Article: Twins Keep It Simple, Defeat Red Sox 2-1
Dantes929 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It has been fun to watch but again, mainly because of the pithing. If our 3 or 4 runs scored in the first 3 innings ended up with 4-3 losses because we didn't score after that we would be looking at scoring early from the viewpoint that we can't score middle and late. Still gets back to pitching and timely hitting. Gardy and Anderson had nothing to do with Pelfrey and Nolasco being hurt but does Allen get any credit for Pelfrey picking up a pitch and most of the pitchers emphasizing the changeup? Gardy did just fine when his pitchers were throwing quality starts and his offense was hitting .290 with RISP. He did fine to the tune of 6 division titles in 9 years. IMO managers are mostly overrated. I didn't give him a lot of credit when he was winning so it seems just to not blame him much for the losing seasons. Just seems like the batting and pitching coaches and injuries have much more impact. Like I said Gardy was regularly lambasted for playing infielders in the outfield last year and he didn't have 4 guys that could play there like Molly does. Pelfrey holds the lead so the 2nd inning misplay is not what the focus is on. How often did Pelfrey or any of our pitchers do that last year? -

Not to beat a dead horse but how many times with Gardy at the helm did an infielder playing the outfield misplay a fly ball that cost us a run and our pitcher then shut out the other team the rest of the way for the win. I am guessing zero times. For that matter how often did we get 5 quality starts in a row or have Pelfrey go 4-1 with a 2.76 ERA under Gardy. I like Molitor but still think the credit thus far goes to our pitching coach.. -
Article: Clutch Joe Mauer Is Suddenly An RBI Machine
Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are tradeoffs with power, OBP and average. I have stated I don't care if he ever hits another homer as long as he bats .320 gets on .400 and hits a lot of doubles. I agree his current production does not overcome his lack of power. I am not giving up hope on him getting back to elite but am not real confident that trying to pull the ball will get him there. I am not really sold on the idea that hitting from the 1B spot is much different than any other. If he plays good D and is better than the next option and is better than 2/3 of the other hitters is enough of a standard. for him to be out there. Of course as the rest of the guys get better it becomes a higher standard. We agree he needs to do better than he has so far. I am really hoping that .400 BA for a month is still in him. -
Article: Clutch Joe Mauer Is Suddenly An RBI Machine
Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think this overlooks the value of a walk in scoring situations. With the bad teams Mauers value diminishes because of the efficiency of those around him. When it was Morneau, Thome and Cuddyer behind him then walks mean more because they simply add base runners for good hitters which produce runs even though they don't show up very positively in the slugging or RBI stats. -
I like the idea of Hicks facing a lefty in his first game. Not liking the idea of that lefty being Price. I have been skeptical of Hicks ever developing his left handed swing to major league level. Really pulling for him though because an outfield of Rosario, Buxton and Hicks at some point is really appealing.

Article: It's Time For Aaron Hicks
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is a really huge assumption here in that if Hicks continues to play in the minors he will continue to hit .330 until June 1st or 15th or whatever. I have advocated playing him in a platoon but if you are saying he is a full time player then there will never be a better time to call him up than right now. If he continues to hit well in the minors we have gained nothing from keeping him there. If he goes in a slump in the minors we will have missed our window for promoting him when his confidence is high and his stats warrant the promotion. I would try to bring him up to face a team that starts a lot of lefties but probably would not start him out against Price. -
Package Danny Santana with someone (Nolasco?) for Cole Hamels?
Dantes929 commented on Target Field of Dreams's blog entry in Target Field of Dreams' Blog
I get what you are saying. Not only do we have Polanco but also Gordon in the not so distant future. I always thought we would end up trading Dozier to make room for one of these guys. As absurd as it seems I don't know what we would trade for. If you could trade Santana and Arcia for a better more polished version of Arcia I might like it. Buxton appears to be the only sure thing for the outfield. I like Arcia's potential as a hitter but not his potential defensively and Hcks is doing well and Rosario is talented but I wouldn't mind having another guy with a lot of upside. Either that or a top catching prospect. This is all said with the aim of getting good value in a trade. I like Santana and don't mind keeping him. -
Article: WARNE: Trevor May; A Pleasant Surprise
Dantes929 replied to Brandon Warne's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Eye ball test last year told me he was getting ahead in the count and then threw a couple pitches that weren't even close so which were truly waste pitches of no value and then would end up walking the guy. This year when he is ahead in the count he is throwing pitches that actually tempt the batter to swing. I did attribute last year to nerves and approach which was probably a lot different than what he was succeeding with in the minors. Give May a lot of credit for overcoming these things. -
Article: Time To Take Twins Seriously?
Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"but Trevor May, Mike Pelfrey and Kyle Gibson have all been nice surprises" Haven't surprised me much especially May and Gibson. Pelfrey doesn't surprise me all that much because I remember his nice stretch in 2013. and I just expect the best of the people I root for. Since Pelfrey has picked up the pace those are the guys I enjoy watching most. I like Hughes but find his style a little boring. I don't like Nolasco all that much and find his style a little boring. I take them seriously and will continue to do so even if they lose a dozen straight. We at least have seen a glimpse of what they can do. The future is bright. If not, then the next future will be. Just out of curiosity if they continue to play well and then are bolstered by Buxton, Hicks and Santana later and make a serious run at a division that most folks say has the two best teams in the league will it still mean that the game has passed Ryan by?- 41 replies

We recently faced a team with a lot of lefties. That would have made more sense for HIcks to come up. I know his splits are better from the left side than what they were but I would still like him to come up facing lefties to start with and get his confidence up a bit. Personally, I would have liked a platoon of sorts among Robsinson, Rosario and Hicks. and send Schaefer or Nunez down.

Remember 2011 and 2012 when we were promoting guys to the Twins with minor league ERA's north of 4, or even 5? I look forward to seeing Hu pitch with the Twins as much as I do Meyer or Berrios.

Article: Can Kennys Vargas Make The Adjustment?
Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Satntana started slow and has been picking it up. Vargas started ok and has been in a downward spiral. Last year I was impressed with Vargas willingness to hit where the ball was thrown and that he wasn't over swinging. I believe that home run derby stuff can mess up a swing. Vargas like Arcia do not need to swig their hardest to hit the ball out. Problem with the young guys being in slumps is that they appear to think they can make up for it al with one home run. Reminds me of taking my 9 year old son and his friend out to the driving range. My son would just grip it and rip it while his friend was really working on his form and did not square up a single ball. My son was swinging wilder and wilder and was soon not hitting anything well either. The next day we went again and my son kept flailing at the ball while his friend started hitting good shot after good shot. It really is about the process rather than the results. Take care of the little things with good at bats and the results will take care of itself -
I saw a routine ground ball go between the legs of last year's GG winner. Not exactly Brook Robinson competition there. I think I could win a GG but don't think my .0033 BA would play so well there. I used to dislike Plouffe offensively and defensively but now like him for both so I give him a lot of credit.

Article: What To Make Of Mike Pelfrey
Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We may be putting the cart before the horse here. If Nolasco has two more rehab starts then that probably means everyone else gets two more starts before then as well. What are the odds we get 8 quality starts in a row out of Milone, Pelfrey, May and Gibson. I absolutely agree about May and Gibson and wonder why anyone is down on Gibson. What I don't understand is any love of Nolasco. He has done nothing for us and does not really have such a great track record before coming here. If the rotation is still pitching well then you just leave it alone until there is an opening. -
If it is a bunt in the 9th of a perfect game and your team is down by more than 4 that might be considered rude. If it is the 9th inning of a perfect game and you are down by 3 or less and you think bunting is the best way to get on base but you don't do it out of respect for the other team's pitcher you should be fined and traded in that order. Just my opinion.

Article: What To Make Of Mike Pelfrey
Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would have been quite happy if it had turned out to be a Hughes, Santana, Gibson, May and Meyer rotation but give credit where it is due. Pelfrey shut out a very hot KC team. I love that he is throwing his fastball harder but less often. Most pitcher get a couple extra ticks on their fastball they will throw it more often so props to Pelfrey for using it more effectively. I always thought he had at least as much stuff as Nolasco so I am not anxious to see Nolasco back at all. As well as Pelfrey pitched I thought Milone might have been even better the night beore.. Unfortunately, he appeared to be the victim f a very slightly shrunken strike zone and very patient KC hitters. Even with that he did ok. -
Dan Gladden, Pat Meares, Jaque Jones, Nick Punto, Adam Everett, Brendan Harris, Alexi Casilla, Nishioka, Ben Revere and Aaron Hicks notwithstanding.
-
I like Santana. I said last year he wasn't as good as his numbers suggest and I say now he isn't as bad as his numbers suggest. While I am not sure if he is our shortstop of the future with Gordon and Polanco coming up, 12 games is still a long ways away from the outer range of SSS. Maybe wait until his career batting average goes below .290. Or at least .300.
-
Not sure why you include Mauer with this group. Among those with 100 games or more his fielding % was tied for the best in 2014. He certainly seems to make a lot of nice plays, he starts double plays well and is a great target. Annoying error Sunday but otherwise better than average since he has moved over IMO.

Article: For Young Hitters The Struggle Is Real
Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I disagree. Its not like he was facing high school pitchers. They are better in the majors but not 80 BA points better. If you look at clips from his minor days he was much more balanced and controlled. I am fine with your conclusion but not your premise. He was a good all around hitter and now he is not and need to make adjustments to become one. -

Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would gladly take what he gave us in the minors. I also believe that he has gotten bigger and more powerful so that if he made the same contact now as he did in the minors the power would be there. I am petty sure we are saying the same thing in terms of destination but I would like to see him focus on good contact and let he homers take care of themselves. -

Hicks I get but shortstops and 3rd baseman that finished in the top half should bring something better than what you suggest. Why is anyone down on either one of them?
