  1. I always wondered why batters hit a collective .400 during April. Now I know.
  2. I guess it's not good satire unless it takes in a reader or two.* And that's about all I want to say about that. * OK, the reverse isn't necessarily true.
  3. Three stellar games from Buxton in a row! Kewl!
  4. There were two leeeeetle beeeeety things that Buxton was doing wrong last season. Not laying off unhittable pitches outside or in the dirtSwinging clean through on strikes down the middleOther than that, he was sound. Early spring results probably don't tell us a thing about his eye for the breaking stuff. But apparently when the ball is laid in there for him, he can turn on it. That's a start.
  5. Shhhhhhh! Don't tell the opponents what his weakness has been!
  6. Those naysayers who didn't believe the 5-RBI per game projection to a full season for Buxton must be feeling pretty foolish right about now. The #6 slot in the lineup appears to agree with Buxton. Don't move him.
  7. It probably could have been 4 RBI had Buxton not been afraid of being called out for passing Cron.
  8. Thank you for this tip. I had not heard of it before. After reading just portions of these articles and clicking a couple of the links, my initial reaction is that anything too far out for Paul Krugman is far out indeed. But it's an interesting way to look at government spending, and at the end of the day it does not repeal the old dictum that "markets will clear". You can choose, as a nation, to do things that are contrary to market forces, if you don't like their unfettered results, but you can never decide to ignore market forces entirely - they don't go away on their own .
  9. Based on his stated annoyance with July-deadline deals made by the Twins, it might be that the Twins were in approximately the bottom third of teams he would sign a AAA deal with.
  10. I don't believe anyone is advocating that Astudillo be the one removed from the 40-man roster, and thereby risk being lost, to make room for Marwin. However, once the 40-man is back in balance, Astudillo is one of the choices to be sent to Rochester for the start of the season, because he does have minor league options remaining. (Jake Cave likewise, also Mitch Garver if you really like Astudillo behind the plate.) Because, at that point, you again have to deal with exposing another player to waiver claims, if you try to stash someone at Rochester but they don't have any remaining minor league options - a player has 3 for his career. You might even send someone to Rochester who you like slightly better than a guy you bring north with the big club, because you can try out both if you do it that way, otherwise you are 100% committed to the one guy if you lose the other on waivers. It's an aspect of asset management by the front office. Make sense?
  11. Minor league options matter when cutting down the 40-man list to the 25 active players who are available to play in a given regular season game. The option is exercised but the player stays on the 40-man. If your 40-man is full and you want to add someone, as is our situation here, then someone needs to be either released, or else exposed to waiver claims before they can be assigned outright to the minors, or else traded (presumably for someone not on another team's 40-man).
  12. I've long been persuaded that RBI serves double duty. Run Batted In Runs Batted In RBI either way.
  13. Welcome back, Pat Dean!
  14. Against a lefty the second time, if my scouting eye didn't fail me.
  15. Left-shoulder surgery in October that is forecast to take 6-8 months to recover from. Learned that just a day or so ago. He can bat lefty, and appeared in the game yesterday. I went from wondering if he would be DFAed after the signing of Marwin, to wondering if he should be on the 60-day Injured List (come on, get with the current lingo ), to not knowing his role at all, within a very short span of time. I don't know what the rules are for placing a player on the Injured List, such as when a switch-hitter is available for platoon duty only. I mean, if the player agrees he's injured, no one will lodge a grievance, but what if he insists he can bat lefty against all opponents? Arguably he would not be on a major-league roster with his otherwise marginal bat, without the slight boost that switch-hitting provides, so what are the legalities?
  16. I hope Marwin is better than Niko in the field, because my small sample of watching the latter was painful.
  17. It was a good run. Wait 'til next year.
  18. Same as how we paid Hrbek millions to spend his time fishing. It's the going rate for high-end hobbyists.
  19. If Marwin was a serious 4-WAR candidate we wouldn't be having this discussion. For one thing, Houston would have worked out a contract extension.
  20. Darn. My unpaid front office internship using Out Of The Park 19 lets me down in countless little ways.
  21. Book it.
