  1. There's no way around the fact that plate discipline has been an issue for him in the Majors so far. I've long been a big Arcia fan and think he will figure it out, but objectively it is a red flag.
  2. Well I'm not a scout, but that's what Law and some other analysts have said. Command is different from control... the latter refers to the ability to avoid walks, while the former refers to the ability to specifically locate pitches, whether in or out of the strike zone. Burdi can just blow away college hitters without really worrying about location too much.
  3. He throws super hard and has a violent delivery, with poor command. There's no guarantee he'll stay healthy long enough to even make it to the Twins (see, e.g., JT Chargois) or do much once he's there. That's my problem with it - there's limited upside due to his relief role, yet still a good amount of risk. It's not necessarily a bad bet purely in WAR terms, but it's a missed opportunity to add depth at a more important position.
  4. They start most high schoolers in rookie league. With respect to Cedar Rapids though... surely you aren't suggesting that guys like Montanez and Mildren are better than a top 50 draft pick?
  5. What difference does that make? For what it's worth, Law had him ranked #56, but again- this pick makes no sense for the Twins. They are not a contender who logically could prefer short-term help over longer-term upside.
  6. To pass on guys like Imhof, Reid-Foley, etc., for a relief pitcher, makes zero sense. The Twins do not have enough starting pitching depth to take a reliever #46 overall. Unforced errors like this are why the Twins have gotten so little out of their drafts for much of the past decade.
  7. No they don't. They just didn't know they were hurt. There is nothing about Tommy John surgery that would allow for more velocity than if the same pitcher was just healthy and didn't need it. It's not medically possible.
  8. Ortiz doesn't have the plate discipline to play in the Majors. He would be eaten alive.
  9. I guess next is the prediction they win the World Series this year?
  10. The Twins got something for Drew Butera. I just mean that Deduno's potential trade value is not something that should really affect how the Twins use him. He's OK and all, but not overly relevant in the scheme of things. I'd just keep him around as a swing guy for the time being, it would be nice to have a spot starter available on staff (especially carrying 12 pitchers).
  11. I agree he's an adequate back-end starter. That's only a commodity in the eyes of shell shocked Twins fans. I'm not in a hurry to remove him from the rotation either, since Correia is still in it... but if a young player earns a shot, Deduno shouldn't be an impediment. That would make no sense for the future of the club.
  12. Deduno has 220 career innings as an MLB starter, with a FIP of 4.55 and xFIP of 4.34 (too small a sample for ERA to be indicative). His run prevention abilities are average but he doesn't pitch deep into games and there are health concerns. He has little trade value and makes more sense as a swingman out of the bullpen.
  13. I don't remember that being the case at all. I know I liked the pick, and believe many others did as well.
  14. I must say, that is a truly novel argument - when a pitcher gets his ERA below 6.00, you cannot remove him from the rotation. That's the great thing about a 7.33 ERA I guess... even one of the worst pitchers in MLB can improve on it.
  15. The whole pitch selection thing reminds me of other stuff we've heard over the years, that turned out to not really be the correct explanation. Hitters at the Midwest League level are generally not good at all... Slowey tore them apart with fastball command alone, other guys just overpower them with velocity, etc. You don't need to be a complete pitcher to dominate at that level.
  16. Yeah, what does happen if injuries start piling up? What difference does Correia make in that situation? There is always fungible, AAAA talent out there if 5 or 6 starters get hurt at the same time. Either way Correia does nothing for the organization.
  17. I don't like the idea of dropping or de-emphasizing a good pitch for any significant amount of time. Pitchers always say how important 'feel' is, and it seems like throwing a pitch is important in terms of maintaining and developing it.
  18. If he's really not throwing his slider at all, how can he improve his command of the pitch? That doesn't seem like a real bright strategy. Is that really the case, that the pitch is shelved entirely? If so, it would help explain the K rate... and also explain why, by the time he reaches the Majors, he won't have a good 3rd pitch anymore.
  19. If Correia is worth an MLB rotation spot, surely 1 of the other 29 teams would take him off the Twins' hands? His numbers don't really matter - he will not be in the rotation of the next contending Twins club. So his presence is pointless when younger options are available. I'm not a big believer in May, but between him and the other guys at AAA, it makes no sense to throw Correia out there.
  20. The Cardinals aren't getting a top 50 prospect for Jay.
  21. Because he is an awful manager?
  22. No, Twins management just needs to tell their employee Ron Gardenhire that his concerns are nonsense and counterproductive to the future of the club. If he has a problem with that, he can resign.
  23. It's not necessarily a topic that is susceptible of hard evidence. I just think his domination of the low minors built up expectations that don't necessarily fit his MLB potential. Playing CF in the Majors isn't easy... lots of fast guys with a ton more experience at the position still struggle with it (e.g., Aaron Hicks). Maybe my impression dates more to before the emergence of Dozier and Rosario's suspension, when there definitely were fans hoping for him to quickly take over 2B.
  24. It's amazing how people defend Gardenhire and the Twins for running out that lineup. It cannot be rationally justified. We're well outside the realm of opinion and argument. He is not competent.
