  1. > if all is going great, the team can jack up the price of the ticket to whatever the market will pay. Let's say some season, probably not 2013 but who knows, the Twins come out of the gate much stronger than expected and by July the Twins are the hot ticket in town. Tickets fixed-priced at $32 suddenly will command $45 or $80 or whatever, on the open market. Maybe *you* aren't willing to pay $45, but the people who will are pricing you out of seeing games. Scalpers swoop in and buy up as many tickets as they can, pocketing $13 or more per seat. Question is, why should scalpers get that profit, and not the team? I don't know for sure that part of the money will go toward paying ballplayers if the team rakes it in, but I do know it won't go to the players when the scalpers get it.
  2. I went back and re-read the posts in this thread, and didn't see anything quite like *that*. Some pointed criticism, that could be taken as constructive if Brian can eliminate the mistakes. No one especially had "given up" on Dozier, certainly not everyone. I get the feeling that you're kind of bummed out about the whole tone on the board, and if I've contributed any to that, I'm sorry, my brother. (My bit of snark was directed toward Butera and/or carrying 3 catchers, take your pick.)
  3. I wonder if this is the first surgery he's had done on his arm. Probably yes. He sounds like he's on unfamiliar terrain.
  4. Vegas has set these lines so that the O/U is 2406 wins for the league as a whole. There aren't enough rainouts to account for 24 missing wins - I'll take the over. I'll try it again a different way: Vegas says what the people want to hear. Any resemblance to the actual sporting outcomes is coincidence.
  5. RF doesn't seem to be a difficult position to teach. If the handwriting ever becomes on the wall, they can spend his final minor league season doing that, or even half a season, and he'll be adequate, with a chance to improve with further experience.
  6. The pitching ain't too good neither.
  7. I'm sure all Twins fans' thoughts and prayers are with him. Anybody's, really, of course.
  8. I think we're at something of a circular argument. The expertise here is in setting a line that will attract even betting on each side of the line. Period. If that happens to coincide with expert opinion on the actual state of matters, it is beyond just coincidence, it's irrelevant to the purposes of the people collecting the vig.
  9. I got the reference, I'm pretty sure. Spoiler alert, it's this : George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It's not a comedy styling choice I would personally have made, precisely for the reason that someone who doesn't get it will *really* not get it, but then I've been burned by less before.
  10. Well, at the risk of belaboring either the obvious or something I know only superficially, these betting lines are at heart not about getting it right in terms of the reality being bet upon. but in getting equal amounts of dollars to be bet on each side of some line. As long as the dollars are green the sports books really don't care. If you find a betting line at 64.5 wins for the Twins, feel free to take advantage of the strangers you feel are betting on the wrong side of it, because the casino will act as your intermediary and ensure you get your winnings from them without hard feelings creeping in.
  11. I don't know if Bauer is really a comp for anyone right now. There seems to be a wide range of front-office opinion about him, with some teams (CLE evidently) focusing on his huge talent, while others (including AZ) apparently viewing him as something like the second coming of Nuke LaLoosh, breathing through his eyelids or whatever. I think Terry Ryan is in the camp that views makeup and clubhouse chemistry highly, so it's possible that he would not have traded Span for Bauer straight up, in favor of getting Meyer instead. I realize Nuke is a fictional character, so Bauer would actually be the first coming. And like many guys who go their own way, Bauer's not that similar to Nuke in terms of specific traits. Just that he seems to be a handful, for the wrong manager.
  12. This morning three of the articles I tried from the main page (Sano, Pelfrey, Diamond) worked correctly with seeing the number of comments promised. But for Seth's Inf/OF article, the main page stated 15 comments, but when I clicked on the page it then said 11 comments (which was indeed the number that showed up, something that yesterday I could not even take for granted).
  13. I remind myself of that frequently, and sometimes I care, sometimes I don't. You're right that a percentage of around 50% is almost exactly anti-optimal. Unless 100% of my snark quota is funny, which it ain't.
  14. No, in Soviet Russia, tobacco chews YOU.
  15. Usually a memorial is for someone "no longer with us". Do you have advance insight about that, to foster some hope?
  16. No, now I'm blaming it on you, my brother.
  17. Was responding to a tongue-in-cheek posting invoking the name of the old rock band War, with a bit of silliness of my own, that wound up being too much like trolling. Maybe should have gone with "War, what is it good for, absolutely nothin', say it again" instead. I have nothing really against WAR as a handy all-purpose yardstick if it's not taken overly seriously.
  18. I was not in the Twin Cities during the run-up to getting Target Field built, so I am taking everyone's word that this was the message being delivered by the Twins in persuading tax dollars to be expended. But yes, this is behind my expectation for the team. There should be around $100+M budgeted each and every year for the team. I don't want some kind of "we'll spend less this year and then make it up later", not that the Twins are even offering that as an explanation at the moment - if they saved $20M this year and applied it toward 2015 for a $120M budget, then we'd be disappointed when they "cut back" to a mere $100M in a later year. No. $20M saved this year is just going for additional profit, and it's not justified. Budget the $100M, and then in a year like this use it to ease the pain as the other parts of the plan (which I agree with) come to fruition. And I'm not saying "spend for the sake of spending" - use it to acquire free agents that will strengthen the obvious weak spots on this team. The only way I'm mollified is if this supposed flexibility actually gets used later on this season. I am skeptical in the extreme that it will happen, but leave it open as slight benefit of the doubt.
  19. I attended my first Target Field game last summer. Moar Walleye plz. The fried pickles OTOH I could live without. I don't remember what beer I had but additional tasty ones are always desirable. As for the milkshakes from Hrbeks, will they be available in quantities smaller than a gallon?
  20. I'm on board with the re-stocking the minors thing. Completely. What I find annoying is that it didn't have to be Either/Or. No, they could not create a true contender in one off-season by any conceivable means, but (to paraphrase Terry Ryan from another context) the Twins are leaving money on the table for 2013. It's almost as if they see it as invalid to make 2013 better unless it is with players who will also be making 2015-and-onward better, while I would be happy with contracts that expire after 2014 that get us to the promised land.
  21. Kia fembots get a bit protective over their distant cousin. Had to be there, I guess.
  22. WAR is a very overrated stat.
  23. I guess you didn't see that superbowl ad.
  24. 92 wins. Only team in the division with a shot at 100, I guess they could finish below .500 if a lot falls apart but that's true of any strong team.
