  1. So far so good on that front - he's added a few Ks.
  2. This game is moving along smartly...
  3. Hughes has been a genuine bright spot in this awful season. If the Twins can load up on more pitching this offseason and find another Hughes, it will be twice as nice to watch this team.
  4. I bet Yankees fans talk about Vidal Nuno and Phil Hughes the same way we talk about Vance Worley all the time...
  5. I went to more games this year (10, plus the futures game) than I have since I was a teenager buying the $4 knothole Upper Deck GA Metrodome seats all summer. The Twins won 6 of those games, I count myself lucky to have seen that much success in this season. For a season ticket holder, I'm sure the losing as gotten really hard to swallow. I really enjoyed going to the games and I will be trying to beat my new Target Field attendance record. The silver lining for me is that I should be able to get some cheaper tickets in better locations. I always have the hope that the team will improve, I think realistically it will be 2016 before they are in contention for a playoff spot and 2017 (if they continue to improve) before they are ready for winning a playoff game or two.
  6. Yeesh. Depressing to read the last four seasons in summary like that. This year's team has not been as hard to watch as the two before it, but losing is never fun to watch, no matter how promising the future may be. I think next year will also be bad, hopefully the Twins will not lose 90 games, but I don't see them being dramatically better next year unless they make wholesale changes.
  7. hey, Puckett only had 23 BB in 691 PA in 1988 - If Kennys wants to hit .356 too, it's ok with me...
  8. Yes, I am being a bit overly hopeful about the current team. I did go back and look at the 1990 and 1991 teams, and I think it would be even more impressive if this year's version made a worst to first transition like that team did. The 2014 Twins have been an especially bad "worst" these last three years.
  9. I still think that's about right, though, if you look at 1991 vs. 1990. The 1990 rotation would be not too far off from this year's rotation... 1991 featured several young guys that didn't do much at all in 1990 - Tapani, Erickson, David West would be the current version of Hughes, Gibson and May Add a "mythical Jack Morris - level starter" to the front of that rotation, and things look a lot better. There's no certainty that Hughes, Gibson, May and company would match their 1991 counterparts, but I do see similarities there. The larger problem is that the 1991 rotation was good enough to compete in that era vs that league - a comparable rotation in the current era might be overmatched by the competition.
  10. I see "typically" which is not the same as "always" or even "team policy" It's both parties that are at fault. Management wants to paint Hicks as lazy, I get it. It's not just management's fault - Hicks and management are not communicating with one another. The teams' expectation for Hicks to arrive at a specific (yet unwritten) time is not being met. He's not communicating with the medical staff - that's on both Hicks and the staff. I don't mean to say that it's either side that is the victim or the villain in this drama. I think it's kind of ridiculous and petty that the issue is playing out publicly in this way. Terry Ryan seems to be annoyed by the reporter's question and explains that it's Gardy's job to take care of it. No comment from Hicks in this article. At this point, I wouldn't say anything about it to the media if I were him, they already formed their opinion.
  11. That's kind of my point, though - the 87 team wasn't even particularly good and the Twins haven't been in shouting distance of that for several years now. To get up to that level of competition, the Twins would have to add more than a couple guys.
  12. A National League team would make a trade to acquire Nolasco if they could give up a contract they wanted even less than Nolasco. It would not be a pretty sight, whatever came back to the Twins for Nolasco.
  13. Absolutely, it's a balance of developing in-house and filling in with other pieces via trade and free agency as needed. I think the Twins are due for some of these draft picks to work out, though. All this losing means that they've had several years in a row with top ten picks in the draft. Gibson will hopefully continue to improve, and Buxton, Berrios, Kohl Stewart, Gordon, etc. hopefully will have at least some success. The point I'm making is that there's been some difficulty (either injury, poor development, or poor scouting) that has made the Twins' in-house options less desireable.
  14. No I don't think any of those guys could have a 20 HR, 20 SB season with the defense and OBP that Dozier brings. I think it is an interesting idea and if the trade were to happen I would be excited to see Bautista play half his games at Target Field. Puckett was not only the best offensive player, but played HOF-level defense at one of the most important postions on the field. If Mauer was still catching, I'd say he's comparable. At this moment, I'd take Hrbek (age 30) over Mauer at first base. I think the Twins are missing that elite cornerstone up the middle defender... He's currently recovering from a concussion after playing in AA for the first time... I think realistically the Twins will not be in the discussion for winning the Central division or getting a wild card until Buxton arrives for a full season. They could make some moves and improve to a team with a winning record before then...
  15. Maybe the training / medical staff is still terrible? Pelfrey - out for the season Nolasco - injured most of the year Perkins - shut down, out for the season Pino - out for the season Milone - shut down, out for the season Meyer - shut down, out for the season (not on the 40-Man anyway)
  16. "I couldn't play him if I wanted to" is a pretty juicy quote from Gardy. I feel like Hicks is getting picked on a bit with this article. He wasn't late because the team apparently has no policy for when a player is supposed to report. That seems to be the staff's discipline problem, not Hicks. The communication between Hicks and management is really poor. The fact that they have to print stuff like this is a little ridiculous. The trainer's don't know if Hicks' back is injured or not? Well... isn't it their job to know that? If I'm Aaron Hicks, I'm hoping to play for a different manager next year, regardless of which clubhouse he's "rolling into."
  17. Which guy would have been better? Logan Darnell I think is the only other guy on the roster that isn't injured or already in the rotation.
  18. Yes, that's a big issue and just one of several issues with trying to fill holes on a roster via Free Agency. Ideally, guys like Hicks and Arcia would have been better this year. If the homegrown prospects develop into good players, Hicks would be in CF, Arcia in RF and someone like Joe Benson would be our Left Fielder... Oh well, they can't all be all-stars (or even ML-caliber starters). Some of the players will sign extensions, but some of them will be available in the offseason and/or during the 2015 season via trade if their current team thinks they can't (or don't want to) extend them. Hopefully the Twins can find an outfielder or two that can replace the missing defense from the last couple seasons.
  19. The Jack Morris thing is interesting. I think the Twins are a little more than "Jack Morris" and "Chili Davis" away from being a playoff team, though. The most Jack Morris-y guy I can think of that might be a Free agent this offseason would be Jake Peavy. Not really sure that is a great comp... but maybe? To be like the two Series winning Twins teams, this team would need more power and much better OF defense. I think the Rotation is about right if you add a Jack Morris-level starter (don't know if that player exists at the moment), and the bullpen should be just fine next year. Also, no Kirby Puckett on this team. Joe has put up team leader numbers in the past, but I don't think he's the guy to do it. Which makes the trade proposal for Bautista interesting. I think the Blue Jays might go for it because they do like team control and potential over there (how many options does Arcia have left?), but it creates a pretty big hole up the middle to lose Dozier. He may not be more than a little better than league average at 2B, but that's actually harder to replace than it looks.
  20. Melky's dWAR this season was *only* -1.1 - so if people want Torii, I think Melky is the better option of the two... He's (nearly) ten years younger, is a better hitter, and has played Left Field all year unike Torii, who last played in Left back in the year 2000. in the year 2000 .... It is a moot point though, as Toronto is going to extend a qualifying offer to Cabrera. If he's smart he'll just take their money after what happened to Ervin Santana and Nelson Cruz, who signed 1 year deals for less than the offer they declined; and Stephen Drew and Kendrys Morales, who basically have lost a season each. Colby Rasmus looks like a good fit for the Twins, or yes, just roll with the prospects and try Free Agency in 2016 when there should be a couple options that are better than the current crop.
  21. Steve is Nick's Dad (a former ML Catcher) - maybe just a trasposition? Cleveland has not been terrible, their pitching has been surprisingly good given their youth. I think Francona is a little bit too quick to make a move (ML record set last year for most pitching changes, then he broke his own record again this year). I don't think they have much of a shot in moving deep into the playoffs (assuming they make it), but stranger things have happened!
  22. Yeah, TR does not sound like he's a fan of Swarzak as a starter.
  23. I was listening to that interview too - I don't think I heard Pelfrey's name mentioned even once.
  24. Tony O can get Cubans for the Twins whenever they want some, they just have to meet him in Toronto and smoke them all there.
