Whew, enough qualifiers for ya? All he needed to add was "whose last name begins with the letter A". Almost damning with faint praise there; I'm sure he didn't mean it that way, so it was merely cause for a chuckle.
Not sure. Trades and roster management are two facets of franchise management that seem nearly independent of one another. In this case there should be a plan that connects the two facets, but even if not, I think the trade can stand on its own: we got two prospects of some value that can be debated, and a major-league zero. I'm fine with ignoring the zero. If roster management turns it to a negative, that doesn't reflect on the trade itself.
Oh noes! Then cut him. The trade didn't provide salary relief, but we got a couple of guys, so that's the value with or without Forsythe. I'll never understand why someone's salary makes a difference on 25-man or 40-man decisions in situations like this. Sunk cost, and all that. In the past off-season, the FO office was perfectly happy to pay Dozier the $9M as part of having a shot at contention this year; the contention part didn't pan out, and the cost at this point is baked in.
Doesn't his contract end after this season? If they're not stuck with him, what's wrong if he hangs around? They could even cut him, if it's a sunk cost.
Is there any chance this is different people saying different things at different times? It's difficult enough to get "everyone" to agree on the spelling of Aaron Slegers's last name, much less how to run the team. / edit - Chief ninja'd me slightly with a different focus.
Moderator's note: OK, you'd think I wouldn't have to say this by now to a veteran poster, but DON'T MAKE IT BE ABOUT OTHER POSTERS. Score's not being kept by a panel of judges, and everyone could cherrypick everyone else's posting history for bloopers or bad outcomes, making this Bickerfest Daily instead of Twins Daily. Moreover, this is not a Darvish or FA thread - look again at the thread title.
That is an amount they can easily apply toward a better relief option, instead. I haven't looked at who will be available, but there will be someone. Rodney might be cost-effective by some metric, but there's something worthwhile about being simply effective without the qualifying term, too. Not to mention, being reliable. He's an admirable guy. He seems to be completely unflappable. I still don't want him. I didn't want him when they signed him. I lost some faith in the FO when they did.
Mrs Ash and I actually used to use that routine early in our marriage. Either of us would, when caught in a trivial mistake, rapidly recite, "you're right, I'm wrong, I stink, you're great." We wised up after a while.
Could be. The same "heating up" phrase suggests both are being fed by the same source, who may of course have reasons to do so. Just normal chatter at the deadline, I didn't mean to imply some deeply nefarious shenanigans going on. Mostly I was amplifying the "for what it's worth" tone of clutchhittin18.
A team friendly tweet by a local journalist, intended to motivate the one insubstantial offer they have in hand to a more acceptable level, is my interpretation.
The concussions. He's lost the elite visual skills necessary to read pitches. It takes a long time for the brain circuitry to re-wire, if ever. Mauer still isn't the same, though it's difficult to separate normal aging from trauma. That's my working hypothesis.
Not to be picked on specifically, but the main comment I recall making on any trade this week involved the word "unimpressed". None of the trades has brought back anything yet that looks likely to contribute to a pennant winner. Frankly they could have stuck with the status quo and let this sad season play out the string, to very little detriment or value either way. I wanted the pennant race, too. The team's not giving that to me, and I moved on.
Not to pick on you specifically, but I feel as though I'm watching some Stages Of Grief unfolding with regard to this failure of a season. First comes Denial, then Anger at the front office...
LOOGYs operate in small sample size territory every season. He gave up 0 homers with the Twins, a rate that is unsustainable. The WHIP wasn't lights-out even with lefties. I'll go with the eye test, which had him crapping around trying to fool batters rather than overwhelm them, which probably is wise strategy on his part. IOW, unimpressive. The return is about what you'd expect for a so-so LOOGY.
