach is to give the guy a kick in the butt to get him going, next time he gets his chance. It may be that Molitor has not chosen the right approach in each instance. The results certainly are not there for the batters. It has worked somewhat better for the pitching.
  17. This analysis matches the eyeball test regarding the pitching being better. Let the bloodbath begin.
  18. I'm not enthused about Lux. The scout ratings I'm looking at peg him as a poor man's Nick Gordon, which we already have one of - and I'm already concerned about Gordon not sticking at SS, particularly with Polanco's marginal arm there. Trading from our glut at 2B for another impending glut at 2B wouldn't be my preference.
  19. Not possible. José De León belongs to Tampa Bay now.
  20. Danny DeVito ever had a prime?
  21. Based on glowing reports from his previous manager, attitude would be about the last thing I'd worry about with Fernando Rodney. He's a team player. And I don't see how someone accustomed to the pressures of being a long-time closer would have trouble with the pressures of switching roles, unless he was being asked to pinch hit or something.
