  1. Did the cartoonists at that studio ever explain who laid the giant egg that Baby Huey must have hatched from?
  2. It's a common misconception. He contracted a case of ptomaine poisoning at a chain restaurant and haunted the place ever since. http://www.classactionsnews.com/sites/default/files/styles/article_detail/public/field/image/friendlyphoto1.jpg
  3. If we really want inter-league play, let's play NFL rules when we're in their home park, and MLB rules when they are in ours.
  4. I failed to report that Tyler was sent back to extended spring training in Ft Myers at the end of May. Thus his seasonal stats remain as they were.
  5. I've been remiss. Since last report, Felix Jorge has continued to pitch well. Four more starts, at least 6 innings in each, aggregate ERA of 2.93. Opposing batters are hitting only .186 off of him in this span, and only a .580 OPS. However those numbers mask 5 home runs, accounting for a lot of the 10 total runs (1 unearned) scored against him. All in all, his seasonal ERA stands at 2.44. His strikeout rate remains a bit lower than might have been hoped, only 7.3 per 9 innings. But it's shaping up as a very good year.
  6. The month of June has shown somewhat of a turnaround at the plate for young Mr Vielma. So far, he is batting .314, raising his season average to .220. Unfortunately his batting average remains a bit empty, with a few walks but only one double, giving a June OPS of .695 so far. Still, sometimes progress comes in bits and pieces, and the more robust BA is a nice component to start from. His fielding stats look acceptable for a young shortstop, as well.
  7. Alex's June so far has been even better than his previous months in Ft Myers. The 0.84 ERA over 10.2 innings appears to be no fluke, as his hits have been only 0.563 per inning and he has walked no one. For the season his ERA is 1.85. Give this young man a mid-season promotion!
  8. In June so far, JJ has slumped badly at the plate. His batting average is only .159 and he hasn't done enough else to raise his OPS better than .452. For the season, he's at .208 and .617 respectively. He's also not getting time at catcher, playing 1B/DH. All in all, this is starting to look like a lost season.
  9. Thanks for the link. He nailed it. Now we need someone to nail a solution. I got nothin'. I can't raise other people's kids.
  10. If management is serious about the "no scholarships" quote from a year-plus ago, this would be a logical temporary move.
  11. The rules concerning compensatory draft picks were changed a year or two ago, and players traded mid-season do not earn the receiving team such a pick anymore. This largely accounts for the greatly reduced trade interest; a team in contention can't just load up for the pennant drive and then get their investment right back in the form of a young prospect the next June.
  12. This, however, has been said enough.
  13. Phew. Unless the bottom falls out of the season, and unless Big Pelf likewise is on the skids for several starts, you're faced with trading one of the most successful starting pitchers on a team that is in the vicinity of contention for the first time in years. A tough sell to the fan base. Even if analytically it may be the smart move. That has always been the weak spot in the plan to trade from strength in starting pitching. In practice you'll only feel able to trade your 5th or 6th best starter, and you'll get little to nothing in return, especially if there is any salary involved (such as Nolasco). Again, analytically it may be right to trade Nolasco and his salary, and it may fly with your fan base, but you're not going to restock your minor league system by doing it. All that said... I want Meyer up and in the major league bullpen. I wanted him there in 2014, as an introduction to the majors with an eye still toward starting by mid-season or by 2015. If, as discussed above, a middling prospect like Tonkin has to suffer another demotion, so be it.
  14. Back in my Unix/KDE days I kept a shell script named TBIC ("The Boss Is Coming") which brought up a spreadsheet in cases of extreme emergency like this. / for Chief's benefit: "computer stuff, computer stuff, computer stuff". / a computer is a device invented in the 1900s for the purpose of numbing your soul at work
  15. When allowed to, it sorta does. But if say the manager has a role in choosing the opportunities, then often not so much. For instance relievers who rack up large win totals, solely because they are never brought in with a lead. Utility players who are brought in for favorable matchups. Etc.
  16. Stick a fork in Dave. He's done.
  17. I loved how they got all quiet and mumbley after that. Basically, "well, game over, where do you wanna go grab some lunch?"
  18. Chief is the only person allowed to post from here on.
  19. In fairness, those of us watching via an Internet feed might also blame this:
  20. The nominations for jinx goat of the day are piling up.
  21. The other team's... you can't... it doesn't work that...I don't think...
