Article: Buxton and Dozier Gold Glove Finalists
Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm fine with that. If the award is to mean anything both things should be ripped.... and shredded. Seriously, I don't know how Mauer did with runs above replacement but considering every time he sat it seemed like errors and mistakes were made over there so runs above OUR replacements was probably better than Buxton's. Buxton should have run away with it and from what I actually witnessed among other first basemen when we played them, Mauer should have been comfortably ahead there also. Yeah, Dozier being a finalist feels a little like Melanie Griffith getting a nomination for an Oscar. OK maybe that dates me and is a little extreme but still.- 35 replies

Debating at a little cross purposes here. I agree with you especially with paragraph 1, 3 and 4. Especially 3! In theory. Its math, which doesn't lie. But then you add in human nature. You can give a guy 30 mil up front and 5 mil a year for 6 years which is much better than 10 mil a year for 6 years but if the player is going great he is going to downplay the upfront money after a few years and say "I am worth way more than 5 mil a year" and his agent who explained the front loading concept 3 years ago and pocketed the huge commission up front is going to say "I agree. Lets go renegotiate for a 2 year extension that will pay you the 10 mil a year for the remainder of your contract and fair market value for the extra two years"

Potential superstar position player presumably has pretty good trade value. If I look at him as a risk of not reaching that potential in terms of giving a long term deal what kind of value could he get back in a trade? I just threw very good SP out there. If you say no way, then what would you say "hey that's reasonable" to? I like Sano but he had a good year and his OPS was just a little higher than Rosario and there were posts saying it would take Rosario, Gonsalves and Gordon to get Archer alone. What is the equivalent of Sano? I like your algebra.

"The player thing is just stupid. That's what agents are for, to explain what it's stupid. I'm not saying you're wrong about the players' attitudes regarding pay, I'm just saying it's really stupid (and you know why it's stupid)." Not quite getting this especially since you said he might not be wrong. It might be stupid but its also real. Agents can explain all they want in the 3rd year of a 6 year contract that the player already received a bunch of money up front but that will be considered ancient history to the player and more likely, from what I know of agents, they would be backing the player on a renegotiation with a one or two year extension. This of course negates the value of the up front money. I do like the idea of front loading because as Mikesixel said I don't think the Twins are looking at the money they have spent under the 52% the last 6 years as money they can now spend in addition to 52% of current revenue. Front loading is a great theory I am just guessing there is more reason for not doing it than time value of money.

Mostly on board with this but there are options. Back when Sano was the #2 prospect I threw out the idea of trading him for Lindor or Correia who were also top 10 at the time but below Sano. Now I wonder what kind of package we can get for him in a trade. On another thread people were talking about the high price tag of Chris Archer. Would Sano do it alone or more? Would a guy like Archer plus maybe a reliever be worth the 100+ drop in OPS between Sano and Escobar?

If you look at their pitching staff and their individual and collective stats and the fact that they were outscored by 20 runs during the regular season. You see that Viola and Berenguer were the only two pitchers with ERAs below 4, their team ERA of 4.63 was 11th in the AL and the offense actually scored below the league average it will be hard to come up with a worse WS winner. However, do you know what they call the worst team to win a World Series? Answer. World Series Champion

Curtiss? Busenitz? Would like to see Kintzler back but not for 3 years and preferably not for 2. Pay him big for one year. He's earned it for us at least.- 56 replies

Article: The Brian Dozier Trade That Almost Was
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"We'll probably never know what the best package Levine turned down was. But there were rumblings that the Twins were pushing for the likes of Cody Bellinger and Walker Buehler. If so, it demonstrates astute evaluative chops from the GM and his staff." I don't think we can make any definitive statements here. For all we know the Twins were offered DeLeon, Bellinger and Buehler and were holding out for one more lottery pick. Last year at this time Bellinger was just a prospect. BTW, maybe now is the time to go after DeLeon. -

Subtractive value....I get it but boy that's a tough one. If Sano had not gotten hurt he probably gets MVP and you would be talking about subtractive value. If fact Sano did get hurt and Escobar from that point hit nearly as well as he did and if Sano doesn't get hurt maybe Polanco and Escobar don't get on a roll and maybe Sano slumps and the whole thing ends up that Sano getting hurt had large additive value.- 30 replies

Article: Supplementing the Twins: Lance Lynn
Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
3.58 ERA in 138 innings against AL. Complete game shutout in only appearance against Yankees. I would be ok with it. -
Back then I was on the Trib pages a lot. I remember making the case that Mauer should give a discount to the Twins and got ripped by fans wanting the twins to extend his contract. My position was what difference does a few million make when we are talking 20 some million a year and the response was wouldn't I go elsewhere to make more money (like its the same thing for me). Anyway this was when 99% of posters wanted Mauer signed no matter the cost (as opposed to 2011 when 99% of the posters said they were always against the deal). About this time Perkins was filing his grievance. I never liked the guy (Perkins) all that much but couldn't help notice the fans defending Mauer's right to make as much as he could while ripping on Perkins for trying to milk as much money as he could out of what looked like a mediocre career that was pointing toward wash up. Just didn't make sense to me. I came to admire Perkins not for his pitching so much but more for just appearing to be a stand up guy.

Article: Twins Daily Awards 2017: Most Improved
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
While trying to look this up I went to this site Its the official site of the Minnesota Twins. Kind of myopic on my part. I saw it listed Mauer with 2 batting titles so was focusing on the fact that he won three. Then it dawned on me that Oliva and Carew and I think Puckett had titles also. Am I missing something there? -
Article: Twins Daily Awards 2017: Most Improved
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kind of begs the question. I think there are official awards for this voted on sportswriters. Has there ever been an award winner for the league that was different than the same award winner for the team. For example if Buxton wins Twins comeback player and Mauer wins American League comeback player. -
I just wanted a recap on this site and something that would let us know when the next game or two (turned out to be 3) was going to be and who was pitching without having to go to MLB and sift through their stuff. I wanted to be able to discuss the game on a post dedicated to it without having to sift through all the pages of the game day thread. You really filled a major void on this site Tom. Thank you. Don't know how we got along without it. Sad to have to go 6 months before seeing it again.

Article: NYY 8, MIN 4: It’s Over
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I referred to this in my earlier comment so thank you for fleshing it out. I think Castro was set up outside so having to move his glove that much probably didn't help. I'm not blaming the umpires but just saying games turn on little things like this. He strikes out and maybe the whole game goes differently. Back to not winning this game is not the same as being unable to win this game.- 54 replies

Article: NYY 8, MIN 4: It’s Over
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
4 runs in two innings didn't help. Walk to the first guy annoyed me the most. No hate here. Erv did help get the Twins this far but he didn't pitch well last night. So what? Different night, maybe he throws a shutout. Just one of those things. Morris is known around here as a great clutch playoff pitcher but he threw several duds as well. Thats all this was. Nothing more, nothing less.- 54 replies

Article: NYY 8, MIN 4: It’s Over
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I laughed a little at that one. Not only do the Twins need to hit the 98mph mistakes, in the clutch they need to hit the 98mph fastball on the corner and the really nasty curve balls 2 inches off the plate. Kershaw better hope you never coach the opposing team. cuz you will tell your players to just hit the pitcher's pitches and they will run him out of there. Sorry about the snark. Yankees are good, had home field advantage and won because Santana and Berrios did not execute pitches, not because they are unable to execute pitches. Robertson did execute, to his credit. Twins not winning is not the same as unable to win. Santana, Berrios and Severino threw as hard as they ever have (all were hitting 97 and above) which is probably the problem. Too amped up? Too rested? Who knows. Berrios went back to overthrowing breaking balls and Santana was probably throwing his slider too hard as well. Best pitchers last night were the ones with the nasty breaking balls, not the high heat. Gregorius could have been called out a pitch earlier and instead hits a 3 run homer. Mauer misses a grand slam by about 5 feet. That is the margin of the game. Its baseball. Could have gone our way. Didn't.- 54 replies

I don't think I have a big problem with this except I would like to still see the umpire go through the motions. I know there has been discussion on this but it seems like the width of the strike zone would be easily accounted for but the height would vary for each batter. Or would it?

Honestly, I don't have a ton of confidence that Sano should be back. I have more confidence in Grossman giving us good at bats than Sano and if he is not ready he would be like an anchor in the middle of a lineup that has been going pretty good. I do like your idea having him face a lot of live quality pitching. I don't start him in New York but who knows? I have been wrong before.

These things don't happen in a vacuum though so you never know. Escobar had a .902 OPS the last month which is better than Sano's year to date. Sano stays healthy and Escobar probably doesn't get the same playing time. Maybe he splits time with Polanco and neither one of them get on a roll and I know Sano being good isn't going to make up for two decent players being hot. Side note, Sano had an awesome first month. His numbers since then don't come close to matching Doziers last couple months so IMO he is not the most dangerous hitter. In fact, Buxton and maybe others can lay claim to more dangerous the last several months. This is a good thing. None of this is to take away from Sano but without any meaningful proof that he is as good as he was when he got hurt what with the injury and the lack of timing from being off so long I'm not sure he is more dangerous that almost any one right now. If he plays I sure hope I am wrong but I am not just going to assume it. BTW, on a some what unrelated side note, if everything else played out the same way the Twins only needed to finish 81-81 to get the 2nd wild card. Who'd a thunk?

Article: A Blueprint For The Bronx
Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That's a great blueprint. My prediction is that Dozier leads off the first with a single, Mauer walks, Polanco sacrifices them over, Rosario hits a sac fly and we win 1-0.
