  1. I have really liked Swarzak's quotes - he was on the post game last night and said he's been waiting for his chance to start again and he wasn't planning on wasting it. Good attitude for him to have. Don't think it will translate to a regular gig for him, but it's been a good showing so far.
  2. Is Swarzak on any kind of pitch count for the game today?
  3. This Trevor Bauer fellow doesn't seem to want to pitch to contact.
  4. You can't spell "efficiency" with Swarz-ie. Oh wait, I just did. Anyway, good start, keep it up!
  5. interesting to see that Fuld and Santana are flipped in the batting order.
  6. Personally, I'd hang onto Correia if there are no decent offers by 7/31. May can take the revolving door #5 spot in the rotation at any time, Meyer can be added if Correia gets moved in August. I'd consider cutting Correia only if he's still not traded by the end of August, just to add Meyer to the 40 Man - though someone else (might) already be moved by then. Can't say it enough times, the return should be someone that doesn't take up space on the 40 Man roster, that's the whole point of trading Correia in the first place, to make room for the younger guys.
  7. Was this Carlos Santana's bunt? On the radio Danny Gladden was fine with it, but Cory Provus questioned why a guy who absolutely crushed the ball in his previous at bat would be bunting in that game situation. It turned out that Santana added a homer and a second double by the time the night was over; impossible to know in hindsight if he would have been better off swinging away. I think if an infield is shifting, the batter should do whatever they feel comfortable doing to beat it - bunting, trying to hit the ball the other way, swinging for the fences, doesn't really make a difference. I also assume that Dozier would not have bunted for a single in the next half inning if Santana was swinging away. In Dozier's case, Chisenhall was not playing in at 3rd, so he just laid down a good bunt for a hit. No one got mad at Dozier, though it was a similar case of taking advantage of defensive positioning.
  8. I know this isn't what you meant but I'd trade Correia for Verlander in a heartbeat. Someone will want to add a guy like Correia, but no one is going to want to give back much value. It will really depend on how low of an offer Terry Ryan will accept.
  9. More room for me! I'm going tomorrow night and I was able to score some pretty nice seats well under face value. I spent many a summer day at the dome in the mid to late 90s these guys are better than those guys. Plus, the atmosphere is much better now. As for today's game, I'm hoping Swarzak pitches better than his last start: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TOR/TOR201210020.shtml
  10. Yeah - as Terry Ryan said - the Twins have to be listening to any offer. If the return is better than what the Twins give up, they should be willing to pull the trigger on just about any deal. The key is how much the Twins value their own players vs. what the league thinks they are worth. There may be offers on the table that are objectively reasonable but don't happen because the Twins or the other team don't think it's a fair return. Guys like Perkins, Dozier, Hughes, Arcia, etc. would probably require the other teams to "overpay" for Ryan to consider letting them go.
  11. The shift that has been used on Mauer plays right into this tendency - the outfield shifts towards left field, and the infield plays Mauer to pull the ball on the ground. Some of it has to be about taking what you're given at the plate, and teams do throw a lot of junk to Mauer on the outer half. Mauer I trust is smart enough to figure this stuff out. I'm curious to see how he comes back from this latest injury. Certainly the back issues and oblique injury can mess with his batspeed - is there a reliable metric to measure if Mauer's bat is slower this year? That can lead to more balls to the opposite field as well. He's flourished in the past by hitting the ball "deep in the zone," it seems to be biting him this season as the ball is not jumping off the bat quite the same way, possibly because the various injuries are slowing his bat down. And then there's the old chestnut that his brain is still a bit scrambled, which is making his reaction time longer - this would also lead to more balls in play going to the opposite field.
  12. In the spirit of the original post, maybe the Twins should keep their options open . . . How old is that kid from Little Big League now? Or, uh, the "Rookie of the Year" kid? He struck out Ken Griffey, Jr. once. Probably still too young to promote those guys from AAA. No walks allowed, just walkers. Say, what is Jamie Moyer doing right now?
  13. then there are those guys that had the misfortune of being the A's or the Blue Jays' 40th man - poor old Brad Mills is getting moved again. Mills might be playing for his 4th organization this year if he gets claimed by another team.
  14. See? if we had kept Solarte we coulda had Chase Headley!!! Just kidding. I think getting a low-minors pitcher (or a low-minors bat) would be a fine return for Willingham.
  15. I think the players to avoid in return are those AAA/AAAA roster filler guys that would require a 40 Man spot. The Twins don't need any more fringe starters in the mold of Kris Johnson or Yohan Pino, nor do they need more Bernier type infielders. Risks that could potentially pay off down the road would be worth it to make room on the current roster(s) for guys that are performing well and deserve a promotion. So, players in the low minors, or guys that were highly rated prospects that have fallen off this year and their stock has dropped would be good targets.
  16. Tomas could be ready for 2015, when the Twins will be in need of corner outfielder again.
  17. Something is better than nothing - if all the Twins do before the deadline is make room in the rotation for May and/or Meyer, that would be a step in the right direction. I'm hopeful for more than that, though.
  18. Maybe not as gut wrenching as Thome in a Twins uni was for White Sox fans to watch. If Morneau joins the Sox and hits a game winner off the flag pole at Target field, well, that's another story. In a playoff race, no less.
  19. Well, the Twins do have prospects coming out of their ears - it wouldn't be my choice to rebuild by trading prospects for veteran starting pitching, but if the line of thinking is that Cingrani is not on the table, wouldn't it stand to reason that another starter from the Reds might be? The Reds are looking to add an OF bat, so they will probably have interest in Willingham. If there is a package with Hammer plus *someone, maybe it turns into a deal in which the Reds get a prospect and Willingham, and the Twins get a ML starting pitcher and a prospect back.
  20. The other Cuban defector free agent OF fits that description better - Yasmani Tomas : http://twinsdaily.com/showthread.php/12132-Yasmani-Tomas-defects
  21. The fact that they are attending the workout at all is news - the earlier reports mentioned that the Twins were "not among the teams that have interest" for some reason. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/rusney-castillo-to-hold-showcase-next-week.html
  22. update: AJ is now a free agent after being released by Boston. He has informed his agent that he still wants to play this year, so maybe a team will pick him up. Seattle, Baltimore, St. Louis all could use another catcher, and he certainly would be a better hitter than most of the current back up catchers in the majors.
