  1. Missed the point bud. Most of this thread is saying "I can't believe they paid him that!" Welcome to free agency. Hence why the idea of solving this team's pitching woes there was ridiculous from the start. I don't remember anybody saying they were going to solve the pitching woes solely through free agency. Plenty, including Ryan himself have said they will explore every option with trades obviously being their next best option. I'll agree it's going to be a stretch but losing Baker is hardly cause for excessive hand wringing, not to mention the ridiculous condescation.
  2. +1, some people around here need to stop taking everything so seriously.
  3. Time out!! Mindless bickering.
  4. So you know he won two in five years. And it's still "random", as it pertains to his abilities as GM? Ok. Agree to disagree. And I apologize to you and all the other posters from the bottom of my heart for calling you sunshine. I've read the Binary thread, and although I always respect John's takes on baseball, I disagreed with him and others in it. 85 wins doesn't get you $#!^, either getting to or winning in the playoffs the past 10 seasons. Going back to the point of the thread, Epstein certainly has his work cut out for him with the Cubs. But if Cubs ownership is willing to accelerate the process with more payroll for gambles like Baker, Theo may return the Cubs to respectability sooner rather than later. I thought it wasn't about money? Money doesn't buy championships, granted, but it sure helps to put a competitive team on the field that gives you a pretty good chance. GM's build/buy teams that can make the playoffs, whatever happens after that has very little to do with them or any other single factor.
  5. It's Epstein not Einstein, and don't forget the bottomless pit of cash factor.
  6. I agree, I don't see the benefit of piling on when someone turns out to be wrong. Jeff Except if it's Thrylos, that's the benefit.
  7. What? There are no pay cut restrictions on free agents. Don't let facts get in the way of a bad argument.
  8. If they would have signed better pitchers they wouldn't have called up all those "quality" arms form Rochester. Obviously no decent pitcher is going to sign before Zach Greinke signs his deal. by looking at the free agent SP there are about 15-20 good starters to choose from and the Twins need to add 3 arms by either FA or trade. So I guess the best thing to do is sit back and do nothing until after the Winter meetings and then we can have another season of disappointment... Well there you go, what do you suggest TR should have done by now then, sign Greinke? You've successfully contradicted yourself.
  9. Excuse me? When? World Series? Only once the TR teams moved to the ALCS and then that team lost. In his time as a GM he built teams that were winning AL Central championships often and then bowed out in the post-season in the 2000s and teams that were in the basement in the 90s and 2010s so far. Well I'll never claim to being as wise as you but I would call any team that moved to a league championship game a World Series contender. Anytime you're within 8 wins of winning it all, you're a contender. With playoffs being such a small sample, stuff happens.
  10. How many teams have so many glaring problems to fix with no immediate help in sight from the farm system? Are there teams needing 4 starting pitchers, a shortstop a 2B and a 3B? C'mon seriously do you really have a problem with the moves so far? Your statement is absolutely correct but I have a hard time believing you feel as if something different should have happened by now, unless you advocate just throwing as much money as possible to someone so that they can't say no, a real sound strategy and one I know you wouldn't advoacte. The point is nothing big has really happened and it won't until the big names start coming off the board, Ryan can't force paper to pen with any of these guys and we all know the top of the class isn't coming anyway.
  11. I wouldn't rule it out.
  12. Most sound businesses don't, certainly not when it comes to payroll.
  13. Now, you're just starting to sound like an illiterate version of Thrylos.
  14. When lacking anything intelligent to say the last resort is to complain.
  15. Never mind, but some posts are showing in the future.
  16. Hmmmmm, why would Jim Pohlad want to keep $12.5m? Hmmm, I wonder why? The Twins model is to peg payroll at a percentage of projected revenue, that's it, look no further. It's not a matter of can't, it's a matter of won't. This whole thing is pretty basic business fundamentals, it's not tied to profit, it's the other way around.
  17. Two words....Pitch ing......wait that's two syllables, same deal though. MI can wait until the trade deadline next year, if necessary (likely).
  18. Now's the time to move Willingham, not sure why the Braves would want to give away what's being suggested here but if's even close, TR should do it. If they want a CF, we have one of those too.
  19. How many advisers will we need to hire to make up for Macphail's ineptitude? Seriously, running a team the way the Cubs and O's were run the last 20 years is what we want advice on?
  20. Dierkes pretty much tells us how much this is worth in his opening paragraph when he says he got 8 of 50 of these correct last year. Complete guess work.
  21. Calm down brother...it was meant as hyperbole. So what we're left with is that you wanted to come here and put stink on Gardenhire for an imagined and invented mis-use of a theoretical 2013 Capps by using an exaggerated (one could say BS instead) accusation of mis-use of a past player ( when that was more accurately probably the best player available to be used in the role in question)? Am I calm enough to have that about right? its been a pleasure.... Wish we could say the same.
  22. Nobody said that. It's being pretty strongly implied here by the people suggesting that KC getting Santana for beans isn't all that big news. Acquiring a pitcher better than anything we have for merely salary is exactly what this team should be doing right now, let's not ignore that. Right now I'd be excited at anything that represents improvement in our pitching staff.
  23. What future at MI ? The worst part about losing JJ is that we got jack for him.
