  1. I'm not interested in anything but starting pitchers at this point. Valencia isn't going to get you anything at this point, you might as well hold on to him and hope he heats up. I'd consider trading Span, but again, only for a starter.
  2. The Twins need to get past their aversion to spending on starting pitchers. Yes, they're risky, and yes, the contracts have ballooned out of control, but it's a fact of Major League Baseball now. If you want a good rotation you have to spend big money on free agents or make big trades and sacrifice some prospects.
  3. I think the Twins should trade Capps, but not right now. Teams will give up more once they get more desperate. And I doubt the Yankees would want him outside of a middle-relief role, so they probably wouldn't offer much.
  4. Sounds great for the Twins, but the Yankees know that Capps would get destroyed with that short porch at Yankee Stadium.
  5. Ryan would have said the team was going to be OK with quick fixes regardless of what he really thought. The Twins didn't want to declare they're rebuilding because it would hurt gate revenue.
  6. At the time this was planned Gardy didn't know just how bad it would be for the team right now. Your analogy doesn't fit unless Gardy decides to suddenly take an extra day or two off while he's gone.
  7. Sorry FDG. Which 100 things are OK to rip on?
  8. First it was the trees, now it's the rocks. How did the Twins ever get a hit with vampire seats in the batter's eye?
  9. You could be right, but if they're going to lose anyway, the Twins will sell more tickets if they play the guys who have a future.
  10. I get most of your point here, Seth, but I don't see any harm in calling up Diamond.
  11. Gardy has the reputation of being a good manager, and he's earned that. But you can't manage on reputation alone, and if the Twins' downward spiral continues he should absolutely be held accountable.
  12. I'd like to see Dozier up now. I know the Twins want to delay his service clock, but Dozier doesn't really profile as a guy who's going to break the bank down the road. I doubt he's going to play so well that the Twins will not be able to afford him.
  13. I didn't say necessarily that the problem was the manager, but I'm willing to bet that Gardy was closer to the guys on that 02 team than he is with the players he has now. Gardy established himself as a manager by building off TK's mentorship but also by fitting himself to the players he had at the time, rather than fitting the players to his style of managing which is what I see him doing now.
  14. The Twins turnarounds in 87 and 02 both corresponded with an influx of new talent and a new manager. TK took over late in 86 and Gardy took the helm before 02. Is it possible that a fresh new team needs a fresh new voice in the dugout? Do you think that young, inexperienced players might learn better from a manager who is also new, and potentially more relatable to them?
  15. I know that Plouffe hasn't been hitting particularly well, but the Twins need to find out what they have with him. Plouffe should be starting every day in RF, maybe spelled once in a while by Doumit. Wow, I just looked up Thomas's numbers in AAA last year - he struck out 130 times. In AAA. That's Jason Pridie territory.
  16. I guess I'd rather have a defensive catcher that can't hit than a defensive 3B that can't hit. But I'm not real comfortable with Plouffe as the backup infielder. Twins are going to need another infielder soon.
  17. Bad baseball is a bit of both. Just like the plays.
  18. I found something epically Shakespearean about the recall of Butera. I should know well enough to use a citation though. That's from 1 Henry IV, but you already knew that. The word "catching" with the implication of infectious disease seemed appropriate.
  19. Sick now! droop now! this sickness doth infect The very life-blood of our enterprise; 'Tis catching hither, even to our camp.
  20. Sore wrist, huh? Maybe he should see the Orioles' trainers, I hear they're pretty good about those things.
  21. That would be fun, but Gardy is still the manager. So Carroll is probably still batting 2nd.
  22. Hypothetically, if the Twins had the top 3 guys on that list (Longoria, Hamilton, and Cabrera) along with Mauer, which one would bat 3rd?
  23. Trade Pavano, Marquis, and Capps. Bring up Diamond... and some other guys. Any way you shake it up, the pitching will be bad.
  24. The Twins need to find out what they have in Plouffe, Revere, Valencia, and Parmelee. Guys like Abreu and Inge move this team in the wrong direction. I'm not interested in any veteran players if they can't pitch.
  25. Inge is a pretty good fielder with a terrible bat. Gardy's favorite kind of player.
