  1. Since Herrmann will be probably be playing some outfield, the Twins will no doubt be carrying a third catcher. Dear God, don't let it be Fryer. Maybe Doumit will still play catcher, though. I have a feeling they'll play it smart with him, too.
  2. Yeah, I love the move. His health is too important from a personal standpoint, and to the team. His bat plays anywhere.
  3. Yep, a platoon with him and Plouffe at 1B could be really good. I'm assuming he could handle 1B.
  4. Beltre plays a premium defensive position at an elite level, while McGriff was a 1B. That really separates those two, in my opinion.
  5. Never even gave it a thought, but I would say he definitely has a case. Especially if he has 3 or 4 good seasons left in him. Of course, like Jeff Bagwell, he'll be penalized for possibly taking steroids. Unlike Bagwell, it seems pretty likely Beltre did. And I still don't care. Too bad the HoF voters are obsessed with it.
  6. I was against the idea of signing him at first, because of the draft pick and the very good chance he regresses. But Jesus...they have to take a chance at some point. There aren't a lot of good options out there.
  7. This is what I would expect. I'd almost be concerned if he wanted a 4 year deal, because he might think he's peaked. That's probably overanalyzing, though. The Twins should overpay him for 2 years and hope for the best.
  8. It's worth nothing that Adam Dunn was a very good player before he signed with the White Sox. They could not have possible predicted he would fall off a cliff when he signed with them. Also, 25 at-bats is irrelevant. The quality of Cuban pitching is a valid argument, though.
  9. I wish there were better options out there, but Hughes is really one of the best targets this year. Love the way Leviathan put it; you'd be giving him a better chance to succeed. I looked at his average fastball velocity while he's been in the majors, no decline there. So he probably hasn't lost his "stuff". Just needs to figure something out, I suppose. Fangraphs Pitch F/X
  10. Kind of wish they would have hired someone from outside the organization, preferably someone originally from Latin America. Still, I like Molitor. Based off his reputation, I hope he can correct some fundamentals. If the Twins are going to bunt, (I don't like the bunt), at least do it right.
  11. Yeah...I would not doubt it.
  12. I think just about any HoF player should have his number retired, especially on a team without a lot of those. I couldn't imagine Bert's number not being retired. And the other Twins numbers retired are pretty reasonable. Maybe not Hrbek, but the hometown thing is special. Going back to Radke, he probably shouldn't have his number retired. I just think people should appreciate how good he was. I probably overstated it earlier, but he was so solid. And he pitched a lot in a offense heavy era.
  13. Wow..I'm not sure if his number should be retired, but Radke was a great pitcher. My mind is blown that he's being dismissed as "not special" or "epitome of a Twins pitcher".
  14. Once again, 11 million a year is not a burden on the payroll. Period.
  15. That is not a lot of money anymore, as we'll soon see. Contracts are going to look outrageous with all the TV money coming in. If he hits like Ryan Howard when he was good, the contract won't look bad at all. AROG, the Twins have enough money to spend on a big bat and pitching. Their payroll is ridiculously low right now.
  16. Frustrating that he's going within the division, and the Twins weren't interested. I sure hope they make me look like an idiot, but they should have gone after the guy. 6 years, 68 million is not unreasonable, and wouldn't have crippled the payroll if he failed.
  17. I don't think a guy coming from Cuba is going to care about anything except how much money he's going to get. I think the Astros will sign him if they really want him.
  18. I don't know why they couldn't slot him in as a DH. The guy has a David Ortiz-like ceiling. No one's ever complained about him being a DH only. I knew it was going to happen, realistically, but I desperately hoped the Twins would go after Abreu. Maybe I'm buying into the hype too much, but I think he'll be a great hitter.
  19. This. It's freakin torture to watch the guy lick his hands and take 20+ seconds between each pitch. It's almost guaranteed he'll be back after hearing Terry Ryan talk about him with Phil Mackey. He loves it in Minnesota, the Twins overvalue him, and they have plenty of money to spend. Sigh.
  20. This, substituting someone like Nolasco for Pelfrey, would make me happy. Nothing the Twins do is going to make starting pitching a positive next year, but that would make a respectable rotation. All I ask is for a halfway competitive team next year. Something better than the dumpster fire of the last three seasons.
  21. I would like to read a long term review of payroll and how it correlates with playoff success, but I don't doubt what Rand is saying is true.
  22. I would trade Doumit for a bag of balls, and that's about all you could expect for him. Willingham can have more value during the season. At least, he's not going to lose value.
  23. This will not stand, ya know, this aggression will not stand, man.
  24. I think it's surprising because the Twins weren't fooled by his decent ERA throughout the year. That's a good thing. I'm not surprised because he's a good pitcher; he's not.
  25. Even my poor self could pony up $5 for this. Thanks for the work you guys do, love the site.
