  1. Yes I agree, I should have specified that I meant in terms of a pitching coach for the Twins in 2014, some of the hall of famers are set for life money-wise, so they'd have to want to coach for other reasons.
  2. I also think the time that Blyleven has spent as color commentator on Twins' broadcasts could only hurt his chances - pretty much every commentator in baseball starts off with great insight. But over time, they start repeating themselves and/or are toned down by their bosses. Blyleven probably wouldn't say the same things as a coach that he says as a commentator, but I bet the cliches he uses as a commentator would be fuel for his detractors, e.g. "Downward plane," "pitchers are the best athletes," or any of these
  3. I wonder if Famous / Hall Of Fame players are seldom coaches because they don't need the money and they'd rather spend time at home with their families.
  4. I've heard the Yount rumor a couple different times, I would not be surprised if he is on the staff. If they are looking for a baserunning coach, how about Roberto Alomar? Won with Molitor in Toronto, was one of the better base runners of the 90s, Hall of Famer! I think Bruno is the most likely holdover at this point, my uneducated guess is that Vavra and Ullger will not be on the new staff, but who knows?
  5. Candidates I'd like the Twins to consider (in no order): Pedro Martinez Mike Maddux Greg Maddux Ray Searage (Pirates' Pitching Coach; former teammate of Paul Molitor) Cuellar Cardinals' Minor League Pitching Coaches Candidates I would NOT like the Twins to consider: Bert Blyleven Rick Anderson Dick Such Ron Davis Rick Ankiel A.J. Pierzynski Ozzie Guillen WILDCARDS! Jack Morris Brad Radke Leo Mazzone Bill "Spaceman" Lee (come on, how much fun would that be?) Trevor Hoffman Eddie Guardado Carl Willis Rick Reed
  6. Win Games 1 and 5, and save Game 7 ? j/k ; Phil Hughes is pretty darn good.
  7. I'm guessing that Hammel will go to an NL team. My guess is Pittsburgh (they'll need to replace Liriano and/or Volquez). Brett Anderson might come to the Twins, I think he's more likely of the two. Interesting to me is the prediction that Colby Rasmus will sign with the White Sox. I agree that they could use some outfield help, so Rasmus might be the winner of this year's free agency period because there are so few good options out there. I'm guessing his contract will be higher than it "should" be based on his performance this past year.
  8. I think 3B in general has been underrated by HOF voters - Boyer, to me, was one of the great all-time 3B, and deserves a close look by the veteran's committee. With Kaat, I don't know that his pitching stats alone get him in, but if the voters factor in defense and hitting, I think it really improves his case for induction. He was a great all-around baseball player. Tony O, similar to some of the comments about Kaat, has been an ambassador for the game - even though they've been isolated from each other, the young Cuban players coming up today all know who Oliva is, and talk about him they way Clemente is talked about in Puerto Rico - Tony O is a legend in Cuba, even though he hasn't been back in a long time. I think at some point the vote becomes a subjective, gut feeling thing. Especially if you're comparing players to one another. What are the things that separate the very good from the Hall Of Fame? I think several of the players listed offer those extra intangibles.
  9. I think Terry Ryan was going to get an earful whether he calls Renteria or not. There's really no move that can be made at this point that will go without criticism. My guess is that Joe Maddon had designs on a handful of destinations as soon as he decided to leave the Rays, and the Twins were not on that list.
  10. Well, they might want to talk to the now former Cubs manager, Rick Renteria: http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Report_Terry_Ryan_mulling_whether_to_interview_Rick_Renteria103114 I also think it might be a financial thing - as in, they may have tossed some numbers out to Lovullo and/or Molitor (without official offering a contract) and they are waiting for a counter proposal?
  11. Maybe the Twins didn't like the injury history? They've certainly seen him play as much or more than most of the other teams in the league. I'm guessing the Blue Jays will claim a bunch of guys, it seems to be their main source of player acquisition in the last year or so.
  12. Down to .214 now - he did draw 2 more walks - maybe the pitching is just really erratic in the Venezuelan league? He's 2nd in the league in walks, but he's just not hitting the ball... The whole team he's playing on is batting .247 - nonetheless, just one extra base hit for Hicks in Winter Ball, a homer hit early on, is not encouraging.
  13. So; on one hand I think it's very fair to be critical of the Twins for letting talented pitching slip through their fingers, but on the other hand I think the Pirates should get a big heaping serving of kudos for how they've developed and rehabilitated their pitching acquisitions. I agree with Terry Ryan that cases like Worley happen with most teams, not just the Twins. It doesn't mean that it stings the fans any less when it happens to the Twins.
  14. I think of that list, I'd vote induction for Boyer, Hodges (player+manager), Kaat (Defense!), Minoso (more for the "fame" part of the equation), and Tony O.
  15. I think you misspelled Mike Ditka, but yes, If Maddon wins a WS with the Cubbies, he'll never pay for a meal in Chicago again.
  16. I think with the exception of their recent draft pick phenom Gerrit Cole, their whole 2014 rotation was a reclaimation project.
  17. I think the Twins should be given the benefit of the doubt for at least the weekend. And hey, if Maddon's agent is reaching out to teams, but hasn't reached out to the one team that has a vacancy, well, maybe he doesn't want the job?
  18. Will fans be more interested in Molitor or Maddon as manager? Certainly people that follow other teams in the league know Maddon's reputation, a lot of casual fans in MN may be more familiar with Molly. I definitely think Maddon would make a great addition to the Twins organization. I hope the Twins make an effort to contact him and gauge his interest.
  19. Does a manager's salary factor into a potential luxury tax penalty? If a team paid Maddon 10MM a year, would that necessarily have to impact their player payroll, or are they considered to be two separate things for revenue sharing purposes?
  20. Whoa, what's up in Tampa? Even if the Twins can't lure Maddon, maybe they will turn their attention to some of the Tampa bench coaches now?
  21. I bet there are several teams that could use some competition at 1st Base and his skill set in particular should be appealing. It just seems like the Twins are not one of those teams heading into 2015.
  22. It's hard to be patient about this, I feel like the week following the end of the World Series will be when the Twins announce the new Manager. They will want potential free agents (as well as their own players) to know who is going to be in the dugout.
  23. Kepler would likely be safe from a Rule V draft, but would he be able to elect free agency if he was removed from the 40-Man? I'm guessing that he had to be added for a reason, was he coming up on minor league free agency already? I felt that Polanco was added early last year, too, but it turned out that the Twins were in danger of losing him and it also ended up being important to have him on the 40 Man so he could fill in for some of the wounded infielders for a couple cups of coffee.
  24. There's risk in having them play everyday and or giving them a guaranteed roster spot. Signing them without a promised spot is not a substantial risk at all.
  25. That's too bad - I think it is likely that he will be one of the next few cuts from the 40 Man roster. If he had disclosed the injury right away, maybe he would have hit better over the course of the season and been in line for a job out of Spring Training. He's kind of redundant on the roster now that Kennys Vargas is up. So maybe it doesn't really matter at this point.
