  1. Could have said this part in 2013, or in 2012, or in 2011....
  2. I could imagine moderators giving scrutiny to posts in this thread, yes.
  3. Exactly how they'd do it, I imagine. It's the kind of thing that makes it easier to sign quality minor leaguers and give your farm teams competitive seasons, and if it costs the team next to nothing then why not do it?
  4. I don't believe concussions are necessarily that cut-and-dried. I'm sure you're right that he was no danger to himself, otherwise he would never be out there on the field. But a nanosecond lag in reaction time may be the difference between "average major leaguer" and "Joe Mauer" (or Ted Williams, or other players with legendary plate discipline), and I don't think it's silly to speculate that the synapses weren't yet firing at their previous high level. I've never questioned Mauer's toughness or drive to excel, so I'm looking for a better explanation of what I believe I saw in his eyes that first game back, than either randomness on my part or newly re-found determination on Joe's part. But I don't rule out the randomness explanation either. We'll never know, until Joe writes his book, and probably not even then. I'm not sure of the timing, with the weather delay and all, but it appears that Joe hit his HR today after my post. So far, so good, as far as me jinxing him goes. Knocking on wood again.
  5. I haven't wanted to say anything, for fear of jinxing him, but I have to, now that it's been a few days and he's OPSing almost 1.000 (not counting the partial game today). I've only watched one plate appearance by him since he's been back, the one where he drove in the game winner the other day, but when watching him, he looked... different. I decided it was because there was no more of the winky-blinky stuff that I had grown accustomed to seeing from him. He just stood there at the plate and was looking at the pitcher, waiting for the pitch. He also made a really good play at first base to save an errant throw. I'm going way out on a limb here, but I've been saying up to now that he was still feeling symptoms from the concussion, and I'm saying he's now better. Knocking on wood, throwing salt over the shoulder, and all that, but I'm saying it.
  6. One of the childhood gripes my brother always brings up is that not only did Mom buy Big-K cola, but she split the bottle among us 3 kids.
  7. At a Buffet, always eat dessert first, in case a big rock falls from the sky and destroys the restaurant in the next few minutes. You might survive, but you don't want to be saying "Damn it... No dessert again" again.
  8. Schafer is German for "can't bunt".
  9. When asked about the roots of his divorce, Mr. Bombo replied, "it's a complete mystery to me."

  12. Use mayonnaise as the dressing and sprinkle in some bacon bits, and you basically have a BLT if you include croutons.
  13. I think the key to Ricky Nolasco winning games is to never get him a lead. / wait, what?
  14. I assume this to be a typo of some kind but I'm not inferring what you do mean, since you go on to advocate him playing CF.
  15. Apropos of nothing, but... Separated at birth? http://d3k2oh6evki4b7.cloudfront.net/images-006/headshots/8/8c292381_mlbam.jpghttp://i2.ytimg.com/vi/-qv7k2_lc0M/mqdefault.jpg As for the question of what to do with Pinto, I am so far from being able to gauge a catcher's talents that I have to go with the team's brain trust's judgement. I believe his bat is good enough to let him be ML average in RF, say, but obviously he's more of a plus if he can stick at C. Trading him comes down to whether the brass can envision him being a starter on the next winning team. I'm inclined to guess "yes".

    The Game

Everything somewhat came together except for Morneau inexplicably being super logical and all. I decided that "oh, he's Canadian" was enough of a joke to carry his alien-ness. If not for that, coolly confident Mauer would be the better Spock, but then there is no captain of the team - Gardy? Nah. Ryan? Nah. Or I could have brought back college-boy Slowey as Spock, but I didn't think any special chemistry between him and Mauer would make sense. Gardy's a good sputtering humanist like McCoy, but he doesn't consider Morneau/Spock an annoyance. Ryan makes a passable "engineer" of the team as Scotty, but I doubt he's a heavy drinker. More work could make it better, but I liked the idea of making minimal edits (of a story nobody has ever heard of ), and hey, it's only a blog.
  17. At the end of the day, the "number of World Series rings" is still the most telling statistic for starting pitchers. Phil Hughes has one, none of these other bums have any.
  18. This takes the Cubs' mantra of "wait 'til next year" to a whole new level.
  19. ...if you are satisfied with a Replacement Level Domicile.
  20. It's a fun sign from some enthusiastic fans. I can't see knocking them for that.
  21. In his most recent start at home, McHugh invested time manicuring the mound for several minutes, at least twice in the first three innings, in fact requiring the grounds crew to come out and add dirt and tamp down on the pitching rubber both times. Riveting action, let me tell ya. The opposing pitcher for the Jays, J.A. Happ, didn't seem to be having any such troubles finding his footing that evening, in fact probably had the better game... let's see if the mound is better to Collin's liking tonight, or if Pino maybe happens to fall off of it or drop into an abyss that suddenly opens up beneath him.
