  1. Like, 99.9999%. Moar pitch-to-contact! But seriously, if Anderson gets credit for turning around Hughes, does that mean that the pitching coach in NY was really bad?
  2. You misspelled Nuñez.
  3. Pinto's in a tough situation. The Twins want him to improve defensively, but as a primary DH and only occasional catcher he's not really getting the chance to hone his craft. I don't want Pinto to be a DH if he can be a catcher. He needs more reps in actual games. Catching bullpen sessions and doing drills with Steiny isn't enough IMO.
  4. The addition of Morales gives Gardy someone else to DH besides his other catcher. Whether or not Morales is a better hitter than Pinto is up for debate, but now Gardy can point at Pinto's defense as the reason that Pinto's not in the lineup.
  5. Deduno needs to be replaced. He was a decent fallback option for Pelfrey to keep the kids in the minors long enough to delay their service clocks, but that's no longer an issue and the Twins have better options.
  6. If, heaven forbid, Gordon turns into a bust, I'll try to remember not to rip the Twins for selecting him. I would have picked him as well. Anyway, kudos to the Twins for agreeing with me.
  7. If Gardy says the reason Correia is staying in the rotation is the money he's making, it almost sounds like he'd make the move if he could but the FO is forcing him to keep running out Correia. The manager really shouldn't care one way or another about how much money a guy's making. All the manager should worry about is winning games.
  8. No, not like Mauer and Butera - the issue started with Mauer, and him being such a good offensive catcher that he was the best DH option on days he wasn't catching. Not that I wish Mauer was a worse offensive catcher. I would have rather the Twins have better options to DH on Mauer's off-days than Mauer himself. And I think "primary DH/secondary catcher" isn't a great way to utilize a young player like Pinto.
  9. Despite the offense the Twins have gotten from their catchers, I kind of miss the AJ/Tom Prince days, when they had one good regular catcher and one backup catcher who wouldn't sniff the lineup at all if it wasn't to give AJ a day off. Pinto can be a very good player, but he's grossly miscast as a backup catcher.
  10. This has been an issue for the Twins ever since Mauer came up. To keep his bat in the lineup when he wasn't catching, he would DH. Then Doumit was brought in to be both a primary DH AND a 2nd catcher. Now Suzuki is the primary catcher, and we're trying to find ways to get Pinto in the lineup. Maybe it's a rare situation for most teams. but it's been the norm for the Twins.
  11. Can't imagine what pitch Kubesie was looking for there.
  12. I wonder if/when Escobar will hit the skids at the plate... but I like the kid and he's a fun player to watch.
  13. Saying that Mauer's got to do better doesn't have to be negative. I'd just like it if they wouldn't obfuscate the problem to the media. "You know what, defenses are shifting on Joe, now he's got to shift on them. He's a hard worker and he's got a great track record, and we're confident he can do that."
  14. Bremer saying that Joe's been "victimized" by shifts and Gardenhire saying that Joe would hit .400 in Boston miss the point. Defensive shifts aren't cheating, and Joe's not playing in Boston. He's not a victim of circumstance. If the defense and the ballpark are depressing Joe's offensive numbers then he's got to make the adjustment himself. So far he hasn't done that.
  15. I wonder what Mauer's hypothetical batting average would be at Minute Maid, Great American, The Trop, Jacob's Field, Comiskey, Candlestick... My guess is it would be about the same as it is right now.
  16. Can we trade Target Field for Fenway Park?
  17. This is what I'm talking about. If he isn't good enough defensively to be a catcher, then find another position for him. There aren't 9 other Twins who deserve to be in the lineup more than Pinto. If you expect his defense to improve, it's going to take a very long time if the only game action he's seeing there is when Deduno is pitching.
  18. Let's say that Suzuki keeps hitting above his career averages all season, continues to catch 4 out of every 5 games, and leaves as a free agent at the end of the season. In that scenario, would the Twins feel comfortable with Pinto as their primary catcher in 2015? Or would they have the same reservations about his defense and game-calling and feel the need to get another veteran catcher to take the lion's share of the reps behind the plate? I'm happy for how Suzuki has played, but I want Pinto to be the regular catcher. Either he's a catcher or he's not, and I'd rather not pigeonhole him as a DH at this point in his young career.
  19. You should explain that point to Reusse.
  20. It's a shame how the Twins want Pinto to improve his defense... and don't give him the chance to take any reps there. His reputably bad defense becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
  21. Great, now Benny's going to mess up his perfect "12-hopper to the pitcher" swing.
  22. 10% vegetarian inclined? That's more than I would have thought considering the dearth of vegetarian dining options at any American ballpark. We aren't vegetarian for the convenience of it, you know.
  23. When I saw the title of this thread the first two words that popped into my head were "Clete Thomas". I guess I'd be OK with it if the Yankees paid most of his salary to ship him out. Otherwise keep watching that waiver wire.

    Ish

Hopefully they make better animal feeders/beverage coolers than urinals. I have to admit, they did have one feature that I liked - you didn't have to flush them (I'm looking at you, Target Field).
  25. Comparing active pitchers with historic pitchers isn't apples-to-apples. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/strikeouts_per_nine_career.shtml Not a lot of guys at the bottom of that list that I recognize until you get to Hall of Famer Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown at #780. He retired in 1916. Not a whole lot of active pitchers down there. Conversely, 22 of the first 50 pitchers on the list are active, and most of the rest are guys who retired very recently.
