  1. Vargas singled, followed by two walks. Fielder's choice scored a pair Twins because of a throwing error. Robinson Scored on a Sac Fly by Rosario.
  2. So, how long can Nolasco get away with throwing an 88-89 4-seam fastball? What was the average speed on his pitches the last time he was really healthy?
  3. nice bounce back inning - a three ring circus Circus Boy update - 3-2 Twins Lead after 2 innings
  4. I like Hunter as the DH, Mauer gets the day off today... Has the ball that Vargas hit last night landed yet? NORAD lost track of it over Hudson Bay...
  5. I think for a team that is re-building (again, still, perpetually), there are such things as good losses and bad losses. For a contender (or, I guess, a Football team), there are only wins and losses, doesn't matter if was lucky or unlucky. The Twins had a good loss last night. Trevor May kept the Twins in it while was out there, pitched deep into the game. A person could point a finger at Mauer for not coming through in the eighth or at Vargas for happening to be the last out of the game, but neither one of them represented the Twins' only chance to get on base or drive someone in. If the Twins can do what they did last night and combine it with a few more hits, I think they will give the fans plenty to cheer about this year and plenty of reasonable hope for the future. I am looking forward to the next time I can see them in person, which is a good feeling.
  6. What kind of numbers would Rosario need to have to stay up with the big league club? I think they would have to be pretty big...
  7. It's funny how baseball as a "game" or part of Americana is constantly at odds with baseball as a "business." The Hunter signing somehow falls into both camps - signing the fan favorite and longtime fixture with successful Twins teams will bring in fans and sell those beers/hot dogs/t-shirts/etc. It's also a sentimental move, giving him a farewell tour of sorts, and it harkens back to all of those Kevin Costner baseball movies and parents playing catch with their kids in the back yard. Opponents of the signing will point to a team that is rebuilding -- playing time for the youth movement is valuable for the long term success of the team, so signing a player for sentimental reasons or for a boost in attendance is counter-productive to the goal of building a team that will be good for several years in the future. Signing Hunter will pull a fan in many directions - now that it's done and there's no undoing it, I feel personally like leaning towards a sentimental "good for him" camp. His play on the field might win the Twins a few more games this year, so that's fun. It's pretty hard for him to mentor Hicks when he's using up his roster spot... but that's another argument for another time. As mentioned in the post above, if Hunter is just "average" that's actually quite valuable for a team like the Twins that have had several below average options in the last 4 years.
  8. Woof. Well, that's exciting! Santana got his first walk last night!
  9. So, I haven't seen this mentioned before... what are people's thoughts on Rosario staying on after Arcia returns and taking Eduardo Nuñez's spot on the 25-Man Roster? Rosario could play middle infield and outfield, right? I would be ok with that move assuming that Rosario is not completely lost at the plate up here and assuming that he would play more often than Eduardo Nuñez has played so far.
  10. Hicks has never really shown himself to be the kind of guy to hold a grudge, but if he had a chip on his shoulder, the Twins just poured a bucket of salt on it. /hot take
  11. I suppose they could send back Tonkin (who was recalled when Fien went on the DL)... but they just added him... Or they could send Pressly back down. Boyer is probably getting another 4 or 5 appearances before the Twins decide to cut him... That's a complete guess on my part, just my gut feeling...
  12. Oh yeah - Rickey Henderson is one of my favorites from the 80s/90s as well. Greatest Leadoff Hitter of all-time!
  13. So... I am a little behind on all the moves lately - Stauffer to the DL, replaced by Pressly. Easy enough. Nolasco is being activated from the DL, so there's a second move pending? Milone will be moved to the bullpen to make room for Nolasco in the rotation, so does that signal the move will be a lefty reliever? Thielbar? Thompson? Duensing is expected to be activated as well... so... who else is getting demoted / DFA'd?
  14. Based on the very unscientific method of my own eye test, It seems like Vargas is taking himself out of the at bat early. His confidence from the end of last year seems to be a little damaged, and he's lost a bit of the plate discipline that earned him his call-up last year. He's deciding to swing or not before the ball is released by the pitcher. The homer he hit this year was and absolute laser beam - and he's had several very hard hit balls this year that show he is capable of doing a lot of damage. If he can calm down a bit and take each at bat as an independent event, he can help the Twins right now.
  15. Whew - as long as May is staying up, everything else is just peachy keen.
  16. I thought Torii was the one with Spidey Sense ?
  17. I guess the nuance of the stat is that the pitcher only gets credit for a pickoff if the runner is out returning to the base, and the catcher gets credit for a caught stealing if the running is out advancing to the next base... When catchers like Ivan Rodriguez would make a quick throw to first and catch a runner leaning off the bag after a pitch, would that be a pickoff, or a caught stealing? Seems like it would be called a pickoff....
  18. Kurt Suzuki is known for calling a lot of fastballs. Neil Allen is known for preaching the use of the change up. Hughes loves to throw fastballs up and then mix in a curve - lots of fastballs with an emphasis on location to throw the hitters off. I think the starters are doing just fine with their pitch mix, it's guys like Stauffer, Boyer, and JR Graham that seem like they are stuck trying to get batters out with just one pitch (the "fastball").
  19. Looking at the game logs, here are the three plays that Suzuki is getting credit for a CS this season: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=suzukku01&t=f&year=2015 April 10th at Chicago - bottom of the 3rd "Johnson Caught Stealing 3B (P-3B)" April 27th vs Detroit - top of the 7th "Cabrera Caught Stealing 3B (P-3B)" April 27th vs Detroit - top of the 8th "Martinez Caught Stealing 2B (P-2B)" So... he plays his best defense when he doesn't touch the ball.
  20. attaboys, Kennys!
