Article: Molitor Hints At Six-Man Rotation
Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like I said the logic is unassailable but the execution is questionable. it does matter who the best 5 are which is not solved by who makes out the list. Its why I wanted Santana to start out in the bullpen and simply wait until performance or injury sorts it out. I think all the current starters have earned their way to keep going right now.- 73 replies

Article: Molitor Hints At Six-Man Rotation
Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First of all, it seems to me that :Gibson in particular doesn't pitch quite as well when rested. The gain in velocity is more than offset by the lack of movement. I don't know about the rest. I absolutely agree with the logic that you should throw your 5 best out there and move the other to the pen or minors but I have a few problems with the reality. Its not even certain that Santana is currently among the top 5 with his age, PED's and layoff. In your list you delete Milone from the rotation. I know you don't value ERA much but it is a fact that he has the lowest career ERA of the whole group. You say that results from favorable conditions in Oakland but then there is the fact that he has the lowest ERA on the team this season to go along with lights out pitching in the minors. You say small sample size but you to at least admit that there is the possibility that he is currently the best pitcher right now and that Santana is the worst. By going with your 5 man rotation you have now replaced your best of the 6 with the worst of the 6. it absolutely matters who the top 5 are for your basic premise to work out favorably. 6 man rotation in that instance trumps the 5 man.- 73 replies

Article: TD Midseason Top Prospects: #2 Miguel Sano
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Funny how people see the same thing and draw different conclusions. From my view Vargas looked very balanced and under control last year and swung according to where he was pitched. (not trying to go the other way but able to if that is where the pitch was). This year it looks like he is swinging much harder and trying to pull the ball more with poor results. The "Twins Way" is a myth, IMO -
Article: Twins Promote Alex Meyer
Dantes929 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Funny that Milone is the lone starter with the best ERA and is a likely candidate for being the one to be replaced. If this were spring training I am fine with putting Santana in ink but I never like the idea of replacing players that are doing well currently. For example I would take Santana's career over Scot Diamond's career in a heart beat but I would not take him over Scot Diamond of 2012. Rotation is doing well and Santana will fit in for someone eventually. I just see no need for it to be now. -
Lol, read the sentence again in a different light. I said I liked the signing of Pelfrey as much as I did the signing of Nolasco. That wasn't really an endorsement. I didn't hate the signing because I really did like what he did in those three months and thought there was potential beyond that of Correia and at least that of Nolasco. I would have been ok with not signing either of them.

Santana to the pen. Every starter has an ERA lower than Santana's career ERA. Why take anyone out until there is a real likelihood of Santana doing better than who he replaces. It will happen. It just shouldn't happen now. -
I couldn't understand why they didn't give him a two year contract in the first place since or at least an option for the 2nd year. The second contract had some logic to it. He had 9 good starts out of 14 from June to August in his first year before understandably wearing out toward the end. His ERA is July was a very good 3.6 and August was an even better 3.25. There was every reason to think he would come back strong in 2014. I liked his resigning as much as I did the Nolasco signing. Like I said, with Tommy John recover I thought and option on his 2nd year would have made sense in his first contract. Good thing I am not GM since if that had happened we would not have him this year.

Article: Grading Molitor's Early Returns
Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was at the game and was surprised it was a strike. It looked like a pitch out to me but either way it was a good pitch for the catcher. I knew he was going that pitch and figured they did also. he did not get a good jump. -

Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think Molitor makes as much difference as many people think though I do think he is doing a fine job. Gardy needed to go because he was definitely getting stale but managers in general are overrated IMO. The guy I believe has more influence is Chad Allen. Biggest difference between this year and the prior 4 is not the use of the bullpen, or the offense. It is the starting rotation. Now maybe Allen doesn't deserve full credit for that either since Pelfrey and Gibson have benefited from health they haven't had in the past but it is the rotation that has made the difference so far. Does Molitor get credit for that or is it Ryan? -
The Twins $55 Million Dollar Question
Dantes929 commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
"There's absolutely no doubt that the Twins need to find a place for him in their rotation. It's also a great thing that we are having to ask this question, rather than be able to point to three different pitchers that don't belong." I have plenty of doubt. Hughes has a higher ERA than Santana's career ERA, May's is very close and the other 3 are far outperforming Santana's career ERA. Put Santana in the pen and find the spot in the rotation when one of them falters or gets hurt. And get rid of Nolasco. -
Article: The Outlook In The Outfield
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Article doesn't really touch on how much better the outfield defense has been this year and how much better Rosario, Buxton and Hicks can be than Willingham, Schaefer and Arcia. What was a huge liability coming into the season looks like it could be a huge asset. Team can afford Hunter or Arcia in right as long as Buxton and Rosario man the other two spots. I like Arcia and Vargas but am leaning toward one of them leaving.- 70 replies

Article: Can Joe Mauer Rebound From Poor Start?
Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have been saying all along that he should ignore the shift. The pitchers were even throwing to the outside corner which should be in his wheelhouse to go to left. In other words he should be able to square more balls up going the other way which would offset the fact that the shift will take away some of those well hit balls. Another factor psychologically besides the shift is the strike zone. I listen to opposing team's broadcasts and several times they mention that Mauer didn't like a strike call and for good reason. This goes with when I watch the games and fox tracks show that borderline calls on the outside corner and even a little more than borderline are called strikes. This would naturally erode one of Mauer's strengths which is discipline in the strike zone. -
I am surprised the Quality Start stat isn't better. It is better than the last two years but not significantly. Hurt a bit by Milone with 1 our of 5 and Nolasco who is 1 of 7. Gibson, Pelfrey, Hughes and May all doing ok so am hoping either Milone gets it together or Santana replaces the Nolasco/Milone spot.

Article: Twins Lack Punch From Middle Of The Order
Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hitters slump. They will do better than bat .119 because they are all better than .119 hitters. Mauer's problem isn't the shift IMO. The problem is not squaring up the ball. Its missing pitches he used to hit for line drives. The whole team is slumping but that can change in a matter of days. I agree if Mauer continues to bat like he has then he will be a big problem. Best current option is to plug Polanco into the lineup. We need a spark. -
Article: Correa Just Opened The Door For Buxton
Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Speaking of TK, he batted Knoblach 2nd right off the bat his rookie year. Puckett also led off when promoted. I could probably list dozens if not hundreds across the majors who thrived when put at the top of the order immediately. Hicks failed but that doesn't mean Buxton would. I don't even believe Hicks failed because he was mishandled. Sometimes it is just up to the player. Sometimes it is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I remember Valencia tearing up the league his first season but also thought that getting a few infield and seeing eye hits early was probably the difference in getting him to relax. I think it is possible Buxton would do just fine but am more in favor of giving Polanco an extended look. -
Article: When Will Molitor Start Making Adjustments?
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
But I am not debating it. I value OBP more than most but I agree he is bad compared to other !B. What I am saying is that he is better than all but 3 others in our lineup so he should be batting in the top 5. That's the part that mystifies me. He is one of the worst batters at his position but nevertheless obviously one of the best hitters on a team that is 4th in runs scored. -

What you say is pretty much true but you are really handcuffing a lot of people if you take away cherry picking. Go to your favorite site and compare Mauer to the other players on the team. I really don't know how they scored so many last year and just as mystified this year. Really looking forward to Buxton, Sano and Polanco getting here with their talent so that numbers might start making sense again. -

Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is it over a year? Mauer led the team in OBP last year like he does every year. Would not surprise me in the least if he does again this year. You can debate the value of OBP and whether or not he should be in the # 3 spot but if anyone gets leeway it is still Mauer. His OBP the 2nd half of last year was .397 so if you were looking for an answer to the question mark the answer is no. I will be happy when we have a lot of guys that should obviously be in the top 5 spots ahead of him. That day just isn't here yet, IMO -
Article: When Will Molitor Start Making Adjustments?
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I still believe Mauer will get it going at some point. Escobar's playing time this year was earned last year just like Santana but that leeway should come to an end. Escobar appears to be over swinging. As always people want Mauer moved down in the order without any really good options offered up. Take a look at Baseball Ref and look at the OBP and tell me Mauer isn't the best option. The only guys ahead of him are also in the top 4. Mauer will get better but even if he doesn't someone else needs to improve to replace him. Free Polanco and it might fix a few things. -
That was actually a kind of funny comment. I would say by definition a Cy Young candidate on a good day does well against anyone. Its not really a weakness. Aside from David Price I have been really happy with how the Twins have done against other team's top pitchers

Dancing and team unity and chemistry are all very good but they are probably a result of success as much as a cause of it. Hunter's influence didn't seem to matter much until he hit 3 run homers to back it up.

Article: Mauer: Productive Season Or Worst Season
Dantes929 replied to kamarainen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I also believe the concussion had the biggest impact on Joe. If not for that why would it not be reasonable to expect his production of 5 years ago? I believe he has career average years left in him. I also think he has an extended hot streak in him this year. -
Article: Twins Keep It Simple, Defeat Red Sox 2-1
Dantes929 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I do like Molly. Always have and I never really cared all that much for Gardy but I don't really think there is that much between the two. After 25 games I read that someone thought the Twins were 3 or 4 games better with Molly. Of course there is no way to tell but I am pretty sure that even if a manager made a lot of dumb move and another made a lot of smart moves it wouldn't account for that much. Some dumb moves work out and some smart moves fail. If you pinch hit Nick Punto for Derek Jeter in late innings in high leverage situations a 100 times Punto would get a hit 25 times as opposed to Jeter's 31 times and not all of those would mean the difference in the game. If you teach Pelfrey a new pitch that makes him a 2.7 ERA guy rather than a 4.5 ERA game it will make more impact. I am simplifying obviously but the concept is why I think the coach has more influence. I am fine with Molitor even if they do lose another 70 games.
