While we are waiting .... with Marek Houston playing shortstop for Wichita now, Brandon Winokur is back at shortstop for Cedar Rapaids tonight. He made a spectacular play in the first inning. If the bat ever arrives big time Winokur can play anywhere.

I'm thinking that U.S colleges and universities should eliminate all sports. Athletes can play in club or professional leagues, similar to what is done in the remainder of the world. Seems like schools should be for getting an education. If one is familiar with the work load of a college athlete, you know that academics is not on the agenda. The latest proposal is likely somewhat tongue in cheek but hey why not have taxpayers pick up the bill for training more baseball players.

For those curious to watch, the Saints are facing Hunter Greene tonight (game in bottom of 1st inning). Jenkins hit a triple in his first at bat back in AAA.

Wallner in right field at Target Field would be a big setback to the pitching staff; can't do it. Unless Austin Martin continues to drift off into obscurity, I doubt any moves are made in the outfield for a couple of weeks. I'm ready to see Walker Jenkins if the Twins feel he is ready.

Any MLB pitcher who manages to hit their spots as often as Eric Lauer did last night becomes a Cy Young guy for a game. A tip of the hat to Lauer for pushing his pitches all over the outer edges of the zone and leaving virtually nothing for the wood to eat. If the Twins can get the pitchers to give them some pitches tonight, I like our chances. Conversely, the Dodgers are a patient club at the dish, so the Twins arms need to throw strikes, get ahead in the count and keep the ball off the barrel. Twins even up the series.

The Twins have been intentional about how they move prospects. One trend we may see more in focus this year and moving forward that differs to an extent from past practices is an increased attention to which players play good defense. The bats are important to be sure, but the club may be moving away from players who cannot field a position at an above average level. Perhaps my preference for a sound defender at all fielding positions makes for an obvious bias but those prospects who are more DH than glove will need to far outpace the competition to receive promotions. It will be something to watch in any event. Walker Jenkins and Kaelen Culpepper only need to hit the ball hard and display consistently strong plate appearances before they earn a promotion. Marek Houston will find out if he has the bat to continue his steps in his career. Ka'lai Rosario will need to bash and faces a tough path as one of several players working to earn a shot at a DH position in the future. One has to wonder how the Twins will view the coming trade deadline in early August. Could we see a few surprising transactions?

Good game. The Twins played pretty good. Eric Lauer hit the outside of the strike zone in every place possible. Sometimes any ordinary pitcher can have extraordinary command, which make hitting super difficult. The Dodgers make all the plays and are about as fundamentally sound as any team could be. Some sweet walk-offs tonight in Chicago on the South Side and in Denver. The Rockies are a pesky bunch.

Tait is not ready for a promotion.

Health is always the primary concern when it comes to pitchers. A healthy focused Joe Ryan is a tough opponent. Defense behind Ryan is also important. We have seen the Twins begin to shift towards better defenders and if any additional improvements are coming it can only help the pitchers and Ryan.

I wonder how Cholowsky now compares to Brooks Lee when he was drafted?

This team plays hard. Sometimes the results are very disappointing such as the loss to Arizona but the club rebounded with two victories. The bullpen is not complete by any standards but improved. The offense can be frustrating but the team does score runs. The starting pitching has hit some potholes but is still holding steady. That leaves the defense and we have seen Shelton make adjustments to address some of the prior weaknesses. Things are looking up. Can the boys find a consistent level? Does a 4-2 week seem possible? Hopefully Rojas gives the team a boost and Ryan reaches deep to throw a shutout. As always I enjoy the summary and am looking forward to some good baseball this week.

Wallner with another HR today. Maybe he can bring back a Comp Pick.

Ryan Kreidler is a big man and very athletic. His defense is good everywhere and might even improve if he were an everyday player. The problem has been that Kreidler doesn't hit enough to hold down a regular spot. The Twins are going to promote Kaelen Culpeppper when he is ready, which may have been delayed due to his recent injury. In the meantime Twins fans will need to hope that Kreidler hits enough to get his name on the lineup card more often. Last night was a good start. The play to nip Corbin at first base was a pitcher's best friend gift.

Play good defense and the team will be ok. There will be some shifting that happens in the next two months. The big innings were a joy to watch. Baseball is tough. Gallen made his pitches and the ball found holes and then the Twins started to square up pitches after that. Rough stretch recently for the veteran Gallen.

Isn't that something. While writers, some quite popular, were spending every day slamming the Pohlads and creating a crusade against the owners, Falvey directed an organization with the largest budget in the AL Central during his time leading the club with mostly substandard decisions.

The minor league feeds use fewer cameras. We get a widescreen shot of the field on replays that highlights how unbelievably slow Big Matt responds to batted balls. You can count to three on most balls hit in his direction. Once Jenkins is up, Wallner moves to permanent DH. His days in the field should be over. Josh Willingham was a much better outfielder. Wallner has not made any discernable adjustments and his plate appearances pretty much mirror what we saw when he was with the Twins. MILB pitchers miss their spots more often which accounts for the hits Wallner has as a Saint. I wonder if he might improve if he was only used as a DH?

For those who could not watch the game on TV, there were some sad things to report. Buck thought the ball was a HR and even after he saw it was in play he assumed he had an easy double until he was more than halfway to second base. Not a good start. The big inning for Arizona included two errors and two ungodly slow turns and weak throws on routine double plays, which meant Prielipp needed to record seven outs that inning. A moratorium has been declared on any further comments regarding the work of Julien at second base after Keaschall has been unable to reach that dubious previous low standard despite Luke looking good and hustling which some people love as opposed to just making the plays. All in all it was a dreadful performance and one can only hope the players are reflective and return tonight with a much better level of effort and play.

There were details. Only one run should have scored for an average defense. Error and botched DP started the damage. The plays were very routine. After that was another failed DP and hard one hopper that was misplayed. I'm sure the radio guys were less than direct in their calls.

Are you watching the game on Apple TV or following the game?
  20. tony&rodney
Martin looks like he is done these days, which is totally different than when he was so focused.
  21. tony&rodney
not sure how you gave any percentage to a pitcher who created 7 outs.
  22. tony&rodney
His infielders are turning batted balls into outs too. Amazing.
  23. tony&rodney
Of course you are being sarcastic. Prielipp did everything right. He threw two double plays that weren't completed and two outs to infielders that wound up with guys on base. Did you want him to strike out the side on 9 pitches?
  24. tony&rodney
Prielipp gets credit for 3 outs and the Diamondbacks made .... count em - 7 outs. That is really incredible. I'm not sure the Twins can count on Luke Keaschall as a second baseman for 2027. I'm hoping Lee improves. Gray is a placeholder but it might be time to use Kreidler against a few right-handed pitchers even if he goes 0-4.
  25. tony&rodney
Give a team six outs and ......
